The Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series I am a dealer of classic and collectible cars as well as a life-long 4x4 enthusiast. After meeting a Japanese vehicle exporter through a mutual friend, I became an importer of rare and unique 4x4's. I specialize in Toyota Land Cruisers and other Toyota 4x4's. I imported this rust-free, low-mileage BJ74 in December of last year. It is 100% legal to own and drive in all 50 states. Outside of the US, the Land Cruiser 70 series is a legendary vehicle platform well-known for offroad capability and unmatched reliability and durability. Now that these vehicles are past the 25-year-old limit, we can enjoy them here in the states. eBay requires a 17-digit VIN in the listing, the actual VIN for this BJ74 is BJ740000955. It was produced for the Japanese Domestic Market and does not have a 17-digit VIN. The original VIN plate reading BJ740000955 is still fixed in the factory location on the engine firewall. The Missouri title and customs documentation all match this VIN.

Rust-Free, Original Condition This BJ74 is a rust-free and well-maintained vehicle. The photos show the condition and tell the story. The body has a few small paint chips as might be expected from a 28-year old vehicle. Also, the paint is slightly faded on the upper fenders. The hood was repainted at some point, likely it was faded as well. The complete vehicle is in excellent condition. There is zero rust on the entire body. The interior is very clean, and the undercarriage is also very clean and unmolested. The mechanical condition is excellent as well. Everything on this BJ74 works. The gauges in the clinometer pod all function. The radio is an aftermarket 12 volt AM/FM/Cassette (Japanese band) powered by a 24v-12v converter mounted on the driver kick panel. This converter can also be used to power 12 volt accessories like a CB radio or other add-ons. The A/C system wasn't functioning, and I had it converted to R134a at a professional automotive Heat/AC service shop. The winch works properly, and comes with the original plug-in controller. Even the original toolkit and jack are included. This BJ74 arrived with aftermarket lift shackles that add about 2" to the suspension height of the vehicle. This BJ74 is loaded with options including:
The 13B-T turbo-diesel engine works flawlessly, and you can expect to get 20-25 MPG during normal driving. The automatic transmission passed all service inspections, and shifts smoothly. The differentials and transfer case had clean fluid, free of any indication of problems. See the full list of everything inspected and serviced in the section below. This BJ74 is a great vehicle for driving around town or on the highway. The adjustable suspension seats make the ride very comfortable. This BJ74 has only 96,582 original miles! That's 155,497 KMs.

Here's a list of what I've done to this BJ74 since it was imported in December of 2013:
This represents the basic service I do to all vehicles I import.
Owning a Right-Hand-Drive Import First, this is a 100% legal and documented import vehicle. I have copies of all the customs, EPA, DOT and import paperwork that go with the vehicle to the new owner. This BJ74 has been titled in Missouri, and can be legally titled and driven in all 50 states. Replacement parts and accessories are generally available to ensure a long life of service. Driving a right-hand-drive vehicle is not nearly as difficult as it might first appear. After a few minutes, any driver can become comfortable with driving "on the wrong side." The uniqueness of this setup starts conversations and turns heads everywhere you go.

Japanese automakers welcome North American trade deal, fear what's next
Tue, Oct 2 2018TOKYO — Toyota, Nissan and Mazda welcomed on Tuesday the revised North America trade deal that left Japanese automakers unscathed, but they may face a bumpy ride when Washington and Tokyo hold new talks on over $40 billion of annual U.S. auto imports from Japan. The United States and Canada reached an agreement on Sunday to update the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement after Washington had forged a separate trade deal with Mexico in August. The updated deal effectively maintains the auto industry's current footprint in North America, and spares Canada and Mexico from the prospect of U.S. national security tariffs on their vehicles. Mazda, which ships cars to the United States from Mexico and Japan, called the deal a "big step forward". Nissan, which makes the cars it sells in the United States locally as well as in Mexico, Japan and other countries, said it was "encouraged" by the agreement. Toyota, Japan's biggest automaker, said it was "pleased" that a basic deal was reached. Other automakers were not immediately available for comment. While the deal has removed the risk that the disintegration of the pact would have posed to automakers, bigger risks loom large for Japanese firms as a chunk of the roughly 7 million cars they sold in the U.S. last year were shipped from Japan, and a trade deal between Washington and Tokyo has yet to be agreed. The United States and Japan last week agreed to begin fresh trade talks, with U.S. President Donald Trump seeking to address Japan's $69 billion trade surplus, of which nearly two-thirds comes from auto exports. Washington is also investigating the possibility of slapping 25 percent tariffs on auto imports on national security grounds, although it has agreed with Japan to put any new tariffs on hold during the talks. Analysts say the United States may take a tougher stance on auto imports from Japan than from its neighbors. "If Japan requests an exemption from the 25 percent tariffs under consideration, Washington could propose a more strict cap on imports than it agreed to with Mexico and Canada," said Koji Endo, senior analyst at SBI Securities. "That would be a risk." This could be a big blow to Japan, as the United States is a key source of revenue for Japanese automakers including Toyota, Nissan and Honda. The U.S. market accounts for a quarter or more of their annual global vehicle sales, and of their total U.S.
Automakers' sound systems: Crank it, don't yank it
Thu, Jun 21 2018Years ago, one of the first things most music lovers did after buying a new vehicle was drive to an aftermarket stereo shop to get the crappy stock components swapped for better gear. And you'd typically get not only better sound but also more bang (and boom) for your buck. But in the past decade or so, the overall quality of OEM audio has dramatically increased, while car electronics became more complex, removing the incentive for most new vehicle owners — and all but the most hardcore DIYer — to start from scratch. In 2010, I did a comparison of the average costs for OEM electronics vs. similar offerings from the aftermarket, and back then automakers' stock premium systems were by far the best bargain — and are probably an even better value now. The premium 14-speaker, 1,200-watt JBL system in the all-new 2019 Toyota Avalon is a prime example of this trend. It's standard on the top two Limited and Touring trims and is available as a $680 audio upgrade on the XLE and XSE. I doubt you can even buy 14 speakers and 1,200 watts of amplification from the aftermarket for 700 bucks, much less have it all installed. And because the system is bundled with Toyota's Entune infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and a surround-view camera, removing the head unit means you would likely lose these features. Another advantage of OEMs and their audio partners is they can design the car around the audio system. In the past, automakers would typically place speakers where convenient for packaging, not for optimal sound reproduction, and audio engineers were forced to compromise. But as with the Avalon's premium JBL audio system, this is starting to change. At a recent behind-the-scenes peek for media into the process of developing the system, Toyota and Harman engineers delved into the minutia of sealing the inner panel of the front doors to create an enclosure for 6x8-inch woofers, making space in the pillars for JBL horn tweeters and extensively measuring the acoustic properties of the interior to tune the sound to the space. I'm met some creative and skilled car stereo installers, but none with a degree in psychoacoustics. The system is also the first to feature Quantum Logic Surround that creates a multi-channel listening experience from two-channel sources. And it includes Harman's Clari-Fi processing that "rebuilds key details lost" in compressed audio formats used by streaming music services and MP3s.
Toyota Sienna Swagger Wagon rides again with Busta Rhymes
Mon, 04 Aug 2014Let's face it: there are few things less "gangsta" than a minivan (which goes a long way towards explaining why crossovers have been gradually taking their place as the family-hauler of choice across America, but we digress). The point here is not lost on Toyota, which has embraced the uncool image of the minivan with the Swagger Wagon campaign.
We first saw the suburban-goes-urban campaign pop up with the introduction of the new Sienna back in 2010. And now that the Sienna's been updated for 2015, the campaign is back again, featuring none other than Trevor Tahiem Smith, Jr. himself... better known to most as Busta Rhymes. The decidedly white-bread video spot that follows may make you cringe, but you've got to admit that it's well done, even if it doesn't have the charm and freshness of the original.
