I'm selling a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle. This car is an antique. It's not in brand new shape. The engine code indicates it is an early 1970 1600 cc engine. I got that from a website but do not know for certain as I am not a VW fanatic. I bought this car for my kid. When she saw it she said "I meant the New Beetle"...It does run and go into gear. I've never driven it as it is not plated or insured.
It has a new master cylinder, all new brake lines and both rear wheel cylinders. The bleeders on the front came loose so I didn't need to replace them. The brake shoes all looked good so I did not replace them. The rear wheel cylinders did not leak, the bleeders snapped when I tried to open them.
I have installed an electric fuel pump. The mechanical fuel pump is still on the car but I have run the fuel through the electric pump.
I replaced the original sized tires with Continental ContProContact 185/65/15 tires. It rides, steers and look better(not to mention a heck of a lot easier to find a replacement for). The spare is an original size brand new full sized spare. It still has nipples and holds air.
It has new carpeting and a pretty sweet set of aftermarket seat covers. The original seat covers are ripped. If you are going to restore this car, plan on doing the seats. I checked out process and they are remarkably affordable, but the seat covers were way more affordable so that's what it got. The roof liner is in good shape and the door panels are mint. There are a couple of sun related cracks on the dash but I've seen way worse.
What I liked about this car is the floor is pretty damned solid. Having heard these cars are infamous for floor rot I checked it out pretty well. There is a 2 or 3 inch soft spot on the drivers side heater channel (is that what its called?) and it looks like there was a minor floor patch on the passenger rear floor pan, but the rest is solid. The running boards are complete junk.
The body on this car is in fantastic shape for a 1969 car of any kind. In walking around the car this is what you'll find: Center body front has a rot spot where the spare sits. Replacement panels are available for this. The right front fender has a small surface rust spot and looks like it had some repairs in the past as there is some primer on that fender. The passenger side fender mount panel (again- I have no idea what it is called) has some surface rust around the fuel tank door but nothing through the metal. The passenger side door has not rust or dents. The passenger side quarter panel has some paint bubbles indicating some rust starting and no dents. The passenger side rear fender has a small dent and scrape but no rust. The engine lid has no rust or dents that I see. The panel that goes across the back above and below the trunk lid is in great shape. The drivers side rear quarter panel has a few bubbles down low by the floorboards and the drivers side rear fender has one small blister. The drivers door would be perfect except that some idiot put a dent in the panel up high (even with the handle and about in the center). The drivers side front fender and mount panel are clean. there is a small amount of rust on the front bottom leading edge of the fender. doesn't go through and appears to be surface rust only. The roof is in great shapes and has no rust. The hood is in good shape but also has a primer spot on it indicating a past repair. The bumpers are rusty. I do have one new bumper but I forget whether its front or rear.
This may be excessive, but this car really is clean compared to most of the rusted out beasts you'll see. I wanted to fully disclose anything wrong with this vehicle, not scare people away. This car is perfect for the serious VW'er looking for a new project. Let me know if you have any questions.

Get ready to Camino-ize your fourth-generation VW Jetta with this kit
Tue, 05 Aug 2014Inexpensive, small pickup trucks used to be everywhere in the US, whether they were from Japanese brands like Datsun or Toyota, the truly weird Subaru Brat or even from Europe with the Volkswagen Caddy based on the Golf. These days that market has completely disappeared, but if you're willing to pick up some tools to build your own, there's a company out there bringing the Caddy back as a kit for the Jetta.
Mark Smith knows a thing about building a vehicle at home. He has over two decades in the DIY-car business as a co-founder of Local Motors and the company that became Factory Five Racing. His latest venture is Smyth Performance and already offers a mid-engine, VW-based kit called the G3F. His new product, though, started as a fluke. "I just wanted a shop truck," said Smith to Autoblog. He already had a Ford F-450 but found that he was driving around with the bed empty most of the time. The result was a pickup truck based on the fourth-generation Jetta that he dubbed the Ute.
The kit retails for $3,500 and ships in three, big boxes, and it's designed to be built and painted in a weekend. Buyers get fiberglass exterior panels, a fiberglass rear window surround, sliding rear window, an aluminum reinforced bed with a tubular steel subframe, taillights, a fully functional steel tailgate, and other parts. In the end, you get a vehicle with a six-foot bed and a payload of around 700-750 pounds. The Ute maintains all of the factory suspension, fuel tank and emissions equipment and requires just a few cuts in the body to complete. "We did a modern Caddy," admits Smith.
Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE concept previews new midsize CUV... again
Sun, Jan 11 2015Volkswagen has taken a big step towards the long-awaited second model to be built at its Chattanooga, TN factory, introducing the two-row Cross Coupe GTE Concept at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. The relatively handsome two-row crossover borrows its basic styling language from the CrossBlue Concept that launched at the 2013 Detroit show (that we later had a brief chance to drive), and the CrossBlue Coupe from that year's Shanghai Motor Show. To be entirely frank, it just looks like a much more production-ready version of the Shanghai concept. The more aggressive elements of that model, like its rear taillights, rounded wheel arches, and aggressive front and rear fascias, have been toned down considerably. In other words, this concept almost wouldn't look out of place on the average road. Changes in the cabin are similarly minor, with the same basic design as the CrossBlue, complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. While it's still quite clearly a concept car interior, it's not hard to imagine VW transitioning this cockpit into a production model. Riding atop the Volkswagen Group's MQB architecture – making it a relative, albeit distant, of cars like the VW Golf, Audi TT and the Euro-market Passat – the Cross Coupe GTE is motivated by a 3.6-liter VR6 that's been mated to not one, but two electric motors (one on each axle). The gas engine offers up 276 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the front axle's electric motor generates 54 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, and the rear can deliver a more robust 114 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque. That cacophony can be easily boiled down to this: the Cross Coupe GTE has a total system output of 355 hp and 280 pound-feet of torque, which is good enough to get the five-seater to 60 miles per hour in six seconds, on to a top speed of 130 miles per hour. As a plug-in hybrid, though, there's more to the Cross Coupe GTE then just its power output. Range plays a big role, and in that regard, this concept is fairly average. It can cover 20 miles when its 14.1-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery is charged up. Beyond that, the drivetrain can be set to a number of modes to optimize the behavior of plug-in-hybrid powertrain. In E-Mode, which can be locked in via a battery hold/battery charge mode, all 20 miles of range are available, although the Cross Coupe's driver will only have the 114-hp rear axle electric motor to work with.
VW pondering low-cost sub-brand for China?
Wed, 30 Jan 2013More detail is being sketched into the Volkswagen Group's plan to launch a low-cost brand for emerging markets. Late last year a German report quoted a VW rep saying that the brand has been interested in building a no-frills car, the kind that would challenge Dacia and Datsun, for a while. With both Proton and Suzuki effectively out of the partnership picture, a report in Reuters suggests VW could go straight to China, developing a car with its joint venture partners and building and selling it there.
Officially, company CEO Martin Winterkorn said the issue of a model for emerging markets would be decided this year but VW isn't any closer to confirming any kind of plan for a car in its portfolio underneath the Up!, remarking to Reuters about the China possibility, "That's an issue we're currently looking at."
