A classic 1972 Volkswagen Beetle that has been converted to all-electric power. Hop in, turn the key and quietly cruise up to 45 mph. This is not a N.E.V. but a fully street legal 4 person electric car. Plugs into any standard 110 volt outlet to charge it up. A DC motor is hooked up to the existing VW transmission and powered by golf cart deep cell batteries. The same conversion kit as mine (except I used a higher H.P. motor- D&D es31b) is listed right now for $2300 which does not include batteries, charger cables, or installation   (search e-bay for this)

Electric Vehicle Conversion Kit VW Bug Frame

.
I had the transmission re-built for $699 at Ranchotransaxles.com, which is legendary in VW circles and also had them put in a higher 4th gear. The rear shocks have been replaced with an adjustable coil spring type shock to balance out the battery weight. The lights, blinkers, wipers,CD player all work- horn is intermittent .Body is in good shape with a nice patina where the gold paint is fading. Some rust behind rear windows. All glass intact. The floor panel under the original battery was repaired at one point with a riveted in piece of metal, but the rest of the floorboard and frame is solid. Interior is original and in fair condition except front door panels which I replaced new 2 years ago. This car is ready to go. I have it priced very reasonably since the batteries that are in it need replacement. Currently you can drive about 5 miles on the flats at 45 mph, 10-15 miles if you drive 15-25mph around town. The original batteries that worked great for about 5 years were Trojan T-125 12 volt. You need 6 of them and they are available online or at any place that sells solar power equipment. If you want more range you can put in more expensive, but much lighter Lithium batteries. Also included with sale is a tow bar if you want to tow behind an R.V. or if you want to pick this Bug up in Colorado and tow it home. Shipping is not included in the sale.  Paypal only.

Yes, a family of 5 can live in a 1981 VW Westfalia van

Fri, Feb 14 2014

Automakers and marketers trying to reach environmentally conscious consumers who desire the simple life basically have two strategies: promote electric vehicles that can be charged through green energy or sell a 30-year-old Volkswagen van on Craigslist. Nicolas Boullosa and Kirsten Dirksen opted for Plan B and turned a 1981 Volkswagen Westfalia camper into a "micro-living" experiment. The co-founders of the simple living website faircompanies packed up their van and three young children for a road trip through the Pacific Northwest. They even turned the adventure into a documentary called Summer of (Family) Love, which you can view below. It's two hours long, so maybe add this to your weekend viewing list. They limited themselves to one backpack per person into a camper that they purchased off Craigslist and named "Westy." They stuck to their original intention of cooking all their own meals off a propane stove, creating a new little home every night in a different location, mostly spaces outside RV parks. They met up with other enthusiasts of the "tiny house" community who live like nomads. They were able to interview a few of then and, "With each stop we picked up some new piece of wisdom about life's essentials," Dirksen wrote in the faircompanies blog. 2nd annual Automobile Advertising of the Year Awards revealed

Tue, Jan 13 2015

There was some absolutely fantastic auto advertising in 2014, ranging from funny to inspiring. Marking the best of it from the past year, the Second Annual One Show Automobile Advertising of the Year Awards were announced during the 2015 Detroit Auto Show (full disclosure: Autoblog was among the award's sponsors, and Editor-in-Chief Sharon Carty was a voter). Unlike previously, there were no brands with dominance over the list this time. Presented by The One Club, the awards have an international scope and hand out honors in a variety of categories. In the Broadcast TV group, there were three winners this year. First, there was The Scripted Life from Audi for the Q3 about breaking out of life's monotony. Also, Dad's Sixth Sense from Hyundai marketed the safety features in the Genesis. Finally, Unbreakable Drivers showed manly men being tested for the Toyota Hilux in Australia. The Online Video prize went to the fantastic The Epic Split spot from Volvo Trucks starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. The best Interactive ad was the Honda video titled The Other Side for the Civic Type R, and the Experiential Advertising nod was for the Volkswagen Eyes on the Road clip that showed the dangers of texting and driving to a theater full of moviegoers in Hong Kong. Finally, the Public Choice Award went to the BMW commercial called Hello Future using the words of sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke for the i8. In the award not for videos, Jeep won the Print/Outdoor category for its Upside Down campaign. Check the ads out below, which show different animals when upside down. Also, look farther down for all of the winning videos and read their full announcements. Porsche again staring down another $1.8B in hedge fund lawsuits

Wed, 15 May 2013

The sequence of events from 2007 that began with Porsche's secret attempt to take over Volkswagen, and instead lead to Porsche being taken over by VW, continues to instigate lawsuits against the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer. A group of hedge funds that suffered over $1 billion in losses sued the car company in New York. Porsche had publicly stated it wasn't trying to buy VW, the hedge funds in question were shorting VW stock, and when Porsche's actual intentions were revealed, the stock shot up and the hedge funds took a beating.
The case was thrown out over the issue of jurisdiction, then appealed, only to see another suit filed on top of that. After that, most of the hedge funds withdrew their claims in New York and Porsche offered a 90-day window to refile in Germany where it is already fighting a number of other suits over the same issue. The hedge funds accepted the offer, refiling in Stuttgart for $1.8 billion in damages. According to Bloomberg, Porsche hasn't commented on the refiling, but as the same plaintiffs are involved, it's safe to assume that the carmaker still feels the case is "unsubstantiated and without merit." It has fared alright so far even in German courts, with two lesser cases against it thrown out last year.
