1978 Volkswagen Westfalia Hardtop Camper Bus No Reserve on 2040-cars
Manteno, Illinois, United States
Up for auction 1978 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper Bus NO RESERVE. I bought this 3 years ago and used it for 2 years. it has been in indoor storage for thelast year due to me buying another Bus to replace this one. So I no longer need this Bus and would like to sell it to a restore for restoration if possible. This Bus would be great for restoration as it is all solid underneath with minor surface rust in some areas. No gaping rust holes anywhere although the floor of the front cab is rusted due to water damage and could be replaced or patched up. This Bus was located in Colorado for most of its life. Colorado doesn't use road salt so the Bus doesn't have Midwest Rust Belt rot due to years and years of salt exposure. While I've had this Bus in Illinois for the past 3 years it wasn't driven much during the 2 winters and has been in indoor indoor storage the entire past winter.
Some of the work I've done to it. Replace both front brake calipers and all brake pads. ( Done a few years ago, brakes are great ) Replaced both rear wheel cylinders and all brake shoes. ( Done a few years ago, brakes are great ) Replace thermostat and thermostat cable. ( Done about a year ago ) Modify exhaust to a fully welded one piece system with J pipes and no heat exchangers with goo quiet pack extractor muffler. ( Done about a year ago ) Replaced all CV joints and boots. ( Done a few years ago ) Replaced front tires Good year 195R14. ( Done about a year ago ) Transfered rear tires Michelin Ajillis 185R14C. ( Done when vehicle purchased ) Replaced steering damper on front suspension. ( done a few years ago ) Replaced clutch pressure plate, clutch disc, clutch release bearing, main pilot shaft needle bearings, clutch cable, clutch cable flexible tube, rear main oil seal. ( Done a few weeks ago ) Replaced valve cover gaskets. ( Done a few weeks ago ) Replaced air filter. ( Done a few weeks ago ) I use high quality German parts when I can or high quality parts and no aftermarket junk parts. What work it should need: The engine leaks a little oil, the pushrod tubes and seals need replacing. The oil drain plug and/or drain plug hole needs replacing or rethreading. I bought it like this, the drain plug won't tighten down with a wrench but doesn't fall out. Bear in mind this is a thirty+ year old VW, it needs TLC interior and exterior to bring it back to quality condition. The camper interior is in good shape except the laminate on the cabinets is peeling and cracked off in some areas. The Z-Bed is working and the fabric/foam cushions are in good condition with no worn through spots. The sink faucet is working pumping water fine. There is a mosquito net but no childs' cot. The jalousie windows are good and working with opening knobs and screens. The curtains are complete including the front cab privacy curtain. There is no passenger seat or seat swvel mechanism. I took the seat swivel mechanism out but I do have it, it was cut out with a torch. It could be reassembled and welded back in. I took the seat and swivel out to install a propane heater which I had used but is now removed. The original seats were no good and gotten rid of. The drivers' seat is from a VW Golf and is bolted to the floor and cannot be adjusted forwards or backwards. The seat back can be adjusted with the seat back pivot knob. I am tall and the stock VW seat tracks don't go far enough back to allow me to stretch my legs out not be cramped in the seat. I've had to do this with my previous Buses and cars, the seat doesn't go back far enough. The interior lights don't work. The electrical wiring has had some shoddy work done to it. An alarm was once installed and removed but the messy alarm wiring was not removed. The entire electrcal system should be gone over and repaired or replaced. I am still working on a few things like installing the foam engine seal as seen in the pictures. But the Bus does run and drive as is. Bear in mind this is a NO RESERVE auction, highest bidder wins it. I can answer any questions you may have. I have many pictures of just about everything. If you need to see something I can email you photos. This would be a great camper Bus for a newbie VW enthusiast with many things to do and tweak with. This Bus was my third Bus and second Westy Camper Bus. I want someone to appreciate this Bus and bring it back to high quality condition. I'm on my fourth Bus so I need to pass this one on. Thanks for looking happy ebaying. |

VW confirms Golf GTD diesel coming to US for 2016
Wed, 03 Jul 2013Part of the Volkswagen Golf recipe that has helped the car sell more than 30 million units in just under 40 years is the number of variants in which the hatchback is offered. Building on that range here in the US, Automotive News is reporting that we will finally be getting the sporty Golf GTD, likely as a 2016 model. It's the GTD, you'll recall, that crosses the performance abilities of the venerable GTI with a powerful and fuel-efficient diesel engine.
After speaking with Andreas Valbuena, Volkswagen product manager for the Golf, AN not only says that the GTD will for sale in the US in a couple years, it also estimates a baseline price of around $27,000, which would place it between the current pricing for the GTI and the Golf R. The GTD is launching in Europe this summer, but we won't be getting the seventh-generation Golf in the US for another year. The news about the performance diesel model isn't entirely unexpected - VW officials have been hinting at it for at least a year now, going so far as to import a sixth-generation model for media test drives on US soil, a task we happily took them up on last year.
The Mk VII GTD uses VW's 2.0-liter TDI engine with output increased to 184 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, allowing the car to sprint to 60 miles per hour in about seven seconds while returning more than 40 mpg in highway driving. We can't wait.
BMW, VW partner with ChargePoint for high-speed charging network
Thu, Jan 22 2015To promote their plug-in electric vehicles, a number of electric vehicle makers are working overtime to get a charging infrastructure set up. Tesla is famously setting up a network of Superchargers around the world, and today BMW and VW have announced they are partnering with ChargePoint to install almost 100 DC Fast Chargers up and down the US coasts. Installing additional Level 2 chargers is also part of the plan. The new DC Fast Chargers will offer the SAE Combo connectors, which is available on both the e-Golf and the i3. The fast chargers will have "up to two 50 kW DC Fast chargers, or 24 kW DC Combo Fast chargers," BMW says. They will be installed roughly 50 miles apart between Boston and Washington, DC in the east as well as Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego in the west. The 24-kW DC Fast Chargers will fill up an empty i3 or e-Golf to 80 percent in a half-hour or 3.5-4 hours from the Level 2 cords. Speaking at an announcement ceremony at the Washington Auto Show today, ChargePoint CEO Pasquale Romano said that infrastructure investments like this will get more people to realize that they can use an electric vehicle as their only car, and Jorg Sommer, VP of product marketing and strategy for VW North America, said that it's clear that, "The EV is perfect for the daily driver." BMW, Volkswagen and ChargePoint Join Forces to Create Electric Vehicle Express Charging Corridors on the East and West Coasts. · A goal of nearly 100 DC Fast charging ports will be installed to support long distance and metropolitan electric vehicle travel with the BMW i3, Volkswagen e-Golf and other electric cars, along heavily trafficked corridors on both coasts, supported by Level 2 chargers. · These publicly available charging stations will be added to the existing ChargePoint network and can be easily accessed using a ChargePoint® or ChargeNow card. Washington, D.C., January 22, 2015 – At the 2015 Washington Auto Show, two of the top automakers, BMW of North America and Volkswagen of America, together with ChargePoint, the largest electric vehicle charging network, announced an initiative to create express charging corridors along heavily-traveled routes on the East and West Coasts.
Consumer Reports no longer recommends Honda Civic
Mon, Oct 24 2016Consumer Reports annual Car Reliability Survey is out, and yes, there are some big surprises. First and foremost? The venerable publication no longer recommends the Honda Civic. In fact, aside from the walking-dead CR-Z and limited-release Clarity fuel-cell car, the Civic is the only Honda to miss out on CR's prestigious nod. At the opposite end there's a surprise as well – Toyota and Lexus remain the most reliable brands on the market, but Buick cracked the top three. That's up from seventh last year, and the first time for an American brand to stand on the Consumer Reports podium. Mazda's entire lineup earned Recommended checks as well. Consumer Reports dinged the Civic for its "infuriating" touch-screen radio, lack of driver lumbar adjustability, the limited selection of cars on dealer lots fitted with Honda's popular Sensing system, and the company's decision to offer LaneWatch instead of a full-tilt blind-spot monitoring system. Its score? A lowly 58. The Civic isn't the only surprise drop from CR's Recommended ranks. The Audi A3, Ford F-150, Subaru WRX/STI, and Volkswagen Jetta, GTI, and Passat all lost the Consumer Reports' checkmark. On the flipside, a number of popular vehicles graduated to the Recommended ranks, including the BMW X5, Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette, and Cruze, Hyundai Santa Fe, Porsche Macan, and Tesla Model S. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the hilariously recall-prone Ford Escape getting a Recommended check – considering the popularity of Ford's small crossover, this is likely a coup for the brand, as it puts the Escape on a level playing field with the Recommended Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Nissan Rogue. While Ford is probably happy to see CR promote the Escape, the list wasn't as kind for every brand. For example, of the entire Fiat Chrysler Automobiles catalog, the ancient Chrysler 300 was the only car to score a check – there wasn't a single Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati, or Ram on the list. That hurts. FCA isn't alone at the low end, either. GMC, Jaguar Land Rover, Mini, and Mitsubishi don't have a vehicle on CR's list between them, while brands like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Nissan, Lincoln, Infiniti, and Cadillac only have a few models each. You can check out Consumer Reports entire reliability roundup, even without a subscription, here.
