1978 Toyota FJ40.....Very Nice Original Condition

Here is the story:

This vehicle was purchased new by a gentleman by the name of Edward Shaffner in 1978 from a Toyota dealership in Harrisburg, PA. Mr. Shaffner kept record of everything he had done to the vehicle as well as most of the receipts. He kept a record from 05/20/78 when the vehicle had 00053 miles on it up until 11/14/07 when the vehicle had 65253  miles on it.

Mr. Shaffner subsequently passed away and an estate auction was held in April 2008.  The vehicle was placed up for auction.  I bid on the vehicle, but was not the successful bidder. The vehicle was purchased by Mr. David Weiser, who happened to be a neighbor of Mr. Shaffner and always liked the vehicle. After the sale, I went and congratulated Mr. Weiser. During conversation, we exchanged names and phone numbers.  I advised Mr. Weiser that if he ever wants to sell the vehicle to please call me.  I received a call a from the wife of Mr. Weiser a little over a year later. Mrs. Weiser had advised me that her husband had suffered a stroke and could no longer drive the vehicle due to the manual steering. Mrs. Weiser offered the vehicle to me. I was told that they had only put 30 miles on the vehicle since they had bought it at the auction. I advised Mrs. Weiser that I would love to purchase the vehicle but do not currently have the funds to purchase it. Mrs. Weiser advised me that she was in no rush to sell it and that it would be kept safe and secure in the garage.

I purchased the vehicle in August 2011 with 68120  miles on the vehicle. The miles are original and documented on a CLEAN PA title.  I installed a 2 1/2"  Black Diamond suspension lift and shackles from Cool Cruiser of Texas. It currently has 33" BF Goodrich tires with like new tread as well as aluminum Outlaw II wheels.  The vehicle drives, runs and looks 100%.  I still have the original leaf springs for the vehicle as well as the set or tires that I purchased the vehicle with.

The interior is all original. There are no modifications. The stitching in the drivers side seat is ripped. The material is not ripped, just the stitching from age. It is a $200.00 fix at an auto upholstery shop.  The original tool bag is still wrapped up and secured under the drivers seat. The seats still even have the small square Japanese decal on the backs of them. The black that you see in the pictures is from the original owner getting the vehicle rust proofed every few years. The frame is solid.  I could probably go on and on, but it's probably easier to just ask me what is on your mind.

There are two small spots that are starting to develop.....the first is on the rear at the right side bottom near the ambulance door opening. The second is barely visible on the right fender.

One side note.....last summer my son was behind a pick up truck and a can of paint fell off the rear. The paint can exploded and paint got onto the FJ.  The vehicle was taken to a professional detailer and all the paint was removed, however; there was a spot on the right rocker panel where the paint needed fixed.  The FJ was taken to Yancey's in Lebanon and the right rocker and side step were repainted professionally. The match is 100%.

Vehicle is offered for sale with a reserve and is listed locally as well. I will ship anywhere in the 48 contiguous states as long as payment clears first and you make the shipping arrangements. I will help any way that I can and you pay actual shipping. No extra costs or fees.

This vehicle is being offered for sale ONLY due to the fact that my son is getting married and needs help with the costs. This was always a father/son deal and now the investment will pay for his expenses.

THIS IS A COMPLETE VEHICLE...I have the hard top, two side doors, and rear ambulance style doors.  I also have a second set of tires in excellent shape mounted on the original rims and hubcaps.

I almost forget......I want to be as complete and honest as possible....the front driveshaft is currently off the vehicle but included. When the suspension lift and shackles were installed, the front driveshaft was too short. I had a local speed shop give me an estimate of $200-$300 to get it lengthened. I never followed through as the vehicle never went off road. This was stored in the garage over the winter and was never out in the rain as well. It was strictly a "fair weather driver".

Everybody's doing flying cars, so why aren't we soaring over traffic already?

Mon, Oct 1 2018

"Where's my flying car?" has been the meme for impending technology that never materializes since before there were memes. And the trough of disillusionment for vehicles that can take to sky continues to nosedive, despite a nonstop fascination with flying cars and a recent rash of announcements about the technology, particularly from traditional automakers. Earlier this month, Toyota applied for an eye-popping patent for a flying car that has wheels with spring-loaded pop-out helicopter rotors. The patent filing says the wheels/rotors would be electrically powered, while in on-land mode the vehicle would have differential steering like tracked vehicles such as tanks and bulldozers. At an airshow in July, Aston Martin unveiled its Volante Vision Concept, an autonomous hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle it developed with Rolls-Royce. Aston says the Volante can fly at top speeds of around 200 mph and bills it as a luxury car for the skies. Audi used the Geneva Motor Show in March to unveil a flying car concept called the Pop.Up Next it developed with Airbus and Italdesign. If the Pop.Up Next, an electric and autonomous quadcopter/city car combo, gets stuck in traffic, an app can be used to summon an Airbus-developed drone to pick up the passenger compartment pod, leaving the chassis behind. Audi said that the Pop.Up Next is a "flexible on-demand concept that could open up mobility in the third dimension to people in cities." But Audi also acknowledged that at this point it has no plans to develop it. The cash-stoked, skies-the-limit Silicon Valley tech crowd is also bullish on flying cars. The startup Kitty Hawk that's backed by Google co-founder Larry Page announced in June that it's taking pre-orders for its single-seat electric Flyer that's powered by 10 propellers and is capable of vertical takeoffs and landings. The current version can only fly up to 20 mph and 10 feet in the air and has a flight time of just 12 to 20 minutes on a full charge. The Flyer is considered a recreational vehicle, so doesn't require a pilot's license. Uber says it plans to launch its more ambitious Elevate program and UberAIR service in 2023. "Uber customers will be able to push a button and get a flight on-demand with uberAIR in Dallas, Los Angeles and a third international market," Uber Elevate promises on its website.

Aging Prius, dropping gas prices putting hurt on hybrid, EV sales

Fri, 24 Oct 2014

"As Prius represents by far the biggest chunk of the hybrid marketplace, where Prius goes, the segment goes," - Ed Kim, Autopacific
Fuel prices in the US have been tumbling for the last several weeks, with the average price of a gallon of gas at $3.120 as of October 20, according to the US Energy Information Administration. That price reflects a serious recent drop from $3.299 on October 6. Reports have even suggested that those low numbers might not change for a little while, perhaps as long as years. While drivers certainly love paying less at the pump, the change may be hurting the market for more fuel-efficient models, including the Toyota Prius.

Toyota nears $40B cash reserve as calls grow for new investment, payouts

Wed, 05 Feb 2014

With the April 15 tax deadline just a few months away, our US readers will be faced with a decision should they get a refund: save or spend? It seems this issue is one many of us face whenever there's a windfall, trying to decide whether we should set the money aside in an account of some sort or use it as a down payment on a new car or a trip to the Apple store. Unsurprisingly, major corporations face a similar, albeit more complex, issue.
Take Toyota, for example. With President Akio Toyoda at the helm, the Japanese manufacturer has gracefully weathered recalls and natural disasters, all while turning beaucoup profits. Last quarter, profits quintupled to 434.4-billion yen ($4.3-billion USD), according to Bloomberg. Toyota also upped its forecast for the end of fiscal year 2013 (which ends on March 31 for Japan), to a record 1.9-trillion yen (about $18.8 billion). Now, the Japanese brand is reportedly sitting on a cash pile of nearly $40 billion, leaving Toyoda-san in an envious predicament - what should the company do with all that money?
Some think Toyota should be doing something, anything with that big stack of cash.
