1991 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER

+++++   CENTER DIFFERENTIAL LOCK   +++++

It's hard to find these old Land Cruisers in this clean and solid condition.  Yes, this one has the highly sought after Center Diff Lock and it works great as it should.  The All-Time 4 Wheel Drive works great and the transmission shifts smooth and strong.  The engine runs great and starts right up with no issues.  It rolls down the highway and around town smooth and straight.  Pictures are worth a thousand words and you can tell by looking at them that this one has been well taken care of and not abused or modified in any way.

Considering it's 23 years old this Cruiser drives and shows like it's much newer.  The exterior still wears the original paint that still shines up very nice and there is NO evidence of paint work or accident damage.  All body panels are straight and all gaps are even.  There's a few small (not noticeable in pictures) paint chips here and there.  I had a brand new windshield installed last week as the original one had some surface pitting and a few stone chips.  Also, I had four new All-Terrain tires installed early last week.  All trim and molding is intact and in great shape.  The wheels are original and have no curb rash and look great.  It has the tow package and is wired for trailer lights.

The interior is far better than what would be expected.  As seen in the photos the carpet is very clean throughout.  The seat upholstery is a 9.5 out of 10 with the only small issues being minimal wear on the outside edge of the drivers seat.   It appears that the back two rows of seats were hardly ever used.  Overall the interior is in fantastic shape with very little sign of wear.  There is seating for 8 people and all seats and seat belts function properly.  All power accessories work, including the door locks, power windows, stereo, cruise control, power antenna, etc…

Again, the pictures show how nice it is.  The miles are really low for the year … it was only driven an average of 9,350 miles per year since 1991.  This will make someone a great everyday driver and family hauler or it's a great foundation for an unstoppable off-road machine.  You can't beat the reliablity and the off-road capability.  It's crazy how "over-engineered" these '90's Land Cruisers really are. They are built like tanks and can take on just about anything you throw at them.  I have owned several over these over the years and have loved every one of them.   I wouldn't hesitate driving this one anywhere or any distance.  The last mid-'90's Land Cruiser I sold had many more miles on it and was purchased and used on a 10,000 mile trek across Europe to Mongolia.  This engine was bone stock and the only modifications were roof mounted spot lights, Old Man Emu 4" suspension lift, and a large aftermarket bumper with a Warn Winch.  These are built for the long haul !!

I chose to sell this on a fixed price sale with a best offer option instead of an auction so that everyone knew upfront where I'm at on price.  I have it priced very fair for what it is and the great condition that it's in.  Please, be fair and reasonable with your offers.  I know what it's worth to me and what I'm into it and I believe a good deal is when both buyer and seller feel good about an agreed price.   I've worked hard to earn and maintain a 100% positive feedback with Ebay and I want to continue with that.  Bottom line, I want both the buyer and myself to come away happy with the transaction and with positive feedback for both sides.

Housekeeping :  As nice as it is it isn't brand new and is being sold As Is with no warranties expressed or implied.  Please have funds in place before bidding.  Please ask any questions you may have before bidding.  Buyer is responsible for all shipping costs and arrangements.  I'm happy to help on my end with whatever is needed to make things go smooth.

While preparing the listing I didn't see where it would allow me to attach the AutoCheck report.  I'll have a copy of it for the buyer.  The report shows -0- Accidents, -0- Title problems, -0- Odometer discrepancies, 4 previous owners, and it qualifies for AutoCheck Buyback Protection.  Of all 15 Title/Problem areas checked by AutoCheck there were -0- problems.  It shows the Cruiser started life in Sacramento, California and was there until 98,000 miles and has been in Montana since that time until recently finding its way to me here in Utah.  I've owned it since January of this year.

Junkyard Gem: 1992 Lexus SC 400

Sat, Dec 18 2021

After Toyota stunned the automotive world with the Lexus LS 400 in 1989, offering a majestically engineered luxury sedan with an all-new DOHC V8 at less than half the cost of its Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL rival, what could be done to follow that (other than a money-printing Lexus-badged Camry, that is)? Clearly, the missing piece of the Lexus branding puzzle at the time was a sports coupe, something to extract the money of car shoppers considering, say, a new Mercedes-Benz 300 CE or Acura Legend coupe. That car turned out to be the Lexus SC, styled in California and known as the third-generation Toyota Soarer in Japan. Here's one of the very first SCs sold in the United States, found in a Denver-area self-service yard last month. These cars had intimidatingly good build quality (I know, because I dismantled a '92 SC 400 down to its smallest components a while back), clearly designed to last at least a quarter-million miles with routine maintenance. This one got hit hard in the right rear, however, and it wasn't worth repairing the damage to a non-SUV pushing three decades of age. Americans could buy a six-cylinder version, the SC 300, which came standard with a five-speed manual transmission (almost all buyers "upgraded" to the automatic, of course). This car is the SC 400, which means it has the same 1UZ-FE V8 engine as the LS 400. That's 250 super-smooth horses and six-bolt main bearing caps keeping the crankshaft from going anywhere it shouldn't. The SC 400 never was available with a manual transmission, nor was its SC 430 successor. This one has the mandatory Aisin-Warner four-speed automatic. This content is hosted by a third party. These cars were very quiet and comfortable and they could cruise all day at triple-digit speeds, but a curb weight pushing 3,600 pounds meant that the SC 400 wasn't going to beat its Porsche 928 rival on a race track. Actually, the 1992 928S4 cost more than twice as much as the 1992 Lexus SC 400 ($80,920 versus $37,500) and had both a more powerful (326hp) V8 and available manual transmission; perhaps the 1992 Cadillac Eldorado Touring Coupe ($32,470, 200hp V8, automatic) was a more realistic sales rival for today's Junkyard Gem.

Mazda-Toyota partnership has us dreaming of a rotary hybrid

Mon, Aug 7 2017

As you may have seen, Mazda and Toyota are going to be working a little more closely with each other. In their announcement, the two companies said they'd be building an American assembly plant together, and working on electric vehicle technology. But one of the companies' goals got our mental gears turning: It's listed as "Expand complementary products," and it's left very open-ended. The companies say they "will further explore the possibilities of other complementary products on a global level." These are in addition to Mazda providing the Mazda2 to Toyota as the Yaris iA, and Toyota providing Mazda a commercial van to sell in Japan. So what could these future complementary products be? We have a couple of ideas, one that's ludicrous but awesome (and, sadly, probably won't ever happen), and the other grounded in reality. Let's start with the fun one. What's the one thing Mazda fan has been wanting for years? A rotary sports car, of course! And while Mazda has repeatedly said that it has a small band of engineers plugging away at the spinning triangle problem, the odds of Mazda putting it into production have been slim. The inherent thirst of the rotary would make it tough to introduce when fuel economy regulations have been tightening. Plus, Mazda is a small company that needs to stretch every dollar, and having a one-off engine not based on anything else would be expensive. How could Mazda get around these obstacles? This is where the partnership with Toyota comes in, in our long-shot fantasy. Aside from having deep pockets, Toyota has a wealth of knowledge in the realm of hybrids. Thus, why not a rotary hybrid? Electrifying their oddball motor would fix two issues. One is obviously the fuel economy, since the gas engine wouldn't have to run all the time. The other is in providing torque. Rotaries infamously have little torque, especially down low, so adding an electric motor would allow this hypothetical rotary sports car to have a grunty low end, while still providing the Everest-high redline rotary fans like. The idea would be sweetened with the solid-state batteries that Toyota is developing, which could provide lots of electricity without weighing a ton. The rotary-electric mashup notion isn't totally alien to Mazda, either, since the company created an electric Mazda2 with a rotary engine for a range extender — albeit for different reasons. The company even filed a patent for the rotary range extender recently.

Crushing 1984 Ford Ranger to make a point about clean cars

Fri, May 29 2015

Being a professional politician is often about more than just getting legislation passed, and a little showmanship can go a long way towards getting a point across. California State Senate leader Kevin de Leon recently staged just such a flashy stunt when he crushed a 1984 Ford Ranger at a rally kicking off an EV incentives pilot program. De Leon sponsored a bill last year that, in part, tried to give greater support to low-income buyers who wanted to trade in their old clunker for a zero-emissions vehicle. He hoped to improve the state's Clean Vehicle Rebate Project, which has been accused of especially helping the wealthy. After watching their Ranger get destroyed at this event, the Mendoza family that owned the truck drove away in a 2013 Toyota Prius, according to the Sacramento Business Journal. Under the pilot program, buyers in two air districts in the Golden State can take advantage of these incentives. Depending on their income and the vehicle they are purchasing, people can get a rebate of between $1,500 and $9,500, according to the Sacramento Business Journal. For now, the California Air Resources Board has set aside $5 million from the state's cap-and-trade program to fund things in these areas. Later, it will vote whether to adopt the initiative statewide. Not to be outdone, Arnold Schwarzenegger has thrown his prodigious muscle behind this program, and he put out an even more explosive video showing how to get rid of these old vehicles. You can watch a clip of the Ranger's destruction from the Sacramento Business Journal above and the Governator's response, below. This content is hosted by a third party.
