1974 Volkswagen Beetle Special Edition "Love Bug". Three hundred miles since completion of two year pan off, nut and bolt restoration with some upgrades. In late '74 Volkswagen released the Love Bug Special Edition to boost sales. They were all 1974 model year cars produced after June. They were only available in bright green and bright orange, they had VW sport wheels and blacked out trim. Each dealer was issued 10 but I have been unable to verify exactly how many were sold and some claim there were fewer orange ones. This Model 1191 "Love Bug"  was sold new August 7, 1974 at Walker Volkswagen, Falmouth, Cape Cod, Massachusetts as shown in the original owners manual which still includes the warranty card. The original dealers decal is still on the engine lid and was saved and cleared over during restoration to preserve this unique cars lineage.

When the restoration started on this 49k mile car it had never been repaired and was all original paint. The body was removed from the chassis, disassembled, and any issues were addressed. It was completely refinished inside and out with high quality Glasurit products. It is the correct L32K paint code called Phoenix Red, marketed in Love Bug advertising as "red hot red", but is actually bright orange in color. Exterior basecoat/clearcoat has been wet sanded and buffed to far better than original flatness and gloss. All exterior trim has been restored and refinished in the correct Love Bug satin black. Windshield was replaced as were all correct no molding style glass rubber gaskets. H4 headlamps, Hella taillamps, correct German molding-less running boards, and numerous other parts were replaced as needed. Windows are lightly tinted (legal) and new original style mirrors installed adding passenger side.

While the body was removed the chassis was completely disassembled and sand blasted. Both floor pans were replaced as well as the front frame head lower plate (a common problem on later beetles). It was mounted on a rotisserie and refinished in the correct satin black. The front axle beam was replaced with a VW OEM adjustable unit and rebuilt with all new parts. The car is lowered about 2 inches and has an oversize sway bar and KYB gas shocks at all four corners that work well with the lowered stance. The complete brake system is new including master cylinder, wheel cylinders, shoes, hardware kits, stainless brakelines, braided stainless flex lines, and emergency brake cables. Original and correct restored wheels, including matching spare, with correct center caps and lug covers.

The engine is a stock 1600 dual port. It is a correct 1974 "AH" block but is not original to this car. It runs perfectly with no leaks of oil, exhaust, or compression, and shows evidence of being a very low mileage rebuild or replacement, but true history is unknown. Various upgrades have been recently made including new carburetor, electronic ignition, aluminum valve covers, and full ceramic coated Eurosport exhaust including heater box elimination pipes. Factory heating system has been removed to improve engine cooling, boost performance, and to help prevent common rocker panel rust issues. Fan shroud has been shaved, engine tins filled, and body ducts sealed off. The original transaxle shifts smoothly, doesn't leak, has been cleaned, and oil has been changed to synthetic fluid. New mounts and new axle assemblies installed.

Interior has new TMI full carpet with Dynamat underlayment, carpeted  trunk and custom carpeted rear shelf. Seat upholstery has been replaced with original style black covers. Original dash pad with very minor crack, original headliner with one minor repair, and all original door panels. Later model VW leather wrapped steering wheel and new Retrosound stereo system. Glovebox door has faint outline of "Love Bug" emblem visible but missing and vintage "Herbie" decal. Glove box is intact and hood release works as it should.

This rare car runs, drives, looks, and sounds as you would expect a thorough restoration would. It draws interest everywhere it has been driven in the short time since completion. From thumbs up driving down the road to someone commenting at a cruise night this iconic car can't help but get a reaction. It truly is a fun and enjoyable little car. The car is currently inspected and I have a clean and clear Massachusetts title in hand. I can help load to ship but all shipping charges are Buyers responsibility. Happy to answer any questions and thanks for looking.

Tanner Foust checks out his new VW Beetle GRC rally car

Thu, 11 Sep 2014

Racing driver and Top Gear USA host Tanner Foust is a very busy guy. After all, he's competing in rounds of both Global Rallycross series and FIA World Rallycross Championship, not to mention his TV duties. However, we probably shouldn't feel too sorry for him, because his job puts him behind the wheel of some truly crazy machinery.
Case in point is his latest ride in Global Rallycross - the Volkswagen Beetle GRC. The German company claims that this all-wheel drive Bug makes around 540 horsepower from its 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and can shoot to 60 in under 2 seconds. Plus, if this video is any indication, this Volkswagen sounds like a machine gun when throwing revs at idle, and it can do some wonderfully easy four-wheel drifts.
Previously, Foust was driving a VW Polo for Andretti Autosport in GRC, but the team unveiled the look of the Beetle GRC at the Chicago Auto Show. Now, Foust is finally getting to show off his new office to the public, and like VW's tagline for the new car claims, it's way hotter than Herbie.

2015 will be the biggest year ever for cars at CES

Fri, Jan 2 2015

Like the SEMA Show, major automakers are paying increasing attention to the CES, with 2015 expected to be one of the most auto focused yet. Ford, Volkswagen, Toyota, General Motors, Hyundai, Mazda, Audi, BMW and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will all be in attendance when CES 2015 kicks off next week, taking up a record-breaking 165,000 square feet of space at the Las Vegas Convention Center. "We've come a long way from a single car on a carpet," Ford's Alan Hall told Bloomberg. Unlike SEMA, or a more traditional auto show, like the upcoming festivities in Detroit, CES doesn't necessarily focus on entire cars or the way they perform, but on the way our technology will interact with vehicles, and in how those vehicles will deliver information to drivers. "CES has become a major launch point for a lot of the big automakers," IHS tech analyst Mark Boyadjis told Bloomberg. "CES is a way for them to get on a global stage for technology." As for what kind of wares automakers will trot out in Las Vegas, we already know that BMW will show off an autonomous i3 electric car that can navigate its way through a multistory car park and can be hailed via a smartwatch app. According to Bloomberg, Hyundai will show off its own smartwatch app for the Genesis sedan, while Audi and Mercedes-Benz will show off autonomous vehicles next week. Automakers won't be the only companies looking to capitalize on CES. Tech firms, like chipmaker Nvidia, are becoming increasingly involved in the automotive game and will be in town showing their wares off to OEMs. "Two years ago, our booth would have been filled with PCs and people playing video games," Danny Shapiro, Nvidia's senior director for automotive business, told Bloomberg. "This year we made a strategic decision to shift the focus of the booth on automotive and de-prioritize some of the other things." Needless to say, you can expect to see a lot of news out of Las Vegas come next week. Stay tuned. Volkswagen officially grants access to UAW in Tennessee

Tue, Dec 9 2014

An audit at the Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga, TN has revealed that at least 45 percent of the facility's workers support unionization, leading the German company to grant access rights to the United Auto Workers. This is a tremendous step in the UAW's long-running and at times contentious pursuit of the workforce at Chattanooga. With this latest move, "local leadership is ready to move forward with additional conversations with the company," the union said in a statement obtained by The Detroit News. "As a starting point, UAW Local 42 will take advantage of the company's offer to establish bi-weekly meetings with Volkswagen Human Resources and the Volkswagen Chattanooga Executive Committee." The News reports that UAW Secretary-Treasurer Gary Casteel, shown above speaking at the Chattanooga plant last summer, claimed these meetings "will remind Human Resources and the Chattanooga Executive Committee of the mutually agreed-upon commitments that were made by Volkswagen and the UAW last spring in Germany. Among those commitments: Volkswagen will recognize the UAW as the representative of our members. We believe Volkswagen made this commitment in good faith and we believe the company will honor this commitment." It's important to note that despite Casteel's remarks, this is not a collective-bargaining agreement, Harley Shaiken, a labor professor at University of California, Berkeley, told The News. "But it is a step in the direction of recognition, which ultimately could lead to collective bargaining. This is not the end point," Shaiken said. "We don't know what's next. We're in unchartered territory."
