 Greetings.

This is a very nice example of a 1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle. It is the desirable dark green color with beautiful EMPI mag wheels. It has been garage kept. It starts immediately, shifts great, steers straight and stops like new.

The 1971 and 1972 were the only model years for the flat windshield. This makes them somewhat unique in the beetle world. 1973 began the curved windshield era.

The car is rust free. It had only one dime-sized rust hole, located under the battery; typical for any car over 10 years old. There is light surface rust on the underside of the car. That's it. A 43-year-old rust-free car is unusual and quite desirable. But if you are reading this, you already know that. This car has been garage-kept since I've owned it and has only been rained on twice. (I know what you're thinking... a little odd, but that's just the way I am. I make no excuses.)

New interior items include:

New headliner
New carpeting
New front and rear seat covers
New visors
New steering wheel
New JVC AM/FM radio with Bluetooth and flash drive port
Subwoofer with Jensen amplifier
New EMPI short-throw shifter
New trunk liner
Tachometer
Oil pressure gauge
Voltmeter
Head temperature gauge
Completely insulated in the roof and the complete area under the carpeting

New exterior items include:

New rubber window trim
New windshield wiper motor
New outside mirrors and rear-view mirror
New windshield wiper washer (pump added to replace original air pressure method)
New bumpers
New windshield
New running boards
New wiper blades
New Insulation in the engine compartment and undercarriage
New McPherson strut stabilizer bar
New steering bushings, stabilizer bar bushings, and associated suspension bushings
New steering damper
New shock absorbers
New McPherson struts
EMPI 8-spoke mag wheels

Engine work includes:

New carb
New Bosch distributor and electronic ignition
New spark plugs, distributor cap and wires
New oil cooler
New push rod tubes
New headers and muffler (tailpipes extend from the correct tailpipe outlets with a pronounced sports car sound)
New clutch and pressure plate
New motor mounts
New oil pump
New fuel pump
New fume elimination kit
New engine compartment insulation panels (the panels that are on the firewall and sides of the engine compartment)
New seals around the engine to maintain engine cooling

....and miscellaneous parts too numerous to list

Much of the work on this car are important things that you normally not see, such as the suspension work, insulation, engine work, and so on.

No doubt I have forgotten to list many more new parts, but you get the point. I have spent almost two years renovating this car. And now it is done. My wife thinks I'm nuts to sell it now that it's finally done. But I think she's beginning to understand that I didn't do the work so that I could drive it. I did it because it's what I love to do. And now it's time to move on to a bigger restoration challenge.

My goal in selling this car is to make room in the garage.

I did not respray the car during the restoration. I didn't want to have to worry about every parking scratch and dent. The car looks good, but you can see the flaws up close. Overall, it looks good. But it's a daily driver, not a trailer queen. I don't want to own a car that owns me.

Mileage on the odometer is 58,000. I have no reason to believe that this is accurate. All receipts will be included with the car. I have documented the restoration process, so if you'd like more pictures, please let me know.

Volkswagen's 261-mpg hand-built XL1 headed for Geneva

Thu, 21 Feb 2013

After years of rumors, development and testing, the Volkswagen XL1 is finally about to become a reality. The project that began life as a daring 1-Liter concept car in 2002, will finally get its production-ready curtain call at the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks.
As soon as it hits the streets, the two-seat XL1 will instantly become the most fuel-efficient and most aerodynamic production car in the world. The car uses a plug-in hybrid system to achieve mind-blowing consumption of just 0.9 liters of diesel fuel consumed every 100 kilometers (and average of roughly 261 miles per gallon). Plus, the XL1 can go up to 50 kilometers on its battery power alone. Coefficient of drag is a miniscule 0.189, thanks to a tiny frontal area and an obviously slippery shape.
XL1 power comes from a two-cylinder diesel motor connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the 20 kW electric motor is fed by a lithium-ion battery. Both combine to give the XL1 performance figures that are, while not stirring, not shabby considering its extreme frugality: 0-62 miles per hour comes up in 12.7 seconds and top speed is nearly 146 mph.

This Or That: 1987 VW Vanagon Syncro vs. 1987 Land Rover Defender [w/poll]

Thu, 13 Nov 2014

As I scoured auction sites and classified ads for the perfect vehicle to take into battle with Autoblog Associate Editor Brandon Turkus, I knew I needed to find something unique. You see, I'm currently 0-2 at winning a round of This or That, in which two of our editors agree on a category, choose a side, and argue it out over a (mostly) friendly chain of emails.
The first time we did this, my chosen Fiat 500 Abarth took about a third of the popular vote in our reader poll. The second time, my lovely 1980 Oldsmobile 442 did just a little bit better against a 1989 BMW 635 CSi. Despite holding the opinion that my automotive choices, though perhaps a little bit more... obscure than my fellow editors, are still better, an outright win would go a long way toward boosting my vehicular self worth a few notches upward.
With all of that out of the way, even if three isn't my lucky number after all, I go into battle against Brandon knowing full well that I've made the perfect choice: A 1987 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro. My rough-and-tumble van/'ute has a formidable opponent in the form of a 1987 Land Rover Defender, which, truth be told, is exactly what I was expecting from Turkus, a self-proclaimed Rover aficionado.

Lexus tops JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study again, Buick bests Toyota

Wed, Feb 25 2015

It shouldn't surprise anyone, but Lexus has once again taken the top spot in JD Power's Vehicle Dependability Study. That'd be the Japanese luxury brand's fourth straight year at the top of table. The big news, though, is the rise of Buick. General Motor's near-premium brand beat out Toyota to take second place, with 110 problems per 100 vehicles compared to Toyota's 111 problems. Lexus owners only reported 89 problems per 100 vehicles. Besides Buick's three-position jump, Scion enjoyed a major improvement, jumping 13 positions from 2014. Ram and Mitsubishi made big gains, as well, moving up 11 and 10 positions, respectively. In terms of individual segments, GM and Toyota both excelled, taking home seven segment awards each. The study wasn't good news for all involved, though. A number of popular automakers finished below the industry average of 147 problems per 100 vehicles, including Subaru, (157PP100), Volkswagen (165PP100), Ford/Hyundai (188PP100 each) and Mini (193PP100). The biggest losers (by a tremendous margin, we might add) were Land Rover and Fiat, recording 258 and 273 problems per 100 vehicles. The next closest brand was Jeep, with 197PP100. While the Vehicle Dependability Study uses the same measurement system as the Initial Quality Survey, the two metrics analyze very different things. The VDS looks at problems experienced by original owners of model year 2012 vehicles over the past 12 months, while the oft-quoted IQS focuses on problems in the first 90 days of new-vehicle ownership. Like the IQS, though, the VDS has a rather broad definition of what a problem is. Because of that, a low score from JD Power is no guarantee of extreme unreliability, so much as just poor design. In this most recent study, the two most reported problems focused on Bluetooth connectivity and the voice-command systems. The former leaves plenty of room for user error due to poor design (particularly true of the Bluetooth systems on the low-scoring Fords, Volkswagens and Subarus), while the second is something JD Power has already confirmed as being universally terrible. That makes means that while these studies are important, they shouldn't be taken as gospel when it comes to automotive reliability.
