Here is the Herbie that anyone can drive---with a Type 3 fully automatic transmission. Purchased from Scudder’s Performance in Sparks, Nevada in spring 2005 and shipped to the Garage (die Werkstatt) in Mount Holly, New Jersey for a full, body-off restoration.

Details:

• Fully restored VW Beetle 1963 Model 117 Deluxe Sunroof Sedan, ragtop (this is the exact model used for Herbie)
• birth certificate has been obtained from from Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen in Wolfsburg
• Pearlweiss (Pearl White), original 1963 VW color (code L87); extra bottle of paint for touch-up available
• 12 volt electrical system
• 14" widened to 16" racing tires (similar to those used in Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo and Herbie Goes Bananas)
• Original 1963 speedometer
• Gilmore Enterprises air conditioning
• Spare tire/kit in trunk
• new Kenwood radio/CD/MP3 player, front speakers
• Scat high-back velour seats; seat covers also included
• Custom-built chassis to support brand new Type 3 automatic transmission
• Dual carbs, dual port heads, new 1776cc engine
• Black Textured Under Dash Unit
• new wiring harness, all electrical components work
• warning beep alert if headlights are left on
• new back up lights
• wheel rim tone Pearl White
• L87 pearl white
• New rear pop-out windows
• Full dash board, with odometer, oil temp, fuel gauge
• Title available

Note about transmission: automatic transmission was recently replaced with brand new rebuild kit; needs some work (car not drivable at present). Will not take much to get this operating properly. Odometer reads 19,614, most of that coming from test driving by the Garage in Mount Holly, New Jersey, as I received the car completed from them with nearly 12,000 of those miles and a new engine. Any transmission-related questions should be directed to them (609.387.3031)

Also included:
- front seat covers
- car cover
- new front window frame (uninstalled)
- several unused "53" gumballs
- original 1962 VW Owner’s Handbook published by Floyd Clymer.

Constant head turner. Need to sell now. Have many more photos, including resto work and many receipts for both resto work and maintenance . Car brought me great joy, was a dream come true. Just needs a good home (and somebody that knows a thing or two about Type 3s). It is a one of a kind. Feel free to email or call with any questions.

Asking price is well below the $ invested. Only serious bidders please.

Everybody's doing flying cars, so why aren't we soaring over traffic already?

Mon, Oct 1 2018

"Where's my flying car?" has been the meme for impending technology that never materializes since before there were memes. And the trough of disillusionment for vehicles that can take to sky continues to nosedive, despite a nonstop fascination with flying cars and a recent rash of announcements about the technology, particularly from traditional automakers. Earlier this month, Toyota applied for an eye-popping patent for a flying car that has wheels with spring-loaded pop-out helicopter rotors. The patent filing says the wheels/rotors would be electrically powered, while in on-land mode the vehicle would have differential steering like tracked vehicles such as tanks and bulldozers. At an airshow in July, Aston Martin unveiled its Volante Vision Concept, an autonomous hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle it developed with Rolls-Royce. Aston says the Volante can fly at top speeds of around 200 mph and bills it as a luxury car for the skies. Audi used the Geneva Motor Show in March to unveil a flying car concept called the Pop.Up Next it developed with Airbus and Italdesign. If the Pop.Up Next, an electric and autonomous quadcopter/city car combo, gets stuck in traffic, an app can be used to summon an Airbus-developed drone to pick up the passenger compartment pod, leaving the chassis behind. Audi said that the Pop.Up Next is a "flexible on-demand concept that could open up mobility in the third dimension to people in cities." But Audi also acknowledged that at this point it has no plans to develop it. The cash-stoked, skies-the-limit Silicon Valley tech crowd is also bullish on flying cars. The startup Kitty Hawk that's backed by Google co-founder Larry Page announced in June that it's taking pre-orders for its single-seat electric Flyer that's powered by 10 propellers and is capable of vertical takeoffs and landings. The current version can only fly up to 20 mph and 10 feet in the air and has a flight time of just 12 to 20 minutes on a full charge. The Flyer is considered a recreational vehicle, so doesn't require a pilot's license. Uber says it plans to launch its more ambitious Elevate program and UberAIR service in 2023. "Uber customers will be able to push a button and get a flight on-demand with uberAIR in Dallas, Los Angeles and a third international market," Uber Elevate promises on its website.

Recharge Wrap-up: Tesla details factory expansion; Ford and SunPower raise money for Sierra Club

Thu, Nov 20 2014

Tesla has revealed the details of the upgrade of its Fremont, CA factory. One major change is the addition of a dedicated production space for the dual-motor P85D version of the Model S. Robots will be doing the battery installation on the Model S to save some time, and new export docks allow Tesla to get the cars out the door and on the way to their new owners more quickly. The new robots that move the cars around the factory have been named after X-Men characters, which makes our inner geeks smile. Check out the factory upgrade in the time-lapse video below and read more at Teslarati or at the Tesla Motors Blog. A program in Beijing for privileged registrations for EVs hasn't had much success. Of the 1,424 lottery winners, only about 30 percent went on to register an electric car despite a two-month extension of the deadline to do so. Buyers are likely discouraged by the lack of charging infrastructure, which the city hopes to ameliorate with the addition of 1,000 new charging stations by the end of the year, and by requiring new and renovated developments to set aside parking specifically for EV charging. Read more at Green Car Reports. The UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies suggests that laws designed to protect dealers and consumers are stymieing the adoption of EVs. Laws like the ones certain states have in place that block or otherwise restrict Tesla's direct-to-consumer business model are not helpful for companies that want to introduce new products to the market. They prevent companies from passing on savings to customers for whom they would likely make the difference in a purchasing decision. One possible solution would be to allow exemptions to certain selling restrictions for a certain number of vehicles sold. "This could give automakers the degree of control needed to work out kinks with early customers, develop scalable processes for supporting PEVs, and ensure that effective dealer performance standards are in place before handing the reins over to wholly independent retailers," according to UC Davis ITS. Read more at the UC Davis website. Volkswagen says its environmental program, called "Think Blue. Factory," is meeting the automaker's own sustainability targets. The main purpose of the program is to move toward eco-friendlier carmaking at each of its plants worldwide.
