Up for auction is this beautiful 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle Cabriolet. I purchased the Beetle from a local customer because his wife demanded a vehicle with air conditioning :-) The Beetle was his personal built and while he spent thousands re-doing it, the wife finally got the upper hand. I normally don't just randomly purchase older cars, but when he handed the folder with receipts, and explained what all had been done to it I couldn't refuse and got interested. Being from Germany I remember all too well working on old Beetles in the 80's Germany. I asked for a test drive and I was just blown away. Maybe deja voue had something to do with it, but it was clear the Beetle was mechanically very sound. Just to list a few upgrades alone: The Beetle was fitted with:
1. Disc brakes all around
2. Lowered suspension with custom torsion bars.
3. Forged wheels all around.
4. Rebuilt Engine that came out of a 1969 Beetle. The motor was rebuilt 3 years ago for a 1969 Beetle. The owner of that lost his license and sold the rebuilt motor to the fellow who I bought it from.

There is a brand new carpet kit still in a box, in the trunk. The soft top has rips and holes so the owner decided to wait installing the new carpet until the vinyl top was replaced. Which brings me to the only issue the Beetle has. As you can see in the photos our Beetle is in dire need of a vinyl soft top replacement.
I drove the Beetle to our local inspection station a couple of days ago. They replaced the windshield wipers, one headlight, 3 light bulbs. So our a Beetle has a brand new Virginia State Inspection. I added the Paperwork to the folder. From what I can see the head exchangers appear fairly new. Both floor boards had been replaced recently.

The Beetle is not perfect if you look at the photos. Some of the weather stripping is missing on the inside of the front windows. The center rear is a fiver glass upgrade and it's not painted. Some of the fender plastic is pulled out. Both seats rattle lose, although the slide just fine, bushings? The paint is overall okay, but beyond perfect. The tires are fairly new. There is a small drip of oil from the typical oil filter cover in the center of the motor. Comes with several keys. The doors lock and unlock just fine. The body is very solid and I could not fine any rust holes. Our Beetle is certainly not a show car, but it's a blas to drive and the car is mechanically very sound!
Also comes with spare parts such as:
1. A complete, used soft top frame.
2. A whole set of used side glass and corner windows.
3. A box with odds and ends the owner handed to me
4. Original radio in the trunk

If I get a reasonable offer before the auction ends I will cancel all bids and sell the car. It is also for sale on our lot. If this is something you're interested in, don't wait for the auction because many of my listed cars sell before the actual auction ends!!!

European car sales up 8% in February

Sat, 22 Mar 2014

Three weeks ago an analyst increased projections for European car sales this year, expecting them to climb three percent compared to last year instead of 2.7 percent. That number is a postive sign after years of hard times but it turns out February was especially good, overall European sales climbing eight percent on a wave of southern European recovery and discounts - and this comes after five months of gains including January's 7.2-percent jump over the year before.
The only country of Europe's five largest markets to post a decline was France, just as it did in January, Germany, the UK and Italy posting solid double-digit numbers, Spain rocking the charts with an 18-percent increase because of a government program to encourage trade-ins.
The only brand to miss the wave was Volkswagen, dropping 0.8 percent as it watched the double-digit growth at sister brands Audi, Seat and Skoda lift the Volkswagen Group sales up by seven-percent. Peugeot overcame flat sales at Citroën to improve the group by 3.5 percent, BMW and the Mercedes-Benz/Smart combo rose by four percent, the Fiat group jumped 5.8 percent, Ford was up 11 percent, the Renault Group 11.5 percent, General Motors 12 percent and the Toyota clan by 14 percent.

Five reasons to love, or hate, the culture of German cars

Thu, Mar 5 2015

A few months back, we took a 500-foot view of the culture of American cars, dissecting prides and prejudices on our way to the conclusion that automotive allegiances can be simultaneously embraced and derided. We had so much fun with the narrative that we decided to do it again, this time taking a look at Germany and its world-renowned lineup of automakers, including the likes of Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volkswagen, among others. Join us below as we discuss the points and counterpoints that make or have made the German auto industry what it is today. And remember, Germany did pretty much invent the automobile, after all... The V12 Engine If America is known for the proliferation of the V8 engine, an argument could be made that Germany owns the V12. Yes, of course, other companies have created V12 engines – Ferrari, Jaguar and Lamborghini immediately come to mind – but the big 12-cylinder powerplants from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, in particular, have proven to be some of the most effortless, luxurious and downright over-built engines the world has ever seen. These days, having 12 cylinders is more a case of wretched excess than ever before, and yet, you can still stroll into your local BMW or Mercedes dealership and get a brand-new 760i, S600 or even an over-the-top G65 AMG, efficiency be damned. Best of all, since the majority of these German powerhouses depreciate as fast as an anchor sinks, nearly any auto enthusiast who dreams of a dozen cylinders can satisfy their carnal desires. Current Star: 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600 View 28 Photos Diesel Engines Remember how we talked about those glorious V12 engines? Well, you can even get one from Audi that runs on diesel. If your compression-ignition fantasies err more on the side of fuel savings, that's no problem, either. Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen have got you covered, with engines starting as small as 800 cubic centimeters (Smart Fortwo). If you want something a little more practical, it's hard to argue with a VW Golf TDI, which will provide plenty of space for you and three of your best friends, plus a fair bit of luggage, all while returning 50-ish miles per gallon. For the purposes of this discussion, we'd rather focus on the asinine levels of torque provided by Germany's high-end diesel engines than the lower-end fuel sippers.

Volkswagen Golf R Variant ready to haul ass, stuff

Thu, Nov 20 2014

Volkswagen seems to be playing a cruel trick on the American automotive public at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It's displaying its sexy Golf R Variant with no clear intention of actually selling the model here. The hot wagon launches in Europe in the spring, but the automaker makes absolutely no mention of the model's prospects in the US. Hopefully, its appearance in LA at least indicates VW is considering bringing it stateside. The great thing about this wagon is that it has everything that the regular Golf R offers, but there's even more room to carry stuff. The same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine makes 296 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque with a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox and 4Motion all-wheel drive. Performance is very close, too, with the Variant R taking 5.1 seconds to get to 62 miles per hour versus the 4.9 seconds the standard R needs to read 60 mph. The two of them also have the same tech goodies like ESC Sport stability control and multiple damping modes. The real advantage to opting for the estate is its ability to carry up to 57.2 cubic feet of cargo in the back. This hot rod wagon would seem to be perfect for the family that needs to haul some extra junk in the trunk, but doesn't want to sacrifice performance. Whether the Variant R makes it to the US remains a mystery, though. Scroll down to read the specs and feel a twinge of jealousy.
