NO RESERVE AUCTION!!  High bid wins!

You are viewing my 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser FZJ80.

This is a very, very, very clean CarFax certified, no rust California raised, garaged and well maintained Land Cruiser.

I bought this Cruiser from SoCal where it was garaged its entire life and owned by 3 family members (CarFax shows 4 but it's only 3) most recently the son-in-law.  First with his mother-in-law, then his brother-in-law and then previous owner (son-in-law) got the cruiser with 110k miles.  After a year or so he added a 2.5" OME lift, new BFG All-Terrains 285/75/16 and a rear tire carrier and Yakima Load Bars and Axxis front bumper.

Sorry. No front & rear lockers. Stock center diff lock only when in low range.

The really cool thing is the mother-in-law installed Land Cruiser seats covers, only available overseas, at the time of purchase and the leather seats didn't see the light of day until recently when I brought the cruiser home.   Therefore the seats are almost perfect. I tried to take detailed photos but they are probably better in person than in the photos. Totally awesome.

Only a few small blemishes on the inside, very minor.  All leather near perfect.  Steering wheel leather near perfect as well as gear shift lever.  No fake wood dash here, nice clean look.  Everything works including, the PWR, 2nd gear start, OD buttons, etc.  All power windows works great as do the door locks and sunroof and it doesn't leak. Power seats function flawlessly.  The only issues are the power antenna motor works but the antenna is missing (stock radio still tunes fine and play CD's). The "D" light is burned out and the left side bulb that illuminates the dash is burned out.  The driver side sun visor needs a little help staying in the up position. I use a little clip.  Those are the only issues on the interior of this cruiser.  It's simply nicer than most you've ever seen.

The original paint is in fantastic shape with very few scratches here and there and one small dent in the tailgate (all in photos below).  No accident history or past bodywork.  You might be amazed at the overall condition of this cruiser.  Zero rust.  Stock alloy wheels look great with new OEM center caps.   Tires around 50% tread with brand new spare currently under the truck but can be mounted on the rear tire carrier. Roof rack side rails removed and holes plugged using info from an IH8MUD thread.  Front knuckles/birfields look great. No leaks to speak of and just had new brakes at all four corners and a recent service including oil, lube, filter and a few fluids.  New EGR transducer & temp sensor and catalytic converters at 172k. New rear main seal and crank seal at 159k. Full tune-up including cap, rotor, plugs, wires etc. at 181k. It runs, drives, shifts, brakes just great.  In my opinion it drives better than some cruisers with less miles.  The PHH has been replaced and no HG issues. It really is a pleasure to drive.  Axxis front bumper with winch mount (no winch) which is just a few years old.  Yakima load bars with faring. Receiver hitch.  Maui Toyota license plate frame on front bumper for show. It's never been to Hawaii.

Rear swing out tire carrier included but not currently installed. Full size spare currently mounted under the cruiser in the factory position.

I am selling because I found a Lexus LX 450 all stock with "diff locks" in pretty nice condition.  It was a tough choice to sell this superb cruiser. But I plan to add the OME lift and BFG's to my Lexus but it will never hold a candle to this 80 series.

Ex-Toyota Bill Reinert still in favor of hybrids, against EVs

Mon, Oct 6 2014

Former Toyota executive Bill Reinert is so unsold on electric vehicles as a viable advanced-powertrain option for future transportation that he has praised – gasp – Ford, for its downsized internal combustion engines. Reinert was a key player in developing Toyota's original Prius hybrid and, in an interview published in Yale University's Environment 360 blog, said a hybrid that gets 60 miles per gallon is superior to an electric vehicle. "And that is why you will be seeing more fuel cells in the future." – Bill Reinert Reinert went on to praise the advances that automakers have made in improving fuel economy of fossil fuel vehicles, specifically namechecking Ford and its three-cylinder Ecoboost engine. He also has good things to say about both hydrogen fuel-cell electric technology as well as natural gas vehicles, but admits that limited fueling infrastructure will keep those types of vehicles in the margins for the near future. He also says that hydrogen vehicles aren't that great yet but that, "When most [manufacturers] investigate the two technologies [H2 and EVs], they see that FVCs offer more room for performance improvement and cost reduction potential. And that is why you will be seeing more fuel cells in the future." As far as pure electric, Reinert says lithium-ion batteries have "tremendous shortcomings" and talks about battery degradation, substandard performance in hot weather and, of course, limited single-charge driving range. He also says that people need to factor in the environmental impact of producing electricity for the grid to fully gauge how environmentally beneficial EVs can be. We'd like to take him and Tesla Motors Chief Elon Musk to what we think would be a spirited lunch. You can read the whole interview with Reinert here.

Ford barely edges surging Chrysler for Canadian sales crown in best year ever

Thu, Jan 8 2015

The auto industry in the US showed strong results through much of 2014 with sales regularly growing year-over-year for many brands. That same trend carried over in the Great White North, as well. Canada posted its best numbers ever with 1.85 million units sold, up about 100,000 vehicles over 2013. The country nearly had a new market leader, too. The big winner among our neighbors to the north in 2014 was Ford with 291,951 vehicles sold, up 3 percent from 2013, according to Reuters. That success also handed the company the sales crown for the fifth consecutive year. In large part, the strong result came from the company's popular trucks, which represented about 80 percent of overall sales. "Ford moved into the number one position in September and didn't look back," said a note to clients by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants quoted by Reuters. However, the Blue Oval didn't exactly take an overwhelming lead for the year. The company nearly had to hand over the sales trophy to FCA after the company rallied in the latter part of the year. The Italian-American conglomerate had its best results ever to nip at the Ford's heels and move 290,004 units for 2014, a 12-percent improvement from last year. Jeep especially helped the bottom line with over 50-percent growth, according to Reuters. Only two other brands were able to break the 200,000-vehicle barrier in Canada for 2014. General Motors came in third place overall with 249,800 sales, up 6.3 percent. The combined Toyota and Lexus also barely jumped the hurdle with 200,851 units moved, a 2.8 percent improvement.

Ever wonder how to really pronounce Japanese automaker names?

Thu, 25 Sep 2014

People tend to get very set in their ways when it comes to the pronunciation of words. Just look at the endless debates over whether or not to say the final 'e' in Porsche (which you should in terms of correct German enunciation). Or the argument about whether to follow the British convention and give the 'u' in Jaguar a special delivery or to say the 'ua' diphthong as more of a 'w' sound, as usually happens in the US.
This short video doesn't answer either of those automotive questions, but it does allow a native Japanese speaker to demonstrate the accepted pronunciations for several, major automakers from the country. One benefit is that it clears up the occasional debate over whether Nissan should be said with a long or short 'i' sound. Also, listen closely to how the female host says Mazda as Matsuda, the way it's actually said in the language. Even if this doesn't change the way you enunciate these brands, at least now you know the accurate way in Japanese.
