We are selling our 1996 Tacoma. Here is it's story.

We purchased this truck at auction about two years ago. It was owned by a public entity (can't remember which one) in Roanoke, VA. Thus, a southern truck and no rust. It was advertised as needing a clutch. We put in the clutch and put it on the road. The tach works but the speedometer reads 3-4 times faster than you are actually driving, and odometer adds up miles accordingly. So the 195,000 miles may be accurate, or may be inflated by the speedometer issue, we don't know.

I have searched and searched and can't find an instrument cluster to replace the existing one. The truck has a cable from the tranny to the instruments, but nearly all I see advertised for this year are from the 4Runner, which appears to NOT have the attachment for the cable. I asked at my local salvage yard, they looked it up in their book, and said the 95, and 96 were the same for the Tacoma, but finding one is not easy. So I am selling it as is, and you get to do the hunting for the cluster.

Overall the truck is in pretty good shape. Like I said earlier, it's 18 years old. There are dings and dents and scratches you can see in the picts. It will make a great runner with a little fixing. No rust which is a killer, and a Toyota, which is a winner.

Not many frills on it. Manual doors and windows. Split rear window. Bed liner. Standard bumpers which are a little bent here and there. Tires are fair. They don't need to be replaced now, but they are not new. There was no interior carpet, and the seat was trashed, so we went to the local salvage yard and bought the seat and carpet out of a 94. It looks pretty good, but there are some stains. I will get picts of the interior up soon.

A couple of other issues. We don't have a key to lock the doors. The key we were given works on the ignition, but not on the doors. Beware locking yourself out! . . . A guy bumped me last January at the polling place. We fixed the cracked valence and corner light with new ones, but the windshield washer resevore will need to be repaired or replaced.

All in all it is a good truck. I wouldn't mind keeping it, but circumstances find me with 3 trucks and a car right now, and I need to move a few on to new owners. I did some research and the other '96 Tacomas I found went for over $5000. At this point, I have about that in it, but like I said, need to move some extra vehicles. Starting the auction at $3000. No Reserve. Bid like you mean it. Email with questions. Thanks for looking.

Recharge Wrap-up: Toyota battery breakthrough, PSA's millionth BlueHDi diesel

Fri, May 6 2016

Scientists at Toyota have developed battery technology that allows for higher energy density. Using material from hydrogen storage, researchers at the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA) in beautiful Ann Arbor, Michigan have created an electrolyte that works well with a magnesium metal anode. Besides improving energy density for smaller, more powerful batteries, magnesium is also more stable than lithium, making it a safer alternative. Rather than guarding their secret, Toyota is sharing details of this breakthrough in order to advance the technology in hopes of an earlier mass deployment of magnesium batteries. See the video above, and read more in the press release below. Farmdrop – a sort of online farmer's market in the UK – is looking for help naming its electric delivery "vanimals." The Nissan e-NV200 vans are painted and decorated to look like cows, pigs, and chickens. While three of the vans have already been named, fans can suggest their own clever ideas for the rest of the fleet on social media. Those whose names are selected will win a month's worth of shopping on Farmdrop. Cary McCarface, anyone? Read more at the company's website. PSA has built its millionth Euro 6 BlueHDi diesel engine. The automaker builds two diesel engines – a 1.6-liter and a 2.0-liter – at its plant in Tremery, France at a rate of 7,000 engines a day. BlueHDi technology uses three different emissions control mechanisms to filter pollutants out of diesel exhaust, including an oxygen catalyst, an additive filter to remove particulate matter, and a Selective Catalytic Reduction system to reduce NOx. BlueHDi is used in all new Peugeot, Citroen, and DS Euro 6 diesel vehicles. Read more at Green Car Congress. Charging Ahead Toyota Scientists Make Breakthrough on Safer, Smarter Batteries May 04, 2016 ANN ARBOR, Mich. (May 4, 2016) -- For anyone (i.e. everyone) who's ever panicked when their mobile device chirped, "low battery," the future could be far less stressful, thanks to the advanced battery research of scientists at the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA). A new breakthrough involving magnesium batteries may soon open the doors for smaller, longer-lasting batteries for everything from cars to cell phones. What's the Big Deal with Magnesium? Magnesium metal has long been theorized as a much safer and more energy-dense alternative to current lithium battery technology.

Airbag recall widens to include BMW, Chrysler, Ford and Toyota

Mon, 23 Jun 2014

The recall of faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata has exploded today to grow to seven automakers. In most cases, only models in certain high-humidity regions were affected because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found in its investigation that moisture played a roll in determining whether there would be a problem. However, some companies opted for national campaigns. The exact number of affected models for these campaigns isn't yet known at this time.
BMW is recalling an undisclosed number of 325i, 325Xi, 330i and 330Xi models from the 2001 through 2005 model years and the 2001-2006 model year versions of the 325Ci and 330Ci for the driver side and passenger side inflators. Only vehicles currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands are covered under this recall.
Neither Chrysler's filing with NHTSA nor its press release list the specific models affected, but a company spokesperson told Autoblog that at this time it only covers the driver and passenger side inflators for the 2006 Dodge Charger in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands

Toyota pimps out Esquire van for Japanese businessmen [w/video]

Wed, 29 Oct 2014

A few months back we reported on a dealership owner in Japan who was petitioning Toyota to make a luxury van. The problem, he reasoned, was that he couldn't take as many friends, colleagues and clients around with him in his Lexus LS, and his Toyota Alphard van wasn't luxurious enough. Well, it seems like he wasn't alone, and Toyota has listened.
The Japanese auto giant has just revealed the Esquire, a new luxury van designed with just such customers in mind. It's significantly smaller than the Sienna we get in America, smaller than the aforementioned Alphard and about the same size as (this writer's favorite) the JDM Noah van (on which we gather it's based). But what sets the Esquire apart is its upscale appearance.
The boxy van is distinguished by its dominant T-shaped chrome grille with a unique emblem that encompasses a shield, sword, "the collar of a gentleman's suit" and the letters Esq. The flank is characterized by a strong beltline with chrome lower window frame and an expansive greenhouse with tinted rear glass. Inside the flexible cabin you'll find accommodation for seven or eight passengers (depending on specification), synthetic leather upholstery and wood and metallic trim. There are even wheelchair-enabled models on offer as well.
