Vehicle purchased in Reading, PA in 2006, so it has quite a bit of rust. Has had suspension replaced all the way around, but could use new bushings and swaybar end links. Has newish brakes in the front (within the last year), and comes with a set of brake pads and rotors for the rear. E-brake stopped working in 2013, but I haven't had a chance to jack it up to see what's wrong. Speedometer stopped working in 2009, but comes with replacement speedo cable that I never had a chance to install. Car comes equipped with cruise control, but it doesn't work without a functioning speedometer. Car comes equipped with air conditioning, but it hasn't functioned since I bought the car. I will include two canisters of the original refrigerant, if you can figure out why the system doesn't work.

After-market head unit, rims, and K&N cone filter will be left on the car.

As far as I can tell, this had a repaint at some point before it got to me. It wasn't an especially good repaint and could stand to have a complete tear down and repaint done properly, if you plan to keep it on the road.

I'm also including a set of two BRAND NEW, never even been mounted, straight out of the box bumper skins. I bought these directly from the dealership for $400 then never got around to installing them. These are no longer in production from Toyota and sell for $250 each online.

Additional parts included!
  • Repair manuals (both Haynes and factory repair manual, aka BGB)
  • Spare 87+ Tail Lights
  • Spare ECU
  • Spare side vents (one 85/86 and one 87+)
  • Brand new Raybestos Brake Rotors and ProStop Brake Pads for rear
  • 3 partial sets of side markers, including a partial set of clear markers
  • Boxes of misc spare parts from two previous parts cars
  • 2 sets of spare "triangles" for inside door mirrors
  • Spare front dash speaker covers
  • Spare "cassette" holder (goes between seats)
  • Spare gauge cluster and bezel
  • Spare glove box lid
  • Spare center mirror
  • Spare center ash tray and cigarette lighter
  • Original air box from engine bay (has been replaced with K&N cone filter)
  • Spare lug wrench set
  • Spare front air dam
  • 2 spare rear window "TOYOTA" visors
  • Spare C-Pillar trim
  • Spare factory side skirts (partial set only, missing the two small pieces)

Has the auto industry hit peak hybrid?

Thu, 12 Jun 2014

Hybrids are known for their great fuel economy and low emissions, but it looks like given current market conditions, only about three percent of new car consumers are willing to pay the premium for them. A new study from IHS/Polk finds that the hybrid market share among overall US auto sales are falling, despite more models with the technology on sale than ever before.
The study examined new car registrations in March from 2009 through 2014. In that time, the auto industry grew from 24 to 47 hybrid models available to consumers, but market share for the powertrain remained almost stagnant in that time. As of 2009, hybrids held 2.4 percent of the market; it fell slightly to 2.3 percent in 2010 and grew to 3.3 percent in 2013. However, 2014 showed a drop back to 3 percent. Overall hybrid sales have been growing since 2010, but they just aren't keeping up with the total auto market.
According to IHS/Polk, this isn't what you would expect to see. Usually, each new model in the market brings along with it a boost in sales. The growth in hybrid models 2009 to 2014 should have shown a larger increase in share for the segment.

Will Toyota lose up to 70% of its workforce in TX relocation?

Mon, 17 Nov 2014

Toyota's decision to move its US headquarters from its longtime home in Torrance, CA, to Plano, TX, was one of the biggest stories in the automotive industry this spring. With several months since the announcement, more details about the plan have leaked out. It seems that pulling up stakes could mean an even larger shakeup in the Toyota workforce than first thought.
According to Automotive News, Toyota intends to hang onto around 50 percent of its workforce in the move to the Lone Star State. However, even that figure might be optimistic. According to an unnamed insider speaking to AN, there is a fear the actual number could be closer to 30 percent. For comparison, Nissan retained about 42 percent of its workers in its move from California to Tennessee.
The actual percentage making the move is a mystery because Toyota is still rewriting its job descriptions under a single set of guidelines. The changes affect benefits, bonuses and the reporting structure, according to Automotive News, and employees' reactions could play a big role in who decides to go. According to an unnamed worker speaking to AN, the wait is hurting morale. Some people are even applying at the nearby Honda headquarters.

Toyota builds world's first 'outdoor website' for RAV4 promo

Thu, 08 Aug 2013

This whole thing started with the premise that Toyota's target RAV4 buyers are people who spend their time cycling, hiking, and generally not in front of computer screens. These people are therefore not able to benefit from the full website experience that Toyota has built for the RAV4. We should clarify that the video below is for Toyota South Africa, and maybe RAV4 buyers there really are the disgustingly outdoorsy ideal that us bacon-eaters are not living up to.
Toyota's agency partner, Hello Computer, set up a 1.8-kilometer track at a cycle park that replicated sections of the automaker's website with real physical displays and interactive feedback. Riders were asked to leave their mouses and hit the trail on a mountain bike to experience the RAV4 Outdoor Website and learn about the vehicle.
That seems like a lot of effort for something that's available on the smartphones of these hyper-active people who aren't in front of computers, but hooray for creatively conquering a problem that didn't exist. Hey, let's not be complete wet blankets - maybe some of the cyclists that ran the Toyota gauntlet got a RAV4 for their to- and fro-ing after the experience. Check out the video of the outdoor website below.
