This 1978 FJ40 Toyota Land Cruiser is as stock as I’m able to keep it. I have owned this TLC for about 30 years. It was purchased form my next-door neighbor who wanted to buy one of the first Toyota 4-Runners.  It spent much of its life in Utah where climate is dry but it is now exploring West Virginia’s country roads. It has never been used for rock-crawling, but has traversed any number of Easy to Moderate Rating 2 and 3 Jeep trails, BLM and logging roads in the southwest. I'm 78 and now need to make some lifestyle changes.

It has been entered in local car shows (Foreign/Import, Miscellaneous, 4X4 Truck, and Special Interest Category). Our Land Cruiser is commonly classified as a truck--not a SUV. We have been told by several individuals that this is the first vehicle of this type they have ever seen!

The emission system has not been tampered with and it has a current W.Va. safety inspection. Mileage shown is believed to be actual as the odometer has never been inoperative during the time-period of our ownership, but mileage may increase slightly from that pictured.

The original owner’s manual, jack, and tire tools and their pouch are included. All mechanical and electrical items function including lights, horn, wipers, radio, turn signals, window cranks, door latches and locks. We have the original keys for doors, ignition, gas cap door and rear door.

Repairs, which have been rare, are made using original Toyota parts and generally accomplished by a Toyota dealership. It has manually locking front hubs. The transfer case has high and low speeds, and the 4-speed transmission easily up-shifts and down-shifts. We have never used it for towing. It is extremely reliable and has never let us down a single time during our nearly three decades of ownership and we have been in some very remote and isolated locations.

It has the original 6-cylinder engine and boosted disc brakes. It has no power accessories, air conditioning, cruise control, sound insulation, etc. It has a rear-seat area heater. The headliner is beginning to sag in the rear corners.

The paint is original except for professionally repaired and painted rust spots on the front fenders, rear quarter panels and beneath the rear door. Some small rust spots appear on the inside right rear fender, where steps join the body and on hood latches. The pan and frame show very little rust considering the vehicle's age, but springs, shocks, hubs and shackle area do show surface rust. The skid plates show no sign of ever being in contact with hard objects (see photo). No rust is seen that affects structural integrity. Rubber bushings on leaf springs show signs of deterioration.

It has never been in an accident. An inch-long crack is in the vinyl dash and it could use a new seal around the rear passenger-side door. A CB antenna is installed on the rear. Rear speakers are installed but are low-tech by today's standards. Cloth seat covers have been installed during our entire ownership time-period. The tires are somewhat worn but we prefer them that way as they don’t pick up and throw rocks denting unprotected fenders.

There is some seal leakage on the front axle knuckle balls and transfer case. It starts when cold with half-choke; it idles nicely and doesn't hesitate when accelerating. However, if it sits around for several months, may take a few extra cranks to start.

The vehicle is kept garaged but is 34-years old and has expected age-related minor flaws, all of which are not listed here.

West Virginia title is free and clear and in my name. My license plate will be removed at time of sale. If the buyer does not trailer the vehicle, to stay legal, buyer can easily purchase a One Way Trip Permit from the West Virginia State Police at a cost of $5.00. Proof of insurance will be required.

This vehicle has no warranty and is being sold "as-is."

Please, only bid on this vehicle if you are serious about owning it and have the necessary funds readily available. Winner must contact me within 24 hours after close of auction and place a $500.00 non-refundable deposit to PayPal within 24 hours. Full payment, if not cash, must clear my local bank before the vehicle will be released. Balance of payment is due within 7 days of the end of the auction and I cannot assist in financing. Buyer is responsible for all taxes, license, title, and other transfer fees. Buyer should be familiar with these costs and have all questions answered prior to bidding. Pick-up and shipping is the responsibility of the new owner.

You are welcome and encouraged to come view and test drive the vehicle prior to your bidding.

Becoming the winner is not an invitation to inspect the car after the auction has ended and deciding then if you want it or not. Upon completion of the auction, the winner will be contractually obligated to purchase the car in accordance with e-Bay policies.

Car thief caught in McDonald's drive-thru after placing order with owner

Mon, 20 May 2013

If you're going to drive a stolen car in a town of roughly 77,000 people - about the same size as Scranton, Pennsylvania or Ogden, Utah - you want to be very careful about where you drive that stolen car to eat. That's the lesson Katherine York of Kennewick, Washington learned when she was arrested for being in possession of a stolen Toyota 4Runner that also happened to have a bunch of stolen clothes from JC Penney and Sears in it.
Virginia Maiden woke up Tuesday, May 14 to find her 1995 4Runner - that she thought she forgot to lock - swiped from her apartment building. At 3 PM that afternoon, while working her shift at the drive-thru at McDonald's that day, she saw her truck in line. York hadn't even gone far - the McDonald's is not even five miles from Maiden's apartment. Maiden called the police, they showed up just as York was leaving, and York made another vehicle switch, this time into a black-and-white for a trip to the Benton County jail. They don't have McDonald's there, but she won't have so far to go to eat.

Toyota mini doc chronicles Tundra towing Space Shuttle Endeavor

Thu, 21 Mar 2013

Toyota has worked up a quick video detailing the brand's involvement in the transportation of the Space Shuttle Endeavour last year. As you may recollect, the California Science Center ran into a hitch when it came to moving Endeavour from LAX to its new home. While most of the route would be covered by a robotically controlled transporter, one portion of the route directed the shuttle over an interstate. Unfortunately, the bridge across wasn't designed to stand up to the weight of the shuttle and its motorized sled.
The Science Center would have to remove Endeavour from its transporter and place it on a lighter, non-motorized sled. That's where longtime Science Center sponsor Toyota came in. As it turns out, the automaker had to prove to the California Science Center that a Tundra could actually tow the massive shuttle, so engineers put on a little demonstration with a stock truck pulling the equivalent weight over flat ground for the same distance. Once the Science Center was satisfied that the Tundra could pull it off, the move was green lit and the rest is history. Check out the short documentary below for yourself.

10 most memorable cars and SUVs of 2019

Tue, Dec 24 2019

It's no surprise that a car reviewer will drive a large number of cars over the course of a year. Indeed, when the clock strikes midnight on Dec 31, I will have driven 75 new cars, trucks and SUV this year (and one old Peugeot) over the course of weekly evaluation loans and first drive events. That sure seems like a lot. Some definitely got more attention than others, and some came and went without leaving much of an impression – I completely forgot I drove a Kia Forte. Yet in the spirit of this day, I thought I'd pick the 10 that I would love to see under the Christmas tree tomorrow morning. You know, just in case you were looking to get me something. I'll also throw in a couple disappointments that were memorable for the wrong reasons. They'd get sent back to the store on Boxing Day. Lexus LC 500 Pictured below and resplendent in its Flare Yellow metallic paint, the car that would reach highest on my list is the divine Lexus LC 500. As a devout lover of GT cars, the LC ticks all the boxes. Muscular and characterful engine? V8, check. Beautifully made and memorable interior? It's gorgeous, to hell with Remote Touch. Check. Comfortable and reasonably practical? Superb seats and, uh, yeah. Makes me want to stand there and stare at it? You bet. Though I long figured my heart would say LC but my head "Porsche 911," after this go-around, that's no longer the case. LC, pretty please. 2020-lexus-lc500-f34-2 View 19 Photos Polestar 1 I actually feel lucky that I got to drive the Polestar 1. Only 150 will be produced each year, and it's a far more special thing than it would initially appear. And that's despite initially appearing to be a beautiful, classic two-door GT car with a roof so rakish it's only possible because it's made of carbon fiber. That itÂ’s a massively powerful plug-in hybrid with more all-electric range than any other PHEV is a thick dollop of whipped cream on a slice of Toscakaka. You know, Swedish dessert, Swedish car. Fine, I'll stick to Ikea references.  Polestar1_Launch_SanFrancisco-0014 View 44 Photos Volvo V60 Cross Country Speaking of Sweden, did I drive this car off the road there? Sure did! And despite this, the V60 Cross Country scratches that certain wagon itch and looks sensational to boot. I wish it were available with the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain, but it's best not to get greedy at Christmas.
