This is rare and excellent example of a 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 Factory Soft Top Model.
First year of factory roll bar and upgraded engine and maybe the first year of the 4 speed.

Don't be scared off by the Buy it Now. Reserve price is barely what this truck is worth in parts; well below the buy it now. If you've always wanted a factory soft top, this may be your shot. Turns out they stopped making them in like 1975, at least the US spec ones.

FJ40s can be hard to find in this condition regardless of year/model, but they are nearly impossible to find in the soft top configuration and including the original bows, doors, tailgate, etc. You could look at/for FJ40s every day and these simply are not out there. This is the one I'll someday wish I didn't sell!

Limited amount of rust + original parts and condition make this a perfect candidate for a driver, trail rig, or full restore.

Original Freeborn Red Paint, no bondo or repaint here. The Arizona sun has worked it's magic to leave a nice patina.
Original drive train including the solid, multi-named, seldom cursed F.5 or F1.5 or F and a half engine. They say it's solid like the earlier F engines with an updated oiling system.
4 speed transmission.
Warn Manual locking front hubs.
No extra holes in the dash! (Factory dashboard has some cracks.)

Sale includes:
Full set of soft top bows (red ones that this truck was born with)
Both 'soft' doors, still with factory white canvas (dusty from being stored indoors in Arizona)
Rust free drop down tailgate, correct for this model and original to this vehicle.
Aftermarket white soft top, vintage but in great condition; (NOT a diagonal window j**p style top)

I purchased this vehicle from a retired postal worker who lives in North Phoenix. He had it for 15 years or so and told me he purchased it from his brother. A thorough title search, which I have not done, would be able to confirm this. I believe the mileage to be 119,000 +/-.

Recently replaced:
Fuel pump (new one that was included when I purchase the vehicle)
Fuel tank
Radiator
Seats (*NEW* front seat upholstery; seats are from a newer FJ40 with headrests)
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug wires
Shocks (napa)
Aftermarket gauge set (ALL factory gauges work as well), no holes drilled for aftermarket gauges.

This Land Cruiser starts right up and idles nicely with *NO* choke. (It has a choke, I just don't use it.)
Accelerates through all 4 gears, solid clutch does not slip and *NO* grinding or popping out of gear.
A slight backfire when you let off the gas at speed. None at idle at full operating temperature.
Brakes are great. Factory seat belts at all 4 seats.
Period correct rear jump seats, they are not original to this vehicle but are original / unrestored. I have the original ones to this vehicle (upholstery not good) which can be swapped in at no cost, only one set of jump seats is included.
Full set of 5 factory wheels and hubcaps. Front hubcaps might be the every so classy rear ones with holes cut out.
Tires are mismatched set of 31.5x10.5x15.
Limited Rust; just on the rear sill and corners. NO rust under the vehicle or on the frame.
CAUTION: When you start driving this, children will stare. Dogs will want to ride in it. Women will want to ride in it too but won't admit it. -zetasig.

Known Issues (If I was keeping I would fix these things).
Prior owner removed the skid plate and in the process broke off the passenger side bolts for it. Probably best to drill/tap new holes, would be just as quick as drilling out the original bolts. Skid plate is included with sale.
Exhaust is tweaked somehow so the skip plate does not go into place. Exhaust might be tweaked from the manifold back. I was quoted under $200 for complete new exhaust, installed at a local muffler shop.

Toyota wants you to meet an 'obsessed' hydrogen fuel cell engineer

Thu, May 8 2014

Like a television-broadcasting company covering the Olympics, Toyota is looking to market its future in hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle production by taking the personal approach. In this case, the Japanese automaker is telling the backstory of Jackie Birdsall, an engineer at Toyota Technical Center who Toyota says is "obsessed" with fuel-cell technology. A Sacramento native, Birdsall is responsible for testing fuel-cell vehicles and making sure hydrogen stations fill the tanks of the cars in a "reasonable" timeframe. Long a gearhead, she attended Flint, MI's Kettering University (formerly General Motors Institute) and, among other places, worked for the California Fuel Cell Partnership before joining Toyota in 2012. Her first car was an '87 Camry. That's one personal side of Toyota's hydrogen push, and shows another way Toyota is introducing the world to this new powertrain (see also: winter performance). The nitty-gritty is made up of things like working with FirstElement Fuel Inc. on a hydrogen-refueling network in California. As for its fuel-cell sedan, which was displayed in FCV prototype form at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January and is due next year, Toyota said it expects the car to have a full-tank range of about 300 miles and a five-minute refueling time. That's if Ms. Birdsall has anything to say about it. Check out Toyota's press release about Birdsall below. Talkin' 'Bout a Revolution A healthy obsession leads Jackie Birdsall and TTC to the forefront of history The word she keeps using is "obsessed." Jackie Birdsall became "obsessed" with cars when she was a teenager. That made her "obsessed" with the history of auto icons like Henry Ford and Lee Iacocca. In 2003, she did an internship with Daimler-Chrysler, leading to an "obsession" with hydrogen fuel cell technology. And now, as an engineer at Toyota Technical Center, Birdsall is "obsessed" with bringing fuel cell technology to the masses. But perhaps you need to be obsessed when you're trying to change the world. After all, revolutions don't blossom from complacency. Leading an alternative fuel revolution is just what Birdsall and her partners on the Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle team are doing. Collectively, they're finding tangible ways to reduce fossil fuels in the automobile world and figuring out how hydrogen fuel cells can be useful and affordable. In 2015, that obsession will bear fruit when Toyota's FCV hits the markets in California, Japan and Europe.

Toyota again claims Corolla outsold Focus worldwide

Wed, 10 Apr 2013

Toyota isn't convinced the Ford Focus was the best-selling nameplate globally last year. Bloomberg reports that for the second time in seven months, both Toyota and Ford are laying claim to the title. Ford cites R.L. Polk & Co. data that says the automaker moved some 1.02 million Focus models in 2012 compared to just 872,774 Toyota Corolla units. But Toyota says the actual figure is closer to 1.16 million Corolla models.
Last year, Ford said it took the sales crown through the fist half of 2012 based on information from IHS Automotive, but Toyota pointed out those numbers left out models like the Corolla-based Matrix and Auris, as well as the Corolla Fielder and Scion xB-based Corolla Rumion. Whether or not Toyota's belief that all these cars should be counted in the Corolla bucket is accurate or not is seemingly up for debate... as is the question of why it matters so much to both parties.
This time around, Ford is holding the line that the Focus is the "best-selling nameplate," with Erich Merkle, a US sales analyst with Ford saying the company's figure is, "a pure number that is verified by a third party." Toyota, meanwhile, has requested clarification from Polk.

Translogic 164: Driving the fuel cell vehicles of the 2014 LA Auto Show

Wed, Nov 26 2014

The LA Auto Show is known for its environmentally friendly vehicle debuts. At last year's show, hydrogen fuel cell concepts from Honda and Toyota joined a lease-ready Hyundai Tucson FCEV to cast a green hue over the convention center. This year, automakers took us a step closer to a fuel cell future by offering drives of their hydrogen-electric hybrids. Translogic host Jonathon Buckley takes a ride in the Toyota Mirai, which is headed for production in 2016. He follows that with a spin in the Volkswagen Passat HyMotion and the Audi A7 Sportback h-tron quattro concept. Which of these fuel cell vehicles holds the most promise? Tune in to find out.
