1970 Vw Baja Beetle on 2040-cars
De Soto, Missouri, United States
Up for sale is a 1970 VW Baja fresh pan off restoration. Many new parts, I’m sure I’ve missed writing a few down. It has a freshly rebuilt 1600cc dual port engine. It runs great and it hasn't even got to break it in yet. It shifts through all the gears without popping out. I just got it running this week and have only driven it a few times tuning it. The Baja is not insured so I have not got it out on the highway. The heat works and is hooked up to the front defrost, other vents are blocked off. Headlights work, turn signals work, emergency flashers work, both wiper speeds work (slow and slower), brake lights work, and the emergency brake works. All window rubber is new, even the vent window seals. Side windows have new felt and window scrapers.
The Baja is solid, all
rust was cut out and metal welded in. The battery tray was replaced and
coated on both sides with POR-15. Other small areas on the pan patched and then
coated with POR-15. Then I coated both sides of the pan with Rustoleum.
The front part of the channel and firewall have been patched, also coated in
POR-15 then Rustoleum.
It has a fresh paint
job, coated in Urethane base coat, clear coat. Color is called Reflex Blue.
There are no runs, the paint laid down nicely. There is some orange peel in the
clear but it has a very nice shine. Someone could always wet sand the clear to
get the perfect mirror finish if one wants, but I didn’t build this Baja for a
show car. It is a great looking, fun to drive Baja. I made it to enjoy, not
something to hide away in a garage. The rims, front bumper, rear cage, and nerf bars are painted in a single stage acryic hot road satin black. No rattle can paint was used on this Baja. Unfortunately, I do have a scratch next to the driver's outer door handle. The passenger window also has a scratch and some tiny chips. Engine specifics: New 34 pict 3 carberator,

Fully Charged rolls into season 3 with VW XL1 and electric Land Rover
Sat, Jan 18 2014It's been some time since last we visited with British actor and electric car proponent Robert Llewellyn and his web-based video series, Fully Charged. The show, now sponsored by Ecotricity, has started rolling out its third season and now has available two episodes featuring a pair of truly unique – and diametrically opposed – vehicles. The first installment starts with some interesting numbers involving the host's Nissan Leaf and its energy consumption over the past 36,000 miles, but soon moves on to the ultra-aero, ultra-expensive Volkswagen XL1. Now, if you've already seen the footage from our own XL1 first drive review, there's not a lot new here except, perhaps, more enthusiasm and a better listen of the two-cylinder diesel kicking in. Still, it's a great reminder of a truly unique vehicle and we enjoyed the segment. The second episode features an electrified Land Rover Defender 110. This is a vehicle you'd more likely see on an African safari than at the local mall. It's not a home-built conversion either, but rather, something the company has put together "for the boffins to create the ideas and see if they work." Boasting a 50-mile range, it's certainly something we like to take on an off-road adventure. Llewellyn is given the chance to do just that, and though the course is somewhat milder than what we might attempt, it does feature a stretch of river and some rough, rutted tracks. You can watch both episodes by scrolling below let us know which vehicle you'd prefer in the comments. This writer is going with the four-wheel-drive. This content is hosted by a third party. 2014 Volkswagen XL1 [w/video]
Mon, 11 Mar 2013World's Most Efficient Car Impresses, Not Without Compromises
Among our many duties at the recent Geneva Motor Show, we were offered a pretty exclusive drive in the new Volkswagen XL1 hyper-efficient plug-in diesel hybrid. There is so much that is interesting about a car like this reaching production from a major automaker that it's tough to know where to begin.
First off, you should know that - at least for this generation - there is absolutely no chance in Albuquerque that this "1-liter vehicle" (i.e. a vehicle that can burn just one liter of fuel to travel 100 kilometers, or 62.1 miles) will ever make it into the hands of North American customers. We, too, were having trouble imagining an XL1 in typical American traffic, surrounded by comparatively massive pickups and SUVs. The driving experience had us recalling a couple of weeks in 1999 when we drove the then-revolutionary Honda Insight hybrid on US roads. We keenly remember the feeling of being very small and vulnerable, even as we felt proudly green in our 61-mpg Tochigi pod. Thing is, the Volkswagen is smaller still, and nearly as light despite its more complex drivetrain and safety features.
VW Golf GTI wrung out by Chris Harris
Thu, 27 Jun 2013Enthusiasts like nothing more than to crucify modern interpretations of their favorite performance models for failing to live up to some imagined ethos. Even the Volkswagen GTI has suffered its fair share of slings and arrows for growing in size and curb weight. Chris Harris recently spent some time with the all-new MK VII GTI to find out if growing up means giving up on what makes the machine so special.
Judging by his comments, Harris certainly doesn't think so. Yes, the new GTI is considerably more comfortable than its predecessors, but that's hardly a bad thing. The multitude of driving modes actually seem to add depth to the car rather than simply try to force one tool to do many jobs, and Harris even finds the machine's electronic power steering tolerable. As a result, Harris goes so far as to call the Volkswagen GTI "one of the best cars to actually own." How's that for high praise? You can watch the video for yourself by scrolling below.
