1973 Volkswagen Bus/vanagon, Transporter, Kombi, Bay Window, Type 2, Vw on 2040-cars
Union City, Tennessee, United States
You are bidding on a 1973 Volkswagen Type 2b Bus, also known as a Transporter, Kombi, Bay Window, or Late Bay Van. We purchased this van in 2009 as a project for my daughter, who wanted a “hippie van”. Now she’s about to graduate from college and it’s time to move on to the next project. When we bought it, it had “good bones” but needed some cosmetic help. Over the years we’ve cosmetically and mechanically “refreshed” the van. It’s been driven very little, but runs and drives great, even at highway speeds. It has low miles (68,000), and the body is straight. It also has the interior pieces in place for the rare A/C setup (not hooked up). Body/Cosmetics...We completely repainted the exterior and door jams. We gutted, sanded, and painted the interior floors and put down black and white check vinyl flooring in the middle/back and new carpet up front. We built a custom L-shaped lounge in the back, complete with new seat belts (also have original back bench if you want it). We reupholstered the front seats to match the back lounger and installed new seat belts, door panels, kick panels, and sun visors. We installed a nice Kenwood stereo with new speakers in the doors and under the back lounger. We replaced the front windshield (old one was cracked) and all the rubbers around the windows and doors. Mechanical...The engine (original, as far as I know) has always run well and has needed no work (but does leak a little oil). We have put in a new shifter and replaced the shift tubes and linkages to make it shift better. It has a new alternator. As you may know, factory installed gas tanks were made in such a way that they rust over time and clog the fuel system. We had our fuel tank removed and sent off to be completely cleaned and dipped (galvanized) to permanently eliminate that problem. We also installed a new fuel sending unit while the tank was out. It has new tires (<500 miles) and new exhaust/muffler. Good luck, and please, serious bidders only (someone who can pay for the car, as directed, if you are the winning bidder). Please, no scammers! |

Europeans get first crack at new Golf Variant wagon
Mon, 04 Mar 2013Just last week, when we brought you news of a new Volkswagen Golf variant out and testing in Europe, we had no idea we were being so literal with out description. For it seems that VW has every intention of calling its new Golf wagon, making its Geneva debut, the "Golf Variant."
Odd/interesting sobriquets taken as read then, there's a lot to like about this new small wagon from VW. The Variant will shed some 232 pounds in this generation, and will come to market with two efficient TDI engines. Volkswagen isn't giving us displacement figures for either yet, but we're told the diesels will come with outputs of 110 and 150 horsepower. The 110-hp TDI BlueMotion Varient will be good for a whopping 71.3 miles per gallon on the European cycle, when mated to the six-speed manual transmission.
The German automaker has brought along an all-wheel-drive 4Motion version of the Gold Variant to bow in Geneva, as well, and a natural gas-burning TGI BlueMotion is said to be "in the pipeline."
Skoda racing Up! to Worthersee with Citigo Rally concept
Thu, 17 May 2012If you thought the Volkswagen Group was about to wind down the endless stream of concept cars based on the new Up! city car, think again. Because not only is the Volkswagen brand itself keeping the train a-moving, so are its sister brands.
Skoda has its own version of the Up called the Citigo. But what racing fans know the Czech subsidiary for best is its rally program that has become a dominant force in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge and the basis for VW's own foray into the World Rally Championship. Now Skoda is bringing the two together with an exciting concept car previewed by the rendering above and confirmed in the press release below.
Following in the footsteps of the tantalizing Fabia roadster unveiled last year, the Citigo Rally concept is to be the centerpiece of the Skoda display at the Volkswagen Group's annual hot-hatch gathering at Lake Wörthersee in Austria. Details are scarce, but the show car will feature rally-inspired bodywork complete with 18-inch white alloys packed into aggressively flared wheel arches, a substantial rear wing and vents aplenty.
VW admits 430,000 2016 models have implausible CO2 ratings
Mon, Nov 16 2015Volkswagen finally explained more details about its CO2 rating scandal in Europe and admitted that 430,046 of the estimated 800,000 affected vehicles with "implausible" figures came from the 2016 model year. They included some from Audi, Seat, Skoda, VW, and VW Commercial Vehicles, according to the automaker's list (as a PDF). The problem mostly impacts diesel engines, but the inventory also shows some gasoline mills. VW will next determine the accurate CO2 emissions for these vehicles, and the German Federal Vehicle and Transport Authority will supervise that process to ensure the data's veracity. The automaker will also launch websites in Europe to let owners enter their model's VIN to check whether it's affected. Because governments there often link vehicle taxes and CO2 production, the company promises to work with regulators in each country to cover any fees that result from the inaccurate figures. VW announced the CO2 scandal earlier in November and estimated the equivalent of $2.2 billion to fix it at the time. A later report claimed that a group of engineers were responsible for fabricating the emissions data. They allegedly couldn't meet reduction goals from Martin Winterkorn, and between 2013 and this spring the workers did things like overinflate the tires during testing to achieve the desired results. VW is also closer to a fix in the diesel emissions scandal. According to an anonymous insider to Bloomberg, the company has a repair for the 1.6-liter engine that's reportedly neither very complex nor expensive. German regulators would still need to approve the solution before it could roll out to owners. Next step in clarifying the CO2 issue Affected Volkswagen Group models of the current model year have been identified Customers being informed via website Discussions with the authorities have begun The Volkswagen Group reports that the vehicles of the 2016 model year affected by the CO2 issue have been identified. There is thus now clarity about the new vehicles of the current model year out in the marketplace. On 3 November 2015, the Group had already reported that irregularities may have arisen in determining the CO2 figures for type approval of around 800,000 vehicles. This was identified during its own currently ongoing investigations and had been made public. The internal investigations into the current vehicles of the 2016 model year provide results for narrowing down the actually affected vehicles with implausible CO2 figures.
