1978 Toyota FJ 40 Landcruiser

Frame on restored in 2008-09 by wealthy Montana car collector as a driver on his ranch. I bought from Legendary Motor Cars in Ontario, internationally known classic and performance car dealer. It was pretty well sorted by them, but I’ve spent nearly $6,000 with ACC Landcruiser  here in Atlanta getting it mechanically right. This truck is a perfect, awesome, head-turning driver. It’s not a mint trailer queen. I’ll go into further detail below. I can also email pictures from previous owner going back to the before, during and after restoration.

High level overview:

  • Original, numbers matching drivetrain

  • 92,000 original miles

  • Excellent, original interior

  • Was painted during on-frame restoration (some pics attached) prior to my purchase; paint job wasn’t to my standard, and there are three small bubbles that have appeared (pics included); I am a collector of other vintage cars, mostly early 911s and to me you cannot cut corners on paint. I suppose since it was a driver on a ranch, he wasn’t as concerned. If you are interested in a perfect mechanical truck that you could strip to metal and repaint, then this competes with any of the trucks selling for $70,000+ at the auctions right now. So it’s a great investment truck (right miles, right mechanicals, originality, etc.).

  • Dry, dry, dry underneath. Not a spot on the garage floor. I've spent $5,600 in the last 8 months completely sorting the mechanicals on this truck. I often take my children for weekend rides in my classic cars and insist on total reliability (as best as you can with the classics), and spend what it takes to make them right.

  • The frame and underside was coated at some point with an aftermarket solution it appears, and there are a few small areas where it has peeled away.

  • Brand new BFG Mud Terrain 33's. really improved the drive and noise over the previous tire. Look really beefy on stock wheels.

  • Has a Pioneer CD/MP3 player with 4 speakers (previously installed). Nice radio.

  • Rear heater

  • Vintage Ramsey winch which works great and looks great up front

  • Conn-Fer roof rack with axe, shovel, high jack, painted/mounted accessory box. I also have two sand colored jerry cans, one for water and one for gas that are included. Each has a holder mounted on the roof rack. I take them off to get in/out of garage.

  • Custom storage shelf mounted inside overhead

  • Most of original tool kit in place, including jack

  • New FJ60 gear reduction starter

  • New Clutch master and slave cylinders

  • New output seals on T-case and PTO

  • All fluids changed

  • Powder coated valve cover, air cleaner, clutch cover and oil pan

  • Just readjusted carb to perform correctly

Current issues:

  • As mentioned above, the paint has a few smaller issues in places (detailed in pics), but looks excellent from any distance. A buyer has a choice of keeping this as an incredible driver to enjoy or do a repaint and turn this truck into collection truck for investment purposes. I have detailed all of the exterior issues in the pictures, but feel free to ask questions or come see it if in the Atlanta, GA are.
  • I also just realized in taking the pics that the headliner is starting to pull away in a rear corner.

This truck is well known in the Atlanta area among enthusiasts, and I’ve turned down a number of past offers before I decided to sell. It is listed locally and I reserve the right to end the auction early. Title in hand.

I would not hesitate to get in this truck and drive it anywhere, assuming I had all day to get there and the weather was pleasant (not hot):) All paperwork from recent work included. I am offering this truck for exactly what I have in it.

Impala crashes into Land Cruiser... to hide from a cheetah

Fri, 12 Jul 2013

What would you do if a wild animal jumped into your vehicle through an open window during an African safari? What if said animal was an impala being chased by cheetahs? Though the scenario seems unbelievable, that's just what happened to a group of tourists in Kruger National Park in South Africa, and it was all caught on video.
With the tour groups stopped, a motorist with a video camera handy happens to catch the unlikely sight of a herd of impalas (not that kind of Impala) jumping over the tarmac while being followed, quickly of course, by two cheetahs. The feline predators thought they had cornered one impala and were closing in for the kill when it jumped through the open window of a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado - South Africa's version of the Lexus GX. Fortunately for the occupants of said vehicle, the cheetahs did not follow.
A short while later, one of the occupants in the Toyota fearlessly opens a door to let the poor animal out. It must have been its lucky day, because the cheetahs didn't take pursuit. Check out the circle life get interrupted by this traffic jam in the video below.

NHTSA urges owners of recalled Takata airbag vehicles to take immediate action

Mon, 20 Oct 2014

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Department of Transportation are taking the unusual step of issuing a followup press release urging owners of certain recalled vehicles "to act immediately" to fix their cars and trucks. The problem in question concerns the repair campaigns for rupturing Takata airbag inflators issued in June and covers a long list of models from Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Infiniti, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile and Pontiac.
While NHSTA doesn't specifically say why the recall is vital in the new release, Toyota's own explanation in its newly announced renotification campaign earlier today sheds some new light on the topic. According to the Japanese automaker, in testing, Takata found a possible link between the rupturing airbag inflators and high humidity. NHTSA is advocating that all owners pursue repairs immediately if they haven't already done so already. This is especially crucial for those drivers especially in Florida, Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and Hawaii because of the humid conditions there.
We don't need to tell you how dangerous an inadvertent airbag deployment could be - even in a stationary vehicle - but adding to the Takata issue is fears that the deployment could lead to shrapnel being sprayed into the cabin.

NHTSA opens safety investigations into Toyota, GM and Honda crossovers

Fri, 08 Jun 2012

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is evidently keeping itself very busy these days, as the federal agency has just announced it is launching or renewing investigations into Toyota, Honda and General Motors crossovers.
2006-2008 model year Toyota RAV4 crossovers are under review for allegations of rear tie-rod rust which can result in failure. NHTSA also said it is probing some 35 complaints about 2005 Honda Pilot models with inappropriate activation of the vehicles' stability control system. The alleged malfunction can cause the vehicles to slow down or stop in bad unsafe situations. At the moment, NHTSA is reviewing a petition regarding the Pilot issue, a move that will determine whether it needs to open a full-blown investigation.
In addition, Saturn Outlook and GMC Acadia three-row crossovers built in 2007-2009 are getting looked at for "loss of low beam headlamp" function. One complainant said the wiring in his Outlook overheated and melted. NHTSA says it has received 415 complaints about the problem and a GM spokesman confirmed that the automaker already started a "Customer Satisfaction Program" in December to address the issue.
