If you have been looking for a solid, 99% rust free Bus, this is the one. No, it's not perfect, few of them are. But if you want a daily driver or want to hop in and drive 1,000 miles on a trip, no problem. This is a 1966 "Walk through" with 11 windows. The original paint was Dove Blue but someone painted it Mouse Gray with white on top. Almost no rust. One rust area exists behind drivers door and the nose was backed into before I bought.  Both should an easy repair. I have owned the Bus since July 2012 and have done or had a lot of work done to it. The following is a list of maintenance actions or upgrades since July 2012.

Brakes - Wheel cylinders replaced as necessary, bearings greased, new brake shoes all 4 wheels.
Steering- Idler arm and connecting rods replaced. Wheels aligned.
Tires - New Hankook RA-8 tires installed last summer. Less than 4000 miles use.
Heating system - Main tubing under bus replaced and insulated. New bell cranks and heater cable.
Wing windows replaced with new ones.
Antenna installed in factory correct position on front right.
Interior completely insulated with plywood floor installed in main area of bus. "Rock n roll" style bed/bench installed with custom cushions and pillows for bench and in rear. Folds down for a bed appr 71" x 46 with storage under bench.
Digital gauges installed in overhead console - Oil pressure, oil temp, & volt meter. Digital tach installed in dashboard.
Clutch adjusted.
Shift linkage adjusted and shimmed but still has some slop. All gears shift easily.
Electronic ignition installed.
Plugs, wires, distributor cap replaced.
Deep cycle battery installed with 1000 watt inverter. The inverter will run a small fridge for 15 hrs on the deep cycle battery. Both batteries will charge from alternator, primary battery will NOT discharge if deep cycle drains down.
Alternator replaced 9 /12
Starter replaced 8/13
Original oil bath air cleaner installed.
New sun visors installed.
Hub cap clips replaced on wheels.
New fan belt 8/13.
Seat belts with shoulder harness installed.

Mileage is unknown since non standard height tires were installed at one time.
While on a vacation to Las Vegas last fall I went to the Auto Museum at The Quad and lucked in to purchasing an awning for the Bus from them. I do not have poles but was told by the Curator I spoke with that the awning is a reproduction made from an original. I have not opened the awning to look at it but it will come with the purchase. I also have an unused headliner, and also a full cover for the Bus for storage.

This is a great Bus that gets 18-21 mpg. We have had it from Boise to N Montana to camp the last two summers, and over to the coast at Seattle last summer also. I also made several trips commuting to work in Nevada from Boise with it. If you are looking for a 99% RUST FREE Bus, this is it.

VW readying CC Shooting Brake?

Mon, 11 Feb 2013

This was bound to happen. Volkswagen's relentless drive for big volume has the brand mining seemingly every niche it can find for additional sales worldwide. And with its CLS Shooting Brake, fellow countryman Mercedes-Benz has already shown that a wagon based off of a "four-door coupe" can look dead sexy and command extra dollars. So it follows that the Volkswagen CC (whose existence is all but directly attributable to the success of the original CLS sedan) will also get a load-lugging variant. That's according to the UK's Autocar, which notes that the five-door will come in the CC's next generation.
According to the report, the next CC will be available in front and all-wheel drive variants with the usual assortment of gas and diesel four-cylinders found in the Wolfsburg empire, with the possibility of a gas plug-in hybrid model, too. The rakish estate will ride atop VW's MQB architecture, a shorter variant of which is also found underneath the new Golf. The scalable chassis is set to spread like kudzu throughout the company's lineup, but the CC probably won't happen until after the launch of the next European-market Passat in 2015.
Will we get it in North America? Hard to say. Volkswagen sells the standard CC saloon here, but not in particularly large numbers, and when the company moved to a North American-specific Passat, it dumped the wagon variant. The traditional VW estate apparently continues to pick up sales momentum abroad, however, making the CC Shooting Brake a seemingly natural fit for buyers who still want the utility of a two-box form but can afford to sacrifice a bit of cargo room in the name of style.

VW Beetle R is one mean bug

Wed, 02 Oct 2013

Volkswagen's R lineup currently consists of the Golf R in North America, and the too-cool-for-school Scirocco R in Europe. It hasn't exactly been a secret as to which VW would next get the R treatment; the German manufacturer reportedly confirmed that a hotter Beetle would be coming to the US. That announcement, in August 2011, was followed up by a production-ready Beetle R Concept at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.
After some wait, we're finally seeing spy shots of the Beetle R in Germany. The mule shown in the images here is wearing the R-Line bodykit, which adds sportier front and rear fascias, side skirts, dual exhausts and a not-so-subtle spoiler. Topped off with Volkswagen's traditional, five-spoke R wheels, we'd be just fine with the Beetle R coming to market as is.
Our spy photographer, though, seems to think that the production R will get even sportier sheetmetal, which we take to mean the more assertive look shown on the Frankfurt show car. Larger intakes on the front fascia, a bigger rear spoiler and vertical vents on the rear bumper could all be upcoming. Whether a production model will include the concept's polished wheels (R cars haven't traditionally embraced that look), vented hood and the quad-tipped exhausts remains to be seen.
