1959* Vw Beetle Classic Convertible, Recent Restoration on 2040-cars
Charlottesville, Virginia, United States
If you are a VW purist, stop reading now- this is not your car.
Nicknamed "Heinz 57", This classic VW Beetle convertible is titled as a 1959 as it was built on a 1959 chassis and running gear. The rest of the car is comprised of new parts, reproduction parts and parts from several other Beetle donor cars. 99% of the people who look at this car won't be able to tell...the remaining 1% will be stumped at car shows trying to figure out which part is from which year. That said it all hangs together well and is a fun runabout, around town car. I recently purchased two vintage Saab's and I'm getting set to put some of my classics in winter storage. I've decided to see if there's some interest in Heinz before he goes to winter hibernation. All of the restoration was done in South Carolina by the previous owner, a VW buff. I bought the car recently and discovered some needs. It just came out of the shop this week with over $2,400 in repairs (details below and I will provide the buyer with the receipt) so everything is all sorted for the new buyer. The car is 12 volt. The Beetle was painted during the restoration in 2007 and is cactus green metallic (02 Jeep color). The interior is all new and is best described as "salmon". Carpet is tan. Here's a brief overview on some of the parts and what vintage Beetle they were sourced from: Rebuilt engine from a 1972 Beetle (approx 3,000 miles driven since rebuild) All electrical is 1969 rear fenders are 1959 tail lights are 1965 (aftermarket) front fenders are 1965 front hood and deck lid and aprguageons are 1966-67 Seats are 1966 all door panels are 1969 convertible fuel tank is 1965 (external tank door removed before painting) steering column and ignition is 1959 New black canvas top with wood bows (no headliner), has a new off white boot cover (shown in photos) Speedo and fuel gauge is 1965 all new brakes and master cylinder (brake fluid tank is 1959 and located behind the spare) 1959 style radio antenna (aftermarket am/fm stereo with speakers underneath the rear bench seat) *as with many old Beetles, heater ducts have been disconnected underneath, pans all clean and coated with POR 15 *Repairs completed October 2013: oil changed with new oil screen complete tune-up and valves adjusted new ignition wires all new belts new king pins new short shifter and all bushings new heater hose new parking brake cable new fuel filter carburetor rebuilt with all new gaskets new rear brake drum new cv boot new ignitor ignition Nice set of aftermarket wheels with nearly new tires. The paint is a 7 out of 10 job- not perfect but very presentable. All glass is excellent. One of the rear window cranks is missing part of the handle. There is a 3-inch scratch on the top of the passenger front fender (see photo) that has been touched up. Runs great- drives straight down the highway. Always drives better with the top down for some reason. Beetles are very simple cars- the photos tell the rest of the story. Shipping is the responsibility of the buyer. Unless agreed to in advance, the car must be picked up within 7 days of sale. Car and title not released until all funds are received. |

2014 Volkswagen Beetle GSR is black and yellow, black and yellow
Thu, 07 Feb 2013Way back in 1973, Volkswagen decided it was high time to take the loveable air-cooled Bug racing. No, it wasn't painted in Herbie colors - Volkswagen called its sport-tuned machine the Beetle GSR, "Gelb Schwarzer Renner" or "Yellow Black Racer." Hence, the somewhat shocking paint scheme.
VW is bringing its sporty black and yellow Beetle back for 2014, and you can see live photos of it above. It's got a 210-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood (that'd be the hood up front, unlike the car's forebear), and a six-speed manual or DSG automatic transmission sends those ponies to the front wheels. Note that this car's output is up 10 horses on other turbo VWs, and the Jetta GLI and Beetle Turbo for 2013. The 0-60 run takes 6.6 seconds, and top speed is limited to 130 miles per hour.
Besides the in-your-face black and yellow paint, the GSR is outfitted with a large rear spoiler and 19-inch wheels shod with 235/40 tires. The bee-like hue carries over inside, with yellow stitching on black leather. Only 3,500 will be produced, each with its own unique plaque. Pricing has not yet been announced, but you're free to read through the press release below all the same.
Recharge Wrap-up: unofficial Tesla ad, VW will produce Budd-e
Fri, Jan 29 2016An unofficial Tesla commercial pays homage to the automaker's namesake. The video, which shows the Model S driving through a dusty, petroleum-addicted landscape reminiscent of a Mad Max film, features words from a speech by electricity-obsessed inventor Nikola Tesla. While Tesla (the man) talks about advancing technology into the future through electricity, the cars surroundings switch from the barren oil village to a green countryside dotted with wind turbines. See the video above, and read more at Treehugger. Famous rapper Akon is a Tesla fan who wants to power Africa with solar energy. Akon, who once boasted a collection of 28 exotic cars, traded them in for four Teslas, including a Model X. Also, his organization Akon Lighting Africa provides free solar electricity and lighting to communities that need it. Clean Technica talked to Akon about solar power, Tesla and EVs in a video. See the video and read more at Clean Technica, and get more perspective from Teslarati. The Volkswagen BUDD-e EV may be moving to production. The electric vehicle, built on the MEB modular platform with looks borrowed from the Microbus, made its debut as a concept vehicle at CES this year. Volkwagen's Dr. Volkmar Tanneberger tells Car magazine, "You will see a car that looks a lot like this, on the MEB platform, reach production. I can't say exactly when, but 2020 or thereabouts." He also says that the California camper van and Transporter van will continue production with internal combustion engines. Read more from Car. The 2017 Kia Soul EV will have more range. While it is scheduled for some minor updates, upping the electric Soul's driving range from its current EPA rating of 93 miles will hopefully attract more customers than a simple facelift. Autocar spied the next Soul EV testing in some heavy camouflage, but it offered no other details about the range beyond its reported expansion. Read more from Plugin Cars.
VW to unveil diesel-electric Twin-Up! in Tokyo
Fri, 08 Nov 2013We've received multiple reports that Volkswagen will be bringing a diesel-electric concept to the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, set to take place later this month. The car, called the Twin-Up!, is based on the Up! city car, with some sources claiming this is a thinly veiled concept that will eventually enter production.
According to Automotive News Europe, the Twin-Up! will reportedly return 214 miles per gallon on the US cycle by combining an 800-cc, two-cylinder diesel and an electric motor. It will also boast plug-in capabilities, and will be able to cover 30 miles on electric power alone.
Autocar has a more complete picture of the Twin-Up!'s powertrain, though, claiming it's a modified version of the hybrid system found in the Volkswagen XL1. The Twin-Up! will get a more potent, 47-horsepower electric motor to the XL1's 27-hp unit, but will retain that car's 47-hp turbodiesel. The battery pack will also grow, from 5.5 kilowatt hours to 8.6 kWh. Both of these increases are necessary due to the increased weight of the Twin-Up! - it's some 900 pounds heavier than an XL1.
