Up for sale is my 1979 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser, as you know the 79 and newer FJ’s are more desirable. To top it off this one has factory power steering and factory air condition as well. Overall it is in good shape and drives/stops straight. I would not hesitate to drive it on a long trip but as we all know, it would get a little uncomfortable after a few hundred miles! I will do my best to describe it; however, if you have more questions or would like specific pictures please let me know and I will do my best to answer quickly and accurately.
History: I bought this FJ40 in September of 2006 from a local individual. If I recall, he inherited from his father or father in-law who used it to tow behind their RV (if you look, it has built in hitch receivers in the in the front bumper where the two bar goes and yes, I still have the tow bar and it is included in the sale). His father/father in-law bought it from a local dealership (used) prior to that. I do not know any other history.
Engine and drive train: Factory 2F engine and factory 4 speed transmission, I was told when I bought it that the mileage was roughly 1xx,xxx it now has 162,658 miles. It starts right up, runs great and has no issues that I can tell. It does not leak or burn oil that I can see (as there are no drips or puddles under it where it parks) but there may be some small ones that I do not see. It recently sat for roughly 6-8 months with occasional starts and I did notice that the power steering fluid was a little low so I added a touch. I just give it a tune up and fresh fuel filter. The tires are a few years old but have about 90%+ tread. Over that past few weeks, I have driven the FJ roughly 100 miles with no issues, it has been enjoyable to drive as it drives and stops straight at any speed.
Interior: The interior is in decent shape, the front seats are ripping at the seams so I bought new high quality seat covers (cost me about $350) but have not installed them. The front vinyl floor mat has a hole on the drivers side(shown in the pictures). I do have the rear jump seats (also shown in pictures) and seat belts. All lights, gauges, etc work. The emergency brake light, the seat belt light and buzzer still work! The FJ has factory A/C that is complete and turns on; however, there are two hoses (I have them) but they are not hooked up so the condition of the compressor is unknown but it turns and still has the belt on it.
Body and Rust: As you can see the FJ is in decent shape, if you need more detailed/specific pictures please ask. I tried to capture the overall condition but I was limited to 24 pictures. The paint is decent, thin in spots (worst shown is on the driver’s side fenders and passenger door see pictures) besides that the paint is ok. There is surface rust on the bottom of each door, not bad in my mind but I included pictures so you can be the judge. There is also surface rust on the back barn doors, also not bad in my mind but once again I included pictures. There is some surface rust under the hood also not bad in my mind (see pictures). The worst of the rust (not surface rust, this is actual rust rust) is on the rear panels this will need to be repaired (see pictures). The body has some dings/ dents but overall, it’s fairly straight.
Extras: As you can see I do have some extras that I will include with this auction which cost me roughly $1,000: Seat Covers $350 Factory OME Turn Signals $150 Factor OME Rear Lights $125 Factory OME Emblems - $200 Factory OME Hubcaps $100 Factory OME Windshield Gasket $60
I do have a few other items that I will sell separately to the buyer of the FJ40 for an additional cost (these items are NOT included in the auction), I listed what it cost me but I will sell at a discounted rate, especially if you buy all three items. Brand New ARB Bull Bumper, cost me $700 Brand New Shackle Reversal Kit, cost me $200 Brand New (well I removed it from the box and mounted it) Warn 8274-50 Winch and Hanson Winch Mount, Cost me $2100
If you have any questions, once again, please don't hesitate to ask, if you are local and would like to take a look or drive it I strongly encourage you to do so. It drives at freeway speeds with one finger on the wheel, it drives straight, stops straight and easy to turn due to the power steering. Although this vehicle is in good shape it is 34+ years old. I would not hesitate to have my wife and kids drive this FJ anywhere. It has never let us down or gave us any issues. I have owned three other FJ40's (69, 78 & 81), I have owned two FJ45's so I am familiar with them. This one to me is in decent shape but I will let you be the judge of that. If you need more pictures, please let me know.
Thank you for looking and happy bidding!

2013 Toyota RAV4 earns 'poor' rating in IIHS small overlap crash test [w/video]
Thu, 11 Jul 2013When the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tested a batch of SUVs in its small overlap frontal crash test earlier this year, it held off on putting the Toyota RAV4 in the blender because the new, 2013 model was due to arrive shortly after the test. The new crossover might be better than it was before, but it could still only manage a rating of "Poor" in the test that has been a bugbear for a number of manufacturers.
Among other issues, the IIHS noted that the steering column moved seven inches to the right causing the crash test dummy to practically miss the airbag, the dummy's left foot was trapped in deformed sheetmetal and the dummy's head hit the instrument panel.
The 2013 RAV4 earned the Top Safety Pick rating by scoring well in the Institute's four other tests. A good score in this particular test would have earned it the Top Safety Pick+ rating that is so far only claimed by the 2014 Subaru Forester and 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport in the SUV category. There's a press release below with more details and a video of the test.
Toyota promises Hybrid-R concept for Frankfurt
Thu, 08 Aug 2013Toyota will be bringing a new concept car to the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. Dubbed Hybrid-R, Toyota says the concept will feature the same Toyota Hybrid System-Racing tech found in the automaker's latest endurance car, the TS030 Hybrid.
That car took second place at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a gas-powered, 3.4-liter, naturally aspirated V8 and a capacitor-based hybrid system. The result was 530 ponies from the engine and an extra 300 horsepower from the electric motor and batteries.
Toyota's press release came with but one image, a new Hybrid badge which is a far cry from the Hybrid Synergy Drive label found on the automaker's other offerings. There's really not much else to go on yet, but the news that Toyota is already adapting its racing tech for a concept bodes well for the future of exciting, hybridized offerings from the automaker. We'll be at Frankfurt live, and will be sure to bring you all the news on this new concept as it becomes available.
Car and Driver shows off awesome 1960s ads
Fri, Sep 11 2015Someone must have recently rediscovered the keys to the archives at Car and Driver, and the access has been put to good use. Following last month's fantastic look at automotive ads from the '50s, there's now a new gallery running from March 1960 through December 1969. This collection provides a great overview of a decade full of iconic cars. If you're a fan of Carroll Shelby, particularly his Mustangs, then there's a lot to love among this group. One ad from July 1965 aimed to sell the GT350, but with an ocean of text and a tiny picture, it probably could've used a once-over by Don Draper's team. By December '65, the copywriters ironed out the problems with a spot proclaiming boldly "Shelby GT350 is 'Son of Cobra.'" The company offered some great accessories, too. For those into European motoring, there's a humorous attempt to sell the Alfa Romeo Giulia as both a racecar and family hauler. Toyota also boasts about the winning record for the 2000GT. Among the best text comes from BMW for lines like: "What's BMW got? The most advanced high-performance engine in any production car, for a cruising speed of 100 mph." Of course, Volkswagen's famous "Lemon" ad for the Beetle also gets its due here. Separately, each of these ads is fascinating, but taken together they tell the story of a great decade of motoring. Go give them all a read at Car and Driver.
