1983 Volkswagen Vanagon Gl Standard Passenger Van 3-door 1.9l on 2040-cars
Clovis, California, United States
I recently got this Vanagon from the original owners (buyer will be legal second owner).
It had been sitting for a few years, and fuel lines had dried up and cracked. I replaced fuel filter and small portion of lines, slapped a new battery in, and it fired up! But...it doesnt want to stay running. I also replaced cap, rotor, all plugs, and cleaned the throttle body. Now it doesnt want to start again either...it cranks, but seems to not be getting fuel it needs to fire. Im pretty sure the injectors need a good cleaning and it needs timing, and it should be purring in no time. This is a watercooled engine, not aircooled. The original owners gave me some receipts, but not an extensive amount. They did have the engine replaced, and this one has around 60,000 miles from their recollection. I put a set of ok tires on the original 14" steelies, and all 4 original hubcaps are stored inside the bus. The interior definitely shows its age, but would surely be usable with a good cleaning. It is actually cleaning up nicely, but some wear to the seats and carpet. I put basic seat covers on the front seats for now. Dash is really nice. Couple knobs missing, etc, but minor things. I havent opened sunroof (oh yeah, its a sunroof model!) because the handle seems brittle. Owners said it was operational. Paint on the outside of the sunroof is actually covered in surface rust (this must be common for these). 98% original paint that is polishing out pretty well. Rear passenger quarter panel had a small repair with repaint, thats it. I am not really making money on this, i just need to get some of my money back to pay for engine work on my other car. No back fees due to DMV, but does need smog and transfer before sticker issued. I have the signed original pinkslip from original owners and dmv papers stating all fees paid recently. Buyer will be 2nd registered owner. If not sold in this auction, its going in the shop for tune-up and smog...then price will go up substantially. At close of auction, paypal deposit required. Payment in full within 7days. Seller will store vehicle for 7days at no charge. After 7days from auction closing, storage fees of $50 per day will be due at time of pickup. *As stated above: vehicle will not stay running and will need to be towed.* Location is in Clovis, CA 93612. |

1000-hp Mk1 VW Golf is terrifyingly cool
Tue, 04 Jun 2013There are plenty of things to love about the Mk1 Volkswgen Golf. The machine's horsepower isn't one of them. From the factory, the little hatch cranked a breathy 112 horsepower from the most robust form of its 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Boba motoring, however, has taken that figure and multiplied it by a factor of nearly 10. If 1,000 horsepower sounds terrifying in a machine with a wheelbase of just 94.5 inches, it should. A massive Garrett GTX4202R turbo force-feeds the little mill through a tweaked 16-valve KR head. The crew calls the beast the 16Vampir, and we think that's fitting.
Of course, we'd wager you quit reading right about the time you set your eyes on that headline. Those of you who've stuck around this long can point yourselves below to see the maniacal creation in action. You won't be disappointed.
Recharge Wrap-up: Smart Ready for Rent, MOIA comes to US in 2018
Mon, Dec 12 2016Daimler is launching its "Smart Ready to Rent" service in Europe. Beginning this month in German and French cities, the rental scheme bridges the gap between short-term Car2go rentals and longer leases. Customers book the Smart model of their choice – including the emissions-free Electric Drive and the hotter Brabus versions – for a period of one day up to three months. As such, Smart Ready to Rent is useful to those who live outside of an urban center. Users can book a car online or through a dealer, and vehicles are collected and returned at the dealership. Read more at Green Car Congress. Volkswagen will launch its MOIA mobility arm in the US in 2018. The recently announced brand will take on public transportation as a competitor with services such as ride hailing and car sharing. VW is looking into forging partnerships with the likes of technology and ride sharing companies. The automaker also expects to show an electric shuttle-type concept in 2017 for pooling services, but will use the three-row VW Atlas crossover in the meantime until that concept reaches production. Look to see MOIA emerging in major cities along the US coasts. Read more at Automotive News. A new report from Lux Research suggests that most EV batteries are better off being recycled than reused. Once lithium-ion batteries have outlived their usefulness for automotive duty, some automakers (BMW, Nissan, and Toyota included) are looking at ways to use their remaining capacity, such as for stationary energy storage. The new report, though, says that reusing batteries offers "questionable returns on account of reduced performance." Better to be like Tesla, and just recycle them. Read more at Hybrid Cars.
