For sale is our beloved SunnyClara.    It is with a lot of regret that she is going to a new home, but we just don't drive her around everywhere like we used to do, and she deserves better.  We've been the owner since 1997.  I have done all of the work personally and I drove nearly all of th 60k miles since we've owned her.  You can call me at 269-365-4982 to discuss.  Clara is great for a daily diver but awsome for a full restoration since everything is there and not lost to a junkyard.  I urge you to see the 5 minute picture montage at

MECHANICAL
Engine rebuilt about 60K ago.  Has all the original fuel injection (don't ever replace it!) plus a stash of expensive used fuel injection parts, see the youtube.  No leaks, or at least very very minimal.  All stock, except I replaced the points with pertronix.  I also added a multiple spark discharge for better fuel economy.  It could easily be made stock again, but really why?  The cold start thermo-sensor failed one day and I replaced with a push button switch on the dash.  It was a quick repair that worked so well I just left it.  Exhaust is solid although the heater boxes are trashy.  Brakes fine.  The vacuum boost to the front discs works perfectly.  Clutch/transmission all solid.  All lights, wipers work fine.  Gas gauge broken, though; it needs the unit behind the speedometer replaced.  Tires fair/poor.  Suspension all solid, front and rear.  Steers fine. One of the ball joint bootseal was torn, and my standard practice is keep it wrapped in plastic and full of grease and it will last forever.   Before me someone added a "cruise" control, but really it is RPM control.  Works fine on long straightaways like out west, but a little fast then slow then fast on the hills.

EXTERIOR
I painted in 1998.  Original color is that dull beige.
The new color is "Saturn Gelb" from 1975 VW color charts.  At that time I welded a small corner beneath the left rear light.  You can see in the montage there is rust through just ahead of the rear tires but the car is not rotten.  All of the windows/doors work perfectly, and the doors lock with the key.  There is a trailer hitch too.

INTERIOR
Front seats are tired and from a Vanagon.  I have the original seats to be rebuilt.  Radio is junk.  Notice the very custom leather half wrap on the steering wheel to lean on during loooong drives.  Has a nice lighted tachometer that I added where you otherwise might find a clock on some models.  That middle seat can be removed, or turned to face front/rear.  The shallow cupboard stores lots of stuff of course.  The canvas top is not perfect but no rips or anything, more like road wear and tear.  The carpet is not original.  The rear seat is.   Some special stuff like a custom drink holder and front footrest/junk tray just make it more enjoyable to drive. Also the youtube shows the awning I added, makes camping on rainy days so much easier.  IMO Awnings are more convenient for a little campfire than is a tent.

ORIGINAL INTERIOR
The original interior can be re-installed with just a few screws and bolts, but then... that custom middle seat barely fits.  The fridge I never loved, kids would just leave it on and kill the spare battery.  I must say the stove and sink were really handy, especially if traveling just two or three.  I miss them.  For me it was a toss-up between kid seating vs. a sink......kids won.  From the montage on youtube you can see I have lots of OE items like the storage/step, the trampoline, all the window screens, curtains, front and rear table etc.

Thanks for looking.  I'm guessing we might not be able to get all of the extra stuff inside the bus if you drive it away, so bring an extra vehicle like a minivan, or SUV.  No warranty implied, as is where is.

Volkswagen Golf Variant will make a lovely Jetta SportWagen

Tue, 05 Mar 2013

In addition to several other versions of the Golf, Volkswagen is debuting the new Golf Variant (read: wagon) here at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. And if this bigger version of the Golf looks like it might fit right at home in the States, it's because we could possibly see some version of this car as the next-generation Jetta SportWagen here on our shores.
Volkswagen is debuting the Golf Variant with two efficient diesel engines, rated at 110 and 150 horsepower, the smaller of which is good for an impressive 71.3 miles per gallon on the European cycle (when mated to a six-speed manual transmission). The Golf Variant also gets a version of Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, making it incredibly all-weather capable.
It's a handsome estate, and it wears the new Golf's design language well. We can't say for sure if this car will actually make its way Stateside, but given the fact that the current Jetta SportWagen still rides on the old Golf platform, the odds look to be in our favor.

Vahland leaving VW over dispute on how to run NA region

Wed, Oct 14 2015

On November 1, Winfried Vahland was supposed to take over Volkswagen Group's recently created North American region that combines Canada, the US, and Mexico. But the longtime exec has instead decided to leave the automaker after a dispute over how to manage the new combined region. Vahland is currently the boss at Skoda, and in a statement about his departure the Czech company said: "Differing views on the organization of the new Group region have led to this decision; this decision is expressly not related to current events on the issue of diesel engines." Vahland is leaving at his own request, the announcement says. Vahland was appointed to run to North American region during VW's massive corporate shakeup on September 25. The decision was part of the automaker's plan to put a greater emphasis on regions and brands, rather than on centralized authority. According to Automotive News Europe citing a report from Germany's Auto Bild, Vahland was passed over for the CEO job, with Matthias Muller taking that position. Amidst the changes, Michael Horn remained at the helm of Volkswagen Group of America, reporting to the new regional boss. Vahland joined the automaker in 1990 and started running VW's operations in China in 2005. He became boss at Skoda in 2010. "In the last 25 years, Prof. Vahland made a great contribution to the company. We respect his decision and thank him for his exceptional performance," Muller said in the departure announcement. Prof. Dr. Winfried Vahland leaves Volkswagen Group 14.10.2015 Prof. Dr. Winfried Vahland leaves Volkswagen Group Mlada Boleslav, 14 October 2015 – After 25 years of successful work in Volkswagen Group, most recently as Chairman of SKODA, Prof. Dr. Winfried Vahland is leaving the company at his own request. Prof. Vahland will therefore not be taking up the position of overall responsibility for the North American Region (NAR). Differing views on the organisation of the new Group region have led to this decision; this decision is expressly not related to current events on the issue of diesel engines. Prof. Vahland began his work in Volkswagen Group in 1990. After holding several key positions at home and abroad, he took over Group responsibility as President and CEO of Volkswagen in China in 2005 and contributed significantly to the successful new direction of Volkswagen in China. He was appointed Chairman of the Board of Management of SKODA in 2010.

TRANSLOGIC 150: Volkswagen XL1

Mon, Feb 24 2014

How do you build the world's most fuel-efficient production car? Start with the world's most aerodynamic design. The Volkswagen XL1 is capable of 261 miles per gallon thanks to its sleek shape and ultra efficient plug-in diesel hybrid powertrain. The downside is that only 250 will be made and none will be sold stateside. That didn't stop us from taking our turn behind the wheel of this truly revolutionary ride.
