Very nice VW classic convertible finished in Carolina blue with black leatherette interior that has always been stored inside. I recently had the car gone over by a certified VW mechanic who specializes in older Beetles. It was this mechanics opinion that the engine had been rebuilt at some point but I received no documentation when I bought the car. As you can see in the photo of the engine bay...it's very clean with many new parts. Here's the work I had done and what I found out:

brakes are excellent and fairly new
has a current Virginia inspection through September 2013
has new front end bushings
all valves adjusted and carburetor cleaned
No rust- solid all around (see underneath photos)
front end just alligned
new ignition switch

The dealer I purchased this from told me that the restoration is about 10 years old which included new paint and a freshened interior... I was advised that for the past 7-8 years the car sat on the showroom floor of a Pennsylvania VW dealer. The interior was nicely redone and the only issue is one split seam on the drivers seat. No dash cracks. Fairly new pioneer cd stereo.

The convertible top appears to be on the original frame and has a liner and white headliner. There are no rips or tears in the top and it appears recent... includes a nice black boot cover as shown. **please note that the photos with the top up do not show it latched- thus the gap in the front near the window.

Tires are excellent and all chrome trim rings and caps shine.
Bumpers are rust free

The engine starts effortlessly, runs smoothly and does not smoke. No leaks! The transmission and clutch are excellent. Mileage is a guestimate based on the history I've received from the previous owner and when a restoration was completed. The odometer/speedo occassionally stops so the exact mileage is unknown. The title I have says 55,163 miles

This Beetle needs nothing and is ready for spring top down cruising. As always, it needs to be said that this car is over 30 years old and it is not a show car. There are the usual small nicks here and there but all appears exactly as shown in the photos. I have set the reserve below market value for an "average" condition vehicle- this car is certainly ABOVE average condition both cosmetically and mechanically. Finally- the car is for sale locally so I reserve the right to end the auction early if the reserve has not been met.

On Feb-14-13 at 13:29:55 PST, seller added the following information:

update 2/14:  just drove the car around town today and wanted to correct the description above which I originally did from memory... there is one dash crack in the typical spot above the speedometer. The speedometer IS working- the odometer is not. The fuel guage was working last week- now it's not. If you've ever owned an older car- you know the drill. Oh, and I got to drive around town in mid-February with the top down- can't beat that!

The mood at this year’s Paris Motor Show: Quiet

Tue, Oct 2 2018

The Paris Motor Show, held every other year in the early fall, typically kicks off the annual cavalcade of automotive conclaves, one that traverses the globe between autumn and spring, introducing projective, conceptual and production-ready vehicle models to the international automotive press, automotive aficionados and a public hungry for news of our increasingly futuristic mobility enterprise. But this year, at the press preview days for the show, the grounds of the Porte de Versailles convention center felt a bit more sparsely populated than usual. This was not simply a subjective sensation, or one influenced by the center's atypically dispersed assemblage of seven discrete buildings, which tends to spread out the cars and the crowds. There were not only fewer new vehicles being premiered in Paris this year, there were fewer manufacturers there to display them. Major mainstream European OEM stalwarts such as Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Nissan and Volkswagen chose to sit out Paris this year, as did boutique manufacturers like Bentley, Aston Martin and Lamborghini. This is not simply based in some antipathy on the part of the German, British and Italian manufacturers toward the French market — though for a variety of historical and societal reasons that market may be more dominated by vehicles produced domestically than others. Rather, it is part of a larger trend in the industry. Last year, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would not be participating in the flagship North American International Auto Show in 2019 — and that it might not return. Other brands including Jaguar/Land Rover, Audi, Porsche, Mazda and nearly every exotic carmaker have also departed the Detroit show. Some of these brands will still appear in the city in which the show is taking place, and host an event offsite, to capitalize on the presence of a large number of reporters in attendance. And even brands that do have a presence at the show have shifted their vehicle introductions to the days before the official press opening in an attempt to stand out from the crowd. In many ways, this makes sense. With an expanding number of automakers, with diversification and niche-ification of models and with wholesale shifts that necessitate the introduction of EV or autonomous sub-brands, there is a growing sense that, with everyone shouting at the same time, no one can be heard.

Volkswagen's 261-mpg hand-built XL1 headed for Geneva

Thu, 21 Feb 2013

After years of rumors, development and testing, the Volkswagen XL1 is finally about to become a reality. The project that began life as a daring 1-Liter concept car in 2002, will finally get its production-ready curtain call at the Geneva Motor Show in just a few weeks.
As soon as it hits the streets, the two-seat XL1 will instantly become the most fuel-efficient and most aerodynamic production car in the world. The car uses a plug-in hybrid system to achieve mind-blowing consumption of just 0.9 liters of diesel fuel consumed every 100 kilometers (and average of roughly 261 miles per gallon). Plus, the XL1 can go up to 50 kilometers on its battery power alone. Coefficient of drag is a miniscule 0.189, thanks to a tiny frontal area and an obviously slippery shape.
XL1 power comes from a two-cylinder diesel motor connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, while the 20 kW electric motor is fed by a lithium-ion battery. Both combine to give the XL1 performance figures that are, while not stirring, not shabby considering its extreme frugality: 0-62 miles per hour comes up in 12.7 seconds and top speed is nearly 146 mph.
