71k DOCUMENTED MILES!!!!
1978 Toyota FJ40.....VERY Nice Original Condition. Its origin may be PA, but it was pampered and garaged(never
excessively driven in the rain or snow).
Here is the story:
1st owner-This vehicle was purchased new by a gentleman by the name of Edward Shaffner on April 28,1978 from L.A.
Hammaker Toyota in Harrisburg, PA. The original window sticker is included (it was sold undercoated and remained
undercoated its entire life).
Mr. Shaffner kept record of everything he had done to the vehicle, with all receipts nicely kept in a binder. He
kept a record from 05/20/78 when he added an 8-track stereo and speakers at 53 miles, up until 12/14/07 when the
vehicle had 65253 miles on it. There are numerous receipts throughout Mr Shaffner’s ownership including a clutch
replacement, engine oil seals/gaskets at 51,201 miles on 7/29/963rd owner-James Day (PA State Trooper)purchased the vehicle in August 2011 with 68120 miles on the vehicle. He
installed a 2 1/2" Black Diamond suspension lift and shackles from Cool Cruiser of Texas. He also installed 33" BF
Goodrich tires on aluminum Outlaw II wheels.
During Mr Day’s ownership, there was a minor incident of paint splash when a can fell of a truck on the highway.
The vehicle was taken to a professional detailer and all the paint was removed, however; there was a spot on the
right rocker panel where the paint needed to be fixed. The FJ was taken to Yancey's in Lebanon, PA and the right
rocker and side step were repainted professionally.
4th owner-I purchased the FJ from Mr Day in July 2014 with 70,584 miles, and had it professionally shipped to my
home in CA. Upon receiving the vehicle, I inspected it from top to bottom and purchased numerous parts (Toyota,
Cool Cruisers and Specter). I have brought the vehicle up to a high standard without changing its originality,
character or integrity; below is a list:
-oil changes in engine, transfer case, transmission, differentials and steering box, and flushed the entire cooling
system
-CA emissions testing (passed with certification on the 1st test)
-complete major tune-up: 1-plugs and wires; 2-distributor rotor and cap; 3-pcv valve; 4-air filter; 5-fuel filter;
6-valve adjustment
-replaced all engine compartment cooling system hoses(heater, bypass, upper/lower radiator hoses) and heater pipe
-replaced thermostat
-new 4 core radiator with factory specifications(brass tanks, mounting bolts, and neck)
-replaced radiator cap
-new brakes on all 4 wheels, including upgrading the rears to discs (new front and rear calipers, master cylinder
and rear lines) and flushed the entire system
-new headliner
-powder coated: 1-grill; 2-radiator support; 3-air cleaner; 4-lower access/inspection shields; 5-valve cover;
6-thermostat housing; 7-front bumper; 8-rear bumperettes
-new Toyota OEM battery 84month (Oct 2014)
-plated the fan shroud with the proper gold zinc finish
-new seals on the hardtop(disassembled completely and replaced EVERY seal)
-new steering stabilizer(HFS)
-powder coated the original wheels to the original color with new 33” tires
The work I have performed was focused on using high quality OEM or exact parts, without changing the FJ from
“stock”. I have really enjoyed bringing the FJ up to a higher standard than what I found it in. When doing
all the work (including replacing the radiator and converting the rear brakes to disc), I NEVER ran into a frozen
or rusted bolt or screw, or other headaches. This FJ has great integrity and is absolutely original (every panel
has their original spot weld dents, the floors, sheet metal, frame, engine/transmission and under hood components
are original). This FJ doesn’t have dents or marks on the seat backs or dash, every electrical item works as it
did new and retains all its original emission’s controls…even the original keys! This is an absolutely
beautifully preserved and honest FJ.
Because the next fortunate owner will appreciate the unmolested and original condition of this FJ, I chose to limit
the restoration, and there is a short list of items that should be done in the future to ensure the vehicle’s
condition:
-small ding from the underside on the right front fender
-2 small areas of rust at the rear sill where it meets the quarter panels
-driver’s seat bottom cushion is torn at the stitching

Massive Airbag Recall Affects Seven Automakers
Mon, Jun 23 2014The recall of faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata has exploded today to grow to seven automakers. In most cases, only models in certain high-humidity regions were affected because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found in its investigation that moisture played a role in determining whether there would be a problem. However, some companies opted for national campaigns. The exact number of affected models for these campaigns isn't yet known at this time. BMW is recalling an undisclosed number of 325i, 325Xi, 330i and 330Xi models from the 2001 through 2005 model years and the 2001-2006 model year versions of the 325Ci and 330Ci for the driver side and passenger side inflators. Only vehicles currently registered in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands are covered under this recall. Neither Chrysler's filing with NHTSA nor its press release list the specific models affected, but a company spokesperson told Autoblog that at this time it only covers the driver and passenger side inflators for the 2006 Dodge Charger in Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands In most cases, only models in certain high-humidity regions were affected because the NHTSA found that moisture played a roll in determining if there would be a problem. Ford is recalling an estimated 58,669 cars that include the 2005-2006 model years of the Ford GT for the driver and passenger inflators, the 2007-2007 model years of the Mustang for the driver side and 2004 Ranger for the passenger side. It covers vehicles originally sold or currently registered in, wait for it... Florida, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands. Honda is issuing three separate recalls regarding the problem. First, the company is recalling the 2002-2003 model years Civic, CR-V and Odyssey and the 2003 model year of the Accord, Element, Pilot and Acura MDX to replace the passenger's side inflator. This covers all models nationwide. Second, Honda is repairing the passenger's side airbag inflator in the 2003-2005 Accord, Civic, CR-V, Element, Pilot, the 2003-2004 model year versions of the Odyssey, the 2003-2005 model year Acura MDX and 2005 Acura RL. However, only for vehicles located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Owners will be notified in July. Finally, Honda is separately replacing some models' driver's side inflators.
What would you drive in 1985?
Wed, May 6 2020Bereft of live baseball games to watch, I've turned to the good ship YouTube to watch classic games. While watching the 1985 American League Championship Series last night, several of the broadcast's commercials made its way into the original VHS recording, including those for cars. "Only 8.8% financing on a 1985 Ford Tempo!" What a deal! That got me thinking: what would I drive in 1985? It sure wouldn't be a Tempo. Or an IROC-Z, for that matter, despite what my Photoshopped 1980s self would indicate in the picture above. I posed this question to my fellow Autobloggists. Only one could actually drive back then, I was only 2 and a few editors weren't even close to being born. Here are our choices, which were simply made with the edict of "Come on, man, be realistic." West Coast Editor James Riswick: OK, I started this, I'll go first. I like coupes today, so I'm pretty sure I'd drive one back then. I definitely don't see myself driving some badge-engineered GM thing from 1985, and although a Honda Prelude has a certain appeal, I must admit that something European would likely be in order. A BMW maybe? No, I'm too much a contrarian for that. The answer is therefore a 1985 Saab 900 Turbo 3-Door, which is not only a coupe but a hatchback, too. If I could scrounge up enough Reagan-era bucks for the ultra-cool SPG model, that would be rad. The 900 Turbo pictured, which was for auction on Bring a Trailer a few years ago, came with plum-colored Bokhara Red, and you're damn sure I would've had me one of those. Nevermind 1985, I'd probably drive this thing today.  Associate Editor Byron Hurd: I'm going to go with the 1985.5 Ford Mustang SVO, AKA the turbocharged Fox Body that everybody remembers but nobody drives. The mid-year update to the SVO bumped the power up from 175 ponies (yeah, yeah) to 205, making it almost as powerful (on paper, anyway) as the V8-powered GT models offered in the same time frame. I chose this particular car because it's a bit of a time capsule and, simultaneously, a reminder that all things are cyclical. Here we are, 35 years later, and 2.3-liter turbocharged Mustangs are a thing again. Who would have guessed?
Japan plans real-world diesel emissions test after companies fail
Fri, Mar 4 2016Japan's transport ministry plans to start real-world diesel emissions tests after an experiment found four models from Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi that produced more nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions than the nation's rules allow, according to The Japan Times. Regulators there usually only perform emissions checks in the lab. The VW diesel scandal has everyone double-checking their figures. Diesel versions of the Toyota Hiace van, Land Cruiser Prado, and Nissan X-Trail produced up to 10 times more NOx than allowed. The Mitsubishi Delica D:5 was up to five times over the limit, The Wall Street Journal reports. There was no evidence of defeat devices in the vehicles. Mazda performed well in the experiment, though. The CX-5 passed with nearly the same results on the road and in the lab. The Demio, better known as the Mazda2, did nearly as well with only slighter higher figures in the real world than in the controlled setting. The experimenters theorized the reason for the excessive emissions was that cold weather caused the engines' software to shut off the exhaust gas recirculation to prevent damage, according to the WSJ. However, this behavior also increased NOx production. Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi don't have to worry about punishment from the transport ministry because this check was just an experiment. Their models already passed the mandated lab tests, which was the only requirement, according to The Japan Times. As governments begin greater real-world emissions tests, the results suggests diesels aren't very clean. A recent check in France found models from Ford, Renault, and Mercedes-Benz that didn't perform up to the standards. Regulators in India conducted similar evaluations and ordered VW to recall over 300,000 vehicles. Related Video:
