1982 FJ45 in the rare Troop Carrier (Troopy, VIN FJ45315278) configuration, with even rarer pop-top Westfalia-typle professional camper conversion! I've built her up to sleep two adults down below and two kids up top, or one adult up top. So much more unique and more useful than any common FJ40! She's set up with:

--4.2L engine runs like a top. H41 Aussie-spec 4-speed with granny low crawler 1st gear.

--Toyota power steering

--Electronic ignition and all new spark plugs and wires. Starts easily and better fuel economy, about 15mpg.

--rebuilt carburetor works great

--Disc brakes front, drum rear. Fronts have Aussie-spec cooling scoops, cool feature US rigs never got

--On-board air compressor with hose and gauge--see photo

--All new radiator, hoses, belts and thermostat for reliable hot weather travel

--Really cool and extremely rare 33" x 9.5" x 15 "pizza cutter" skinny mud terrain tires with 95% tread, on original Land Cruiser 15" wheels with original hub caps. Yes, 9.5" wide by true 33" tall! Tires of this spec are almost impossible to find.

--Hefty spring packs and 3" lift. Old Man Emu steering stabilizer.

--All new steering joints and relay arm. Aussie-spec full floater rear axle.

--Had factory A/C, removed by previous owner, don't know why. But, glory be, all the totally unobtanium factory brackets and pulleys are there! Bolt in a new compressor, plumb it and you're good to go--no fab work!

--Rare, port installed pop-top Westfalia-style camper roof done in Australia is what it's all about! Pop-tops are the ultimate camper accessory. Sitting low to the roof of your vehicle when not in use, they don't affect fuel consumption or access to low areas like a high-top does; when parked, simply turn the latches, push up, and you have instant headroom and natural light. I'm 5'11" and when up it just brushes my head. Takes only one person to push up or pull down via handles, it's easy, a woman or teenager could do it. Accordion/futon style wood platform sleeps 1-2 people up top. All seals good, does not leak. In good condition, windows do have cuts and holes in screens.  Much more fuel efficient and lower center of gravity than a big ol' roof top tent.

--Down below is a removable platform with two comfy 4" foam mattresses. Full color coded storage/drawers/cabinets on the left and right sides holds the Primus 2-burner stove, 5-gallon water tank complete with P-trap for running water out the rear (see photo), cooking gear, solar panel, extra tent, mosquito netting, camp lamp, extra tools and parts, sliding table, and much, much more. Left side (green) has two boxes with tons of storage space.

--Note the grey sun/rain awning as well (left side)!!

--You can camp, travel and live out of this Land Cruiser in comfort.

--Brand new Pierce 12,500-lb worm gear winch. Total beast. Slow, but can pull this rig over a house.

--Alpine stereo with iPod connector. Original radio still there--amazing! Also has factory digital clock.

--Paint is decent but getting tired with small rust spots starting. Main rust is found at rear floor sill corners (small holes, see pic), typical bottom of rear doors, B-pillars, and driver floor, which has several 2-inch holes. Frame is fine, surface rust only.

--Dual water tanks, one interior, one exterior. Exterior tank flow comes out small hinged box visible in photo left side, with a hose inside with threaded end. Very handy to have running water both rear and side.

--2.5 gallon propane tank built into truck. The storage box is plumbed to allow the tank to flow propane out a line to the rear of the rig. Or, remove the tank, place anywhere, and hook up the attachment that has a lantern up top and the Primus stove below--see photo!

--Two fuel tanks including 23-gallon long range second tank. Switch on dash shows either tank's fuel level, while another switch (red in dash photo) powers the fuel transfer pump to flow fuel from the secondary tank into primary. 600+ mile range on two tanks.

Such a sweet rig, runs great, goes anywhere, sleeps a family and the poptop camper makes it unlike any Land Cruiser out there. Check my feedback and bid with confidence. I am a Cruiserhead who has now cleared out my barn full of cool old Cruisers--FZJ80, HJ47, a rare little Blizzard and an HJ61 with 12H-T. This is the last one to go. Truck is in Gig Harbor WA. Sold "as is" with no expressed or implied warranties. Clear title. US plates stay with me, Aussie New South Wales plates go with truck. No Paypal, cash or cashier's check within 7 days. Happy to meet transport truck in Gig Harbor, or grab the Kitsap Airporter from SeaTac airport straight to Gig Harbor and drive it home. I 100% welcome inspections, test drives or taking to mechanic (you arrange and pay) for a checkout. NO RESERVE, first winning bid takes this expedition Land Cruiser home. Thank you and happy bidding!

KBB 2013 Brand Image Awards has some obvious and oddball winners

Sat, 30 Mar 2013

The sixth edition of the Kelley Blue Book Brand Image Awards have crowned a wide range of winners - in a couple of cases the recipient of the laurels might say more about KBB users than they do about the actual winner. Compiled from the responses of more than 12,000 shoppers on KBB.com over the past year, there are 13 categories broken into non-luxury, luxury and truck segments "representing the combined wisdom of the American car-buying public."
The award categories have been revamped this year, with some dropping off, some new ones appearing and at least one other given a new term. What isn't surprising is that Honda won Most Trusted Brand for the second year running, Best Value Brand for the third year in a row and took Best Overall Brand, which wasn't on last year's list of awards.
On our own shores, in the non-luxury categories Chrysler got Most Refined Brand and Buick took Best Value Luxury Brand. Neither one of those marques won anything in last year's Brand Image Awards, while Cadillac, which won Best Interior Design Brand and Best Comfort Brand last year - those awards disappeared this year - went home without a single accolade.

Toyota Camry Dragster takes the phrase 'sleeper' to its logical extreme [w/video]

Wed, 05 Nov 2014

Sometimes, looks can be deceiving. This is certainly one of those times, as Toyota successfully trolled the entirety of the media corps at the 2014 SEMA Show by rolling an innocent-looking Camry onto the floor... only to lift literally the entirety of its body to reveal an 850-horsepower, tube-framed dragster. Well, we have been asking for a more driver-oriented Toyota.
While it's designed to go fast in a straight line, the origin of the Camry Dragster's parts might be surprising. The 5.7-liter V8 engine, transmission, rear axle and electronics were plucked from the Toyota Tundra pickup. Toyota Racing Development donated a supercharger, while a wet-nitrous-injection system was also tacked on for that little extra something. Those goodies will help propel this anonymous looking monster through the quarter mile in just 9.8 seconds.
"This is the most extreme build we've ever unveiled at SEMA," said Toyota's motorsports chief Steve Appelbaum said in a statement. "The transformation from seemingly stock Camry to full-blown racecar just shocks the senses. Chuck Wade and the team at Motorsports Technical Center did a truly spectacular job executing the vision of this project."

How Toyota's neighbor delayed 23,000 of its deliveries

Thu, 17 Jul 2014

Don't you just hate when your neighbors' mess becomes your problem? Toyota certainly has good reason to be upset, after an dirty mishap at a steel mill delayed thousands of vehicle exports from its nearby port in Nagoya, Japan, (pictured above) by as much as a month.
The messy situation occurred on June 22 when the mill near the port lost power and had to burn off an excess buildup of coke oven gas - which isn't exactly a situation friendly to living beings or the environment. According to Automotive News, it caused a massive amount of smoke to emit from the plant that fell as soot and tar on about 23,000 vehicles that were waiting to be shipped out. Getting the models properly cleaned off has been quite a task. A team of 5,000 workers were at the port until this week getting them gleaming again.
Potential Toyota buyers in North America have no need to fret about getting a sullied car, though. A Toyota spokesperson told Automotive News that none of the vehicles were bound for this continent. The automaker is reportedly considering asking the mill's owners for reimbursement for the cost of the weeks of cleanup. Paying for the mistake is, after all, the neighborly thing to do.
