Nice 2007 Toyota Yaris small-car family sedan consists of four-door. The Sedan is nearly 19 inches longer than the liftback, and its wheelbase is several inches longer as well. Both models come with a 106-horsepower, 1.5L inline four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing. A five-speed manual transmission is standard and a four-speed automatic is optional across the line. The automatic gets a shift logic feature to help reduce hunting while climbing/descending steep grades. Fuel economy is very impressive; with the manual gearbox the Yaris returns EPA estimates of 29 city, 36 highway. The Yaris has a suspension that's tuned for quick steering response and maneuverability; it has a MacPherson strut layout in front with a stabilizer bar, and a torsion beam-axle setup in back. The turning radius is a tight 32.6 feet. Both body styles include seating for five, with headrests for all seating positions. The fixed rear seatback (split in the liftback with the Power Package) expands cargo space up to 25.7 cubic feet on the liftback. The Yaris has a unique instrument panel layout, with the gauges mounted high in the center of the dash. Front and rear occupants get cup holders and storage spaces. Standard equipment on both models includes air conditioning, tilt steering, and intermittent wipers. Both front seat-mounted air bags and roll-sensing side-curtain air bags covering both rows of seating are available as extra-cost options, as is anti-lock brakes. Noteworthy options include a Power Package, Charcoal interior, which brings a CD/MP3-compatible sound system with mini-jack input, a rear defroster, and power windows, locks, and mirrors. On sedans, the Power Package adds anti-lock brakes, a tachometer, and cruise control, while on liftbacks it adds a 60/40-split back seat that slides and reclines. This is a Gas Saver!!! |

Why Toyota Camry's Korea Car of the Year win is a big-time upset
Tue, 26 Feb 2013The 2013 Toyota Camry is officially the car of the year in Korea. The country's motoring press graced the Japanese sedan with the honor for the first time, officially marking a shift in prevailing Korean attitudes toward Japan and its products. According to industry analysts, buyers in the country are no longer simply choosing their purchases based on whether or not they're made in South Korea, but rather based on quality and personal choice. That's a big jump from a few years ago, when buyers viewed their purchases through a patriotic lens.
The Camry managed to edge out a total of 44 other cars, including hardware from both Hyundai and Kia, to become the first foreign vehicle to take home the Korea Automobile Journalist Association's Car of the Year award. As The Detroit News points out, just 10 years ago, domestic manufacturers held some 99 percent of the Korean car market. But a change in trade regulations has opened up the country considerably, and buyers now have access to a wide range of products from around the globe. As a result, Hyundai and Kia have countered by cutting prices in an attempt to keep their grip on the market.
Japan's government gives hydrogen vehicles a big boost
Tue, Jun 3 2014The Japanese government is really paving the way for hydrogen fuel cell technology on its roads. Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry is changing regulations on fuel tanks to make hydrogen cars more appealing to drivers, which should help put the country ahead of others in the race to develop a viable H2 fleet. Japan is raising the allowed pressure of hydrogen tanks from 700 atmospheres to 875, which has the effect of increasing driving range by 20 percent. This move puts the country in line with others with high-pressure fueling regulations. Japan is also in talks with the United Nations and the European Union to streamline inspection rules to make it easier to export Japan's fuel-cell vehicles. Toyota premiered its hydrogen-powered FCV Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show last year and plans to release a production version as early as next year. Honda also plans to build its own fuel-cell cars for 2015, and it debuted its FCEV Concept at last year's Los Angeles Auto Show. Nissan is sending mixed messages on hydrogen, both questioning the availability of a refueling infrastructure and working on developing the vehicles. In Japan, a relatively small country, increasing the range of fuel-cell vehicles makes creating a usable infrastructure a bit less daunting. Will hydrogen-fueled electric cars see the same sort of success as Toyota's Prius hybrid or battery-powered EVs? Only time will tell, but we can keep our fingers crossed that it will, and that the popularity spills over beyond Asia. Toyota and Lexus show off advanced safety research vehicle [w/video]
Tue, 08 Jan 2013While Google and Audi explore the possibilities of autonomous vehicles, Toyota and its Lexus division are studying the intermediate step of vehicles equipped with a deep suite of technology that help drivers make the best decisions. Introduced at this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Lexus advanced safety research vehicle is an LS sedan fitted with three high-def color cameras to detect objects up to almost 500 feet away, 360-degree Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) lasers that can detect objects up to 220 feet away, three radar units to keep track of other vehicles at intersections, a precision odometer on the rear wheel, GPS that estimates orientation and an accelerometer.
Currently testing at a purpose-built 8.6 acre urban testing ground at the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Susono, Japan the Toyota research vehicle is being used to study how to make better drivers, as well as figuring out how to reduce crashes as the industry's journey through passive and active safety systems progresses. In the event of a crash, new rescue systems are also being tested.
Further investment is being put into the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) that would use shortwave signals to harness information from the car and from other vehicles on the road, as well as roadside infrastructure and even pedestrians. Toyota reasons it could then build a picture of interactions and, for instance, alert the driver to a potential collision at a blind intersection.
