1978 FJ40 Turbo Diesel 5-Speed

I am selling this beautiful custom built, one-off Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 for her owner. This 1978 FJ40 was 100% disassembled down to the frame. It was then built up using the highly skilled automotive expertise of two respected organizations: Project Restoration and Import Performance, both of Bend, Oregon.  The 2012 build utilized countless OEM Toyota parts.  Every OEM part that could be found was used down to door handles, heater core, and small inner glove box parts!  A thick file of receipts is included and available for review.

The Frame & Body

The frame was blasted and powder coated. The tub was blasted and any minor rust was removed and replaced with new steel. The original spot welds remain showing as original. The truck was totally re-painted  in Toyota Royal Blue (code 452) with single stage PPG paint. The underside has color-matched polyurea (LineX) coating applied. The truck was reassembled using all new stainless steel hardware.

The Engine & Transmission

The fuel injected 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine, 5-speed transmission, wiring, and rear axle have been transplanted with components used in the Toyota Hilux and/or 4Runner.  The 1KZ-TE is a 3.0 L (2982 cc), 4 cylinder, SOHC, 2 valves per cylinder Rolay engine with indirect injection. Bore is 96 mm and stroke is 103 mm, with a compression ratio of 21.2:1. Maximum output is 130 hp (97 kW) @ 3600 rpm with maximum torque of 287 N·m (211 lb·ft) @ 2000 rpm. Redline is 4400 rpm.

First produced in 1993, it is still used in new model vehicles today. The 1KZ-TE also adopts the electronically controlled fuel injection, ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System - intelligent) technology which is similar in basic construction to a modern gasoline injector, although utilizing considerably higher injection pressures, it is an indirect injection engine which gives it a significant efficiency and fuel consumption penalty. It was replaced in most markets with the 1KD-FTV engine which uses common-rail direct injection and delivers more power while using considerably less fuel. The engine, transmission and various other mechanical components were installed by Import Performance in Bend, OR.

The Interior Cabin

The interior was totally redone from the floor to the headliner. The floors and wheel tubs are done the same tough color-matched polyurea (LineX) coating. All seats were have new upholstery. Between the front bucket seats you will find a locking Tuffy console. New seat belts were installed and a new headliner and floor mats with sound dampening. The dash pads and door panels are like new. All gauges, controls and systems have been rebuilt as needed and work flawlessly.

Toyota recalling select 2014 Camry and Avalon models

Thu, 06 Nov 2014

Toyota has announced a rather small voluntary recall, affecting 5,650 Avalon and Camry sedans from model year 2014. Both gas and hybrid models are included in the action.
This recall focuses on the left front lower suspension arm, which may have a bad bolt connecting it to the ball joint. If the car hits a big enough pothole - a real concern as we head into winter - or suffers a major impact, the two components could separate, at which point steering control would more or less vanish.
According to Toyota, there have been no crashes, injuries or deaths due to this problem. Toyota is notifying owners, who will need to report to dealers for a free replacement lower suspension arm.

Toyota's Texas move could boost state's economy by $7.2B in 10 years

Thu, 15 May 2014

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and apparently that includes the Toyota's effect on the economy. The giant Japanese automaker's new headquarters in Plano, TX, will add an estimated $7.2 billion to the state over the next 10 years, according to a new study commissioned by the city and cited by Bloomberg.
The benefits appear to be an absolute steal compared to the direct incentives that Plano and the state are giving Toyota. The report finds that by the time the automaker's campus is complete in 2018, it could have 3,650 full-time workers there at an average salary of $104,000. The city has prepared $6.75 million in grants, plus property tax discounts, according to Bloomberg. In addition to that, the state is offering the business $40 million in incentives from its Texas Enterprise Fund. This is still a fraction of what Toyota is estimated to bring in.
Toyota announced in April that it would move its US operations to Plano after being headquartered in California since 1957. The move affects thousands of employees from the sales and engineering divisions. The first workers will arrive there this fall, but Toyota will eventually have a whole campus in Plano by late 2017. The move is expected to save it huge amounts in taxation and offer employees a lower cost of living. Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz also says that the Texas location puts the headquarters closer to more of the business' factories in the south. Texas certainly appears to be showing it some southern hospitality.

Toyota's Psy-style Waku-Doki ad inherits Japan's bizarre ad crown

Tue, 29 Jul 2014

A new Japanese Toyota ad featuring crisply suited businessmen driving into the jungle only to segue into a Psy-style music-video dance-off with a gorilla and natives is the latest car commercial to go viral. Jungle Wakudoki is the newest installment in a grand tradition of bizarre ads from the island nation that are by turns hilarious, head-scratching and occasionally even frightening.
Let's face it: My people are weird.
I'm half-Japanese and take suitable pride in my Asian roots, but even I can't figure out what's been slipped into the water coolers of the country's ad agencies much of the time - or the nation at large, for that matter. From Japan's ubiquitous obsession with all things adorable (kawaii) to its offbeat sense of humor and its bizarrely perverse and violent tentacle porn, it's clear there's a lot going on in the culture, and only some of it bubbles up to the surface in its marketing efforts. Much of the strangest and most amazing ads are for non-transportation products (e.g. laundry soap, snacks, energy drinks), but the automotive space has its fair share. This latest Toyota ad had me trawling YouTube for a common theme, trying to make sense of why these spots are the way they are. Scroll down to watch the Toyota ad in question as well as a bunch of other examples of Japan's most bizarre car-related ads and see if you can't find the thread that runs between them. Is it just that something's being lost in translation? Have your say in Comments.
