I am a bilingual US citizen and oversaw every step of the process and documented the restoration with over 300 photos on both Facebook.com/volcan4x4 and Ih8mud.com. I attempted to strike a balance between originality and modern functionality while preserving some of the unique Colombian spec options and adding back some of the desirable US spec features. This truck is the showpiece for the launching of my Land Cruiser restoration business. Volcan 4x4, LLC. Please visit Volcan4x4.com. New 1980s style cassette deck with iphone connection and one hidden speaker under the dash The floor is shiny painted original green. NEW CAR SMELL. Original style jack restored and painted (not original). One of a kind 6 passenger layout for FJ40 (new seatbelts for 6). We combined US Spec twin buckets with a center armrest and console yet we retained the 4 passenger longer twin Colombian spec jumps seats. I am 6 foot 3 inches tall and fit very comfortably. The armrest fits me perfectly too. We had a custom roll bar fabricated to fit the 4 passenger rear jump seat layout. We kept the 18.5 inch horizontal line above the tub of the original US style sport roll bar to give her a somewhat factory profile. This roll bar is made of thicker steel and bolted to the floor in the front of the rear wheel well. The roll bar is finished in baked on textured black finish. Front seatbelts are bolted to the roll bar so you can take the top off and install a bikini top. The 4 rear passengers can exit through the ambulance doors and use a factory original metal step. This is a SIX passenger custom FJ40 to take friends and family to the beach or the ski resort. ITEMS TO COMPLETE/ DISCLOSURES. No major scratches and no door dings. I have a pint of the original paint. Original chrome door handles slightly pitted. May want to change them. The gaskets around the front side windows are new but not perfect. No heat and AC. I have a source for a low profile underdash kit for $650 plus install. This truck is Colombian/Australian spec and was not manufactured with the emissions controls that the 1983 US models came with (air pump and smog equipment). As such, buyers need to confirm they can title the truck in states such as California. Most states such as Florida have emissions waivers for vehicles over 10 years old for instance. The truck passed through US EPA and US DOT in order to clear the port in Miami and is titled in Florida. FINAL COMMENTS The six passenger Esmeralda is the unique product of a unique process whereby a bilingual US Citizen challenged local Colombian craftsman to show the US buyers the high quality of their work. They exceeded all expectations. We also added some modern US restoration techniques being used in the Land Cruiser community. Esmeralda was born in Japan in November 1982 and worked many years as a tough utility truck in a city in the mountains of South America. It was only fitting that she be restored back to near new condition again in October 2013 by the same people she served. She looks forward to another 31 years to be cherished and enjoyed by a Land Cruiser enthusiast family. VALUE A similar high quality restored green 1983 FJ40 soft top with well documented Colombian restoration was recently sold in early November at a live auction in North Carolina for $60,000 plus buyer's auction fee. My truck is currently insured at a high value through a well known classic car insurer. Please feel free to email me with any questions. This is a business for me and I want to sell this truck as I have new projects to work on. This truck gets a LOT of attention. Feel free to come see her in the Tampa, Florida area. Upon successful sale, $350 will be donated to Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa, FL and $350 to Shakira's Barefoot Foundation assisting Colombian children. |

Why Toyota's fuel cell play is one big green gamble
Mon, Feb 3 2014Imagine going to the ballet on Saturday evening for an 8 pm performance. The orchestra begins warming up shortly before the show, but it turns out the star performer isn't ready at the appointed time. The orchestra keeps playing, doing its best to keep the audience engaged and, most importantly, in the building. It keeps this up until the star finally shows and is ready to dance ... which turns out to be ten years later. That's a Samuel Beckett play. It's also how many observers, analysts, alt-fuel fans and alt-fuel intenders feel about the arrival of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) – the few of them who are still in the building, that is. Toyota's hydrogen development timeline rivals that of the US space program. In fact, within the halls of Toyota alone, research on FCVs has been going on for nearly 22 years, meaning that one company's development timeline for FCVs rivals that of the US space program – it was 1945 when Werner von Braun's team began re-assembling Germany's World War II V2 rockets and figuring out how to launch them into space and it wasn't until 1969 when a man set landing gear down on that sunlit lunar quarry. The development of the atom bomb only took half as long, and that's if we go all the way back to when Leo Szilard patented the mere idea of it, in 1934. Carmakers didn't give up on hydrogen in spite of the public having given up on carmakers ever making something of it, so there was a good chance that hydrogen criers announcing the mass-market adoption of periodic chart element number two one would eventually be right. Now is that time. And Toyota, not alone in researching FCVs but arguably having done the most to keep FCVs in the news, isn't even going to be first to market. That honor will go to Hyundai, surprising just about everyone at the LA Auto Show with news of a hydrogen fuel cell Tucson going on sale in the spring. The other bit of thunder stolen: while Toyota's talking about trying to get the price of its offering down to something between $50,000 and $100,000, Hyundai is pitching its date with the future at a lease price of $499 per month ($250 more than the lease price of a conventional Tucson), free hydrogen and maintenance, and availability at Enterprise Rent-A-Car if you just want to try it out. We've seen and driven Toyota's offering and we all know its success doesn't depend on cross-shopping, showroom dealing and lease sweeteners.
Toyota retires robots in favor of humans to improve automaking process
Sat, 12 Apr 2014Mitsuru Kawai is overseeing a return to the old ways at Toyota factories throughout Japan. Having spent 50 years at the Japanese automaker, Kawai remembers when manual skills were prized at the company and "experienced masters used to be called gods, and they could make anything." Company CEO Akio Toyoda personally chose Kawai to develop programs to teach workers metalcraft such as how to forge a crankshaft from scratch, and 100 workstations that formerly housed machines have been set aside for human training.
The idea is that when employees personally understand the fabrication of components, they will understand how to make better machines. Said Kawai, "To be the master of the machine, you have to have the knowledge and the skills to teach the machine." Lessons learned by the newly skilled workers have led to shorter production lines - in one case, 96percent shorter - improved parts production and less scrap.
Taking time to give workers the knowledge to solve problems instead of merely having them "feed parts into a machine and call somebody for help when it breaks down," Kawai's initiative is akin to that of Toyota's Operations Management Consulting Division, where new managers are given a length of time to finish a project but not given any help - they have to learn on their own. It's not a step back from Toyota's quest to build more than ten million cars a year; it's an effort to make sure that this time they don't sacrifice quality while making the effort. Said Kawai, "We need to become more solid and get back to basics."
Toyota confirms C-HR crossover to debut at Geneva
Tue, Oct 20 2015With the compact crossover segment booming with new entries, Toyota soon intends to burst into the popular market with a production version of the C-HR concept. The rakishly styled, little CUV will show off its final face at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show next March, and European sales will start before summer, Autocar reports. Customers in the US will likely get to drive the angular model, too. The C-HR concept's chiseled shape is expected to make the transition to the road largely unaltered. According to Autocar, customers reportedly really dig the razor-sharp look versus a more conventional CUV design. A hybrid is also expected to be included in the production powertrain lineup, but non-electrified options could be available, too. The Japanese automaker last displayed the C-HR at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. Underneath the avant-garde shape, the Toyota New Global Architecture provided the underpinnings, and a hybrid powertrain was there for propulsion. The concept's general design idea was actually the revival of a three-door crossover from the 2014 Paris Motor Show. In addition, the production C-HR is expected eventually to arrive in the US but likely wearing a Scion badge. Spy shots highly suggest that a crossover is already under development, and the entry would give the division a much-needed challenger to the Nissan Juke, Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, and plenty of others. Plus, the brand is keeping it absolutely no secret that a third, new model is on way to join the iA and iM.
