You are bidding on a 1978 Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser that has had some restoration done to it.  The previous owner kept the vehicle garaged in Midlothian, VA and was only used as a fun weekend vehicle.  The paint job speaks for itself in the pictures.  No rust.  There is some fading on the roof and some very small, minor chips/scratches but overall it is in great condition.  The previous owner also made the conversion to a Chevy 350 V8 engine, 4 speed transmission.  Starts and runs with no problems.  Additional features:  Mud King XT 32 x 11.5R x 15 LTM+S Tires, full custom roll bars, seats are original leather and are in excellent condition,  Hella Fog Lamps (wiring still needs to be completed), upgraded metal brake lines, full Rhino undercoating, new muffler, tailpipe, battery, and car cover.  The rear quarter panel of glass was fixed with Lexan DIY but should be an easy replacement for less than $50.  Fuel gauge is stuck (unsure if it's the gauge or transmitter).  Air conditioning does not work.  Heater does.  Radio works but an antenna needs to be installed.  The front tires rub against the roll cage if you take a turn to tight or fast.  It could use a 1-2" lift.  Folding ambulance style seats in the rear.  This vehicle is in good running condition and needs just a little more love to get it fully restored.  Most of the restoration items are minor things.  The only reason I am selling is because I am in the Navy and stationed in Hawaii.  The vehicle is in Virginia with my parents.  I haven't had much opportunity to drive it or spend restoring it.  I had to buy another vehicle here in Hawaii recently when my daily driver died.  I'd love to keep it but I just don't have the time to put into it right now and want to find a good home with someone who does have the time and money.   The vehicle needs to be seen to be appreciated.  It's a head turner and I got stopped whenever I made a run to the store or at a stoplight with people complimenting or asking about it.

Evo pits Toyota GT86 vs. Mazda MX-5 Miata

Tue, Sep 8 2015

The latest Deadly Rivals episode from Evo gets the Mazda MX-5 Miata and Toyota GT86 (our Scion FR-S) on track for a shakedown and a whole lot of drifting with Dan Prosser behind the wheel. The UK-spec coupes have slightly different power ratings than ours, but it's all close enough to be comparable. Their Miata has 158 horsepower (ours has 155), 148 pound-feet of torque, takes 7.3 seconds to run from naught to 60 62, and costs 22,695 pounds. The GT86, on the other hand, lists a 7.6-second dash to 60 62, and a base price of 25,000 pounds. The GT86 also weighs 400 pounds more than the Mazda. That's true in the States, too – curb weight for our MX-5 is 2,332 pounds, whereas the Scion FR-S comes in at 2,758 pounds. Both cars lauded for excellent shifting, but one of them has a better front end, a sweeter engine note, more controllable cornering behavior, and is faster by a tenth of a second around the test track. And Prosser doesn't mention it, but one has a lot more body roll. But it takes more than all that to make a winner, so check out the video above to see which is which. Toyota expects hybrids will soon reach 20-percent sales volume globally

Wed, 12 Mar 2014

Hybrids have come quite a long way from their roots as dull, slow, boring ecomobiles. Today, Porsche sells three hybrid models, one of which is the amazing 918 Spyder. BMW will soon sell four, including a low-slung, two-seat sports car. Even Ferrari and McLaren, full-fledged hypercar manufacturers, are embracing the tech. And all of these cars are sold alongside the same sort of boring cars that popularized hybrids in the first place. According to Toyota Chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada, though, we should see an even bigger increase in the number of hybrid vehicles in the coming years.
"I foresee hybrid models pretty soon reaching 20 percent of global sales from about 13 percent to 14 percent now," Uchiyamada-san told Automotive News. Uchiyamada is the man behind the original Prius, which gives him some degree of authority on making predictions about hybrid adoption.
What's remarkable, though, is that the 20-percent figure doesn't include plug-in hybrids, just gas- and diesel-electric models. "Suppliers need higher volumes to slash costs of components specific to plug-in models, including batteries that should be bigger and more capable than the ones used in traditional hybrids," Uchiyamada told AN.

Edmunds ranks the best used cars for 2013

Sun, 15 Sep 2013

When people ask us what car we would recommend for them, it's usually not easy to answer. To make a useful recommendation we must consider which of the numerous vehicle segments fits their needs best, and then choose one of the many vehicles offered in each segment. For some people, new cars don't meet their expectations of value, because they lose so much of it the moment they are purchased and driven off the dealer lot. For them, there's always the used-car market, where great deals can be found, but cars' histories of reliability and maintenance records - and perhaps that Certified Pre-Owned warranty - become ever-important factors playing into purchase choice.
To help out, Edmunds has done us the favor of assembling a list of the best used vehicles money can buy, covering model years 2006-2011, according to what it considers the most important criteria when shopping for used autos: reliability, safety, value and availability. That means unreliable, unsafe, super-expensive or limited-edition models don't appear on the list, but instead cars from each segment that are more likely to satisfy the general population.
There are some real goodies on the list, including but not limited to vehicles such as the capable Honda Fit, the cultish Honda Accord coupe (which can be had with a 240-horsepower V6 and a six-speed manual transmission some years), and the powerful Chevrolet Corvette. While Edmunds' choice of the Volvo C70 for best used convertible baffled us at first (not that it's a bad car), it redeemed itself by stating that the Mazda MX-5 still is an unofficial top choice if you don't require more than two seats.
