1974 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 -- an original off road machine!
Electronic Fuel Injected Chevy 350 V8, Auto Transmission, Front Disc Brakes, Front/Rear Lockers, Power Steering, Roll cage, SOA lift, Super Swampers, & much more!!
It spent the first 30 years in sunny rust - free California before I bought her in 2004. I've kept it garaged in Texas ever since. I bought this FJ as a project and have spent a decade putting it together the right way and making sure everything works. It's the perfect combination of power, EFI reliability, smooth steering, excellent braking, and awesome-ness! You won't believe that a 1974 truck this size can drive, stop, and steer this well.
It runs like a champ and can go anywhere. She's conquered Moab, the Rubicon trail, Katemcy Rocks, Barnwell, and a ton of places in between. Hear it run: A cold start: The Details - DRIVETRAIN: Engine Chevy 350 converted to TBI (throttle body injection) – runs great and starts first time. Fuel injected TBI conversion by “Affordable fuel injection” with optional ALDL computer port for diagnostics and “check engine” light tied into the ECM that can be used to pull trouble codes – on dash next to ARB switch see pics. TBI completely rebuilt 11/2013, gas tank removed/cleaned, new fuel pump/filter/FI lines. Automatic transmission with remote mount transmission cooler – shifts great, no
slipping Previous owner installed a tab for the reverse lights that prevents the linkage from shifting into park. I keep the parking brake well adjusted and have always set it with the Land Cruiser in neutral without any problems. Toyota

Automatically disengages when turning with minimal noise. Truthfully, you don’t even notice it until you need it – then it’s perfect traction. Disc Brake conversion on front axle. New Larger/stronger brake booster (T100) – see pics New Master cylinder upgrade (FJ80) – see pics STOPS LIKE CHAMP! Interior/Exterior/Electrical Recaro Corbeau seats with 5 point harnesses. Driver’s seat adjusts front to back, passenger’s seat is fixed Full Roll Cage Entire tub is Bed Lined, as well as, roll cage, wheel wells, front fenders, diamond plate rear corner guards & front/rear bumpers Newer style
front windshield (1978) with electric wipers instead of older vacuum style Newer style
(1975-1981) FJ40 Turn Signals (gives it the “signature FJ40” look) All lights, turn signals, brake lights work – except reverse lights Factory lower rear metal half doors – does not have upper rear hatch These are not installed because the spare tire mount sits there ISSUES There are, currently, no known mechanical problems with this cruiser. It runs, drives, stops, and steers like it should. The reverse lights don't work and I've never messed with them b/c it passes TX inspection without them. The speedometer works, but I cannot verify it's accuracy with the tires/lift/gears/etc. The odometer stopped at 95,999 long before I got it. I just repaired the sending unit for the gas tank b/c it always showed 1/2 tank when low - I haven't filled it back up to make sure it's working yet. It has aftermarket oil pressure and temp gauges that work well. I've replaced any leaking gaskets over the years and as of now everything is dry underneath. The gaskets do require occasional replacing and you'll know it's time by any drips. If the winning bidder is interested, I can
include a full Hard Top with glass and both factory front doors – from a donor FJ40
– they’ve never been installed on this Landcruiser and need a bit of TLC to
restore them. I never pursued them because I think it looks better without the
top/doors. This Landcruiser runs/drives great and is a beast of a
truck. I’m moving out of state and can’t take an extra vehicle, so I’ve got to
let her go. For a cruiser this size, it drives very straight, stops on a
dime, and turns with minimal effort. It’s taken years to work the bugs of
steering, driving, stopping – but this one’s got the right combination! The
body/chassis are in great shape, but it has been used for the reason it was
built. As such, there are little dings and nicks here and there. This has been
a labor of love, as you can see from the build list and pictures. I’ve treated
her gently and never hammered that V8 through the drive train at full bore, as
a result I’ve never had major breakage and everything has held up well. It is still a 40 year old vehicle and, although well cared for, will require attention from time to time. If you’re looking for a beauty pageant winner, this isn’t
it. However, if you’d like an awesome FJ40 that can go anywhere without the
iconic $100k price tag, then you’ve found it! |

Who sold the most small/midsize pickups in 2012? PickupTrucks.com investigates that, too
Wed, 27 Feb 2013PickupTrucks.com has taken another look at the sales of its favorite vehicle bodystyle as part of an ongoing series. According to registration data from R.L. Polk, the Toyota Tacoma easily took the crown as America's best-selling mid-sized pickup, with 133,477 units rolling into new homes in 2012. For comparison, the second-place Nissan Frontier only saw 50,566 registrations.
We feel compelled to point out that before Ford pulled the plug on its ancient Ranger, the company was moving some 75,000 units per year. That number had shriveled to 15,662 by 2012, which was still enough to surpass the Honda Ridgeline. Interestingly enough, one person brought home a brand-new Hummer H3T as well. But mid-sized trucks represent only a fraction of total pickup sales. Dealers sold a total of 241,471 midsizers last year compared to 988,326 half-tons.
That segment was dominated by General Motors with 533,814 sales followed by Ford at 478,204. Ram Trucks trailed behind in third with 241,204 units with Toyota close behind at 229,769. Nissan, meanwhile, remains a distant fifth. Head over to PickupTrucks.com for a closer look at the breakdown in each segment.
Toyota hydrogen vehicle visits CES, on sale in US in 2015
Mon, Jan 6 2014If there was ever any doubt that Toyota loves hydrogen vehicles, just listen to some of what Bob Carter, senior vice president of automotive operations for Toyota Motor Sales, USA, said today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas: "Fuel cell electric vehicles will be in our future sooner than many people believe, and in much greater numbers than anyone expected." "Hydrogen works beautifully with oxygen to create water and electricity and nothing more." "This [hydrogen] infrastructure thing is going to happen." "I believe what I'm going to tell you about today is going to change our world." Sounds like love is in the air. In all seriousness, Toyota is incredibly bullish on the future of hydrogen as a part of the automotive landscape, and is now gearing up for the 2015 launch of its hydrogen sedan. The concept version of the car was shown for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show last fall and is making its North American debut at CES today, alongside the still-under-camo engineering prototype. The reasons for Toyota's hydrogen confidence? The debut vehicle is supposed to be a "reasonably priced" car that has a range of 300 miles and a refueling time of about five minutes. Carter highlighted the engineering work that Toyota has done over the past decades to get the fuel cell system downsized while upping power output to over 100 kW. He also said the vehicle will have carry enough energy to power a house for a week, so company engineers are working on an export power supply device. The H2 Toyota sedan will start sales in California (the only state in the US where there are currently any hydrogen stations) next year. The automaker is working with the University of California Irvine's Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP) to figure out where to build the next series of public hydrogen fueling stations. Today there are ten, but the model Toyota is using "is based on the assumption that owners want to reach a refueling station within 6-minutes" and shows that 68 stations would be able to serve around 10,000 hydrogen vehicles. 'Toyota Car of the Future' On Sale Next Year; Opens 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Reasonably priced hydrogen fuel cell electric targets 300-mile range, 3-5 minute fill-up LAS VEGAS (Jan. 06, 2014) – "We aren't trying to re-invent the wheel; just everything necessary to make them turn," said Bob Carter, senior vice president of automotive operations for Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.
Toyota finds 10% MPG improvement in hybrid PCU
Wed, May 21 2014Keeping up its from-all-angles approach to efficiency, Toyota has found yet another way to eke out up to ten percent more precious MPGs in its hybrid vehicles, this time electronically. The automaker has announced the development of new silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors for use in power control units, which it will begin testing on Japanese roads within the next year. The PCU using the silicon carbide compound offers less electrical resistance, which improves efficiency when passing current between the battery and electric motor. It also loses less power after shutting off, and can operate at a higher frequency. The net power loss of the new PCU is just one-tenth of the current silicone-only version (the latter accounting for 20 percent of total electrical power loss in today's hybrids). The result, so far, is a claimed five-percent improvement in fuel economy in test vehicles, with the potential of ten percent by the time the new SiC power semiconductor comes to market. Additionally, the carbide wafers allow for smaller a power module, coil and capacitor, thus allowing the entire PCU to be 80 percent smaller (see the side-by-side comparison in the accompanying photo, which you can click to enlarge). We've got a while to wait before we start to see the carbide technology to start making a real-world impact. Toyota aims to begin using the SiC units in 2020. By then, with improvements in the company's other key efficiency factors - engine technology and aerodynamics - cars like the Prius will likely see significant gains in fuel economy. Read more in the press release below. Toyota Develops 'Diamond-like' Computer Chips to Boost Hybrid Mileage May 20, 2014 Toyota City, Japan – Toyota is using one of the hardest materials in nature after diamonds to develop a semiconductor chip it hopes will improve the fuel efficiency of its hybrids, such as the Prius, by as much at 10 percent. The company and its partners announced today that they have developed a silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor for use in automotive power control units. Toyota plans to begin test-driving vehicles with the technology on public roads in Japan within a year. The chips, made from carbide - one of the hardest materials in nature, theoretically have superior characteristics such as one-tenth the electrical power loss and 10 times the drive frequency. Toyota said the chips would also allow it to reduce the size of current automotive power control units by 80 percent.
