Hi folks. I have a very original 1972 FJ55 up for sale. I bought it about a year and a half ago from the original owner / family in Palm Desert, CA. At the time, it wasn't getting much use by the 90-something year-old owner. Apparently the manual steering got to be a bit too much for him after 90. After I purchased it, I immediately took it to legendary Land Cruiser shop Mark's Off Road in LA and had him do a full inspection. Here are a few of the repairs, totaling more than $5000.

rebuilt carb
rebuilt the steering column
serviced front end
installed new distributor
electric ignition
valve adjustment
new valve cover (from 2F)
new stainless steel oil lines
new speedometer
adjusted brakes

It's tough for me to part with it, but I'm moving out of state, and I need to sell it right away. It's not a show vehicle, but it's a solid FJ55 that had the luxury of living in the dry California desert. It does have rust spots, highlighted in the photos, but very minimal for an FJ55. It cruises 62-65 mph on the freeway easily, with the original 3 speed transmission. The interior is in good condition, minus the headliner. It has the original rubber mats and Toyota mud flaps. The exterior is fairly clean. It's missing a side marker lens cover, and the driver side mirror just broke.  It was repainted the original blue and white colors at some point in its life, and there is some overspray. It had a dealership undercoating, which has preserved the frame extremely well. When Mark was rebuilding the steering column, he was blown away by how well it cleaned up. True mileage is unknown, but it's likely just over 100K miles. The rear window works by the key in the back, but needs some help with a hand. All in all, a very clean FJ55.

If it doesn't sell this week, I'm shipping it to my new home!

Feel free to email me with any questions.

Thanks!

Will

Pickup sales may hit 2M units for first time since 2007

Sat, 21 Sep 2013

Even as fuel prices creep back up, trucks are still a hot item among new-vehicle shoppers. To see how popular pickup trucks still are, you don't have to look any further than how much effort automakers put into the continual one-upmanship of their trucks. Backing this fact up, USA Today is reporting that the segment could top two million sales this year - a total not matched since 2007, though still far from the pre-recession, three-million-unit levels.
Through August, the Ford F-Series continues to be the segment leader with almost 500,000 units sold, but the Chevy Silverado (328,269), Ram 1500 (234,642), GMC Sierra (122,232) and Toyota Tacoma (110,293) are all seeing at least 20-percent sales increases, helping to account for around 1.44 million truck sales so far this year - not including possible outliers like the Suzuki Equator and Chevy Avalanche.
This year alone, General Motors has completely redesigned its fullsize trucks, Ram and Toyota have significantly updated their offerings, the next-gen Ford F-150 will be out next year and Nissan is promising an all-new Titan around the same time with an eventual Cummins diesel under the hood. It would seem, then, that truck sales are poised to continue their upward trend.

Reprising The Recipe For A Perfect Slice Of Toast
My toaster broke the other week. Halfway through the process of cooking my gourmet Pop-Tart breakfast, the thing crapped out with a small bang, leaving my delicious morning treats trapped inside. To rectify the situation, I ventured out to a big box store, located the toaster aisle, and ran a couple of questions through my mind. Do I need two slots or four? Do I need to spend more than 20 bucks on this thing? Should I just buy a toaster oven to give me a wider range of bachelor-pad cooking functionality? After no more than two minutes of contemplation, I grabbed the cheapest one on the shelf, paid and left the store. The new toaster works just fine.
This sort of unemotional shopping experience is how I suspect people decide to purchase the Toyota Corolla. It's a perfectly fine appliance, and to a good number of people in the world, the bond between a car and a driver is no more important than the connection I feel to my toaster. Does it seat four people relatively comfortably? Does it get decent fuel economy? Is it easy to drive? Reliable? Safe? The Corolla checks all of these boxes, and because of that, Toyota managed to move just under 300,000 examples of the tenth-generation car in 2012 (though that number does include sales of the Corolla-based, now-deceased Matrix) - a vehicle that, at the time, was already six years old.

Report: Daihatsu leaving European market

Sun, 16 Jan 2011

More than any other, two carmaking giants sit at the top of the industry: Toyota and General Motors. But while GM sells under a (shrinking but still) expansive range of brands, the Toyota Motor Corporation sells most of its vehicles under its own name. That doesn't mean that Toyota, however, doesn't have its own portfolio of subsidiaries. Here in the United States we have the youth-oriented Scion division, while Lexus handles its upscale offerings, and overseas there's Daihatsu.
The budget brand offers a range of small cars under its own name; most are hatchbacks, but there's also the Copen roadster and even a rebadged Camry called the Altis. You may have come across some of their offerings while traveling overseas, particularly in Europe, but that last part is about to come to an end, according to reports.
Word from across the pond is that Toyota plans to withdraw Daihatsu from the European market altogether. The move would reportedly take effect in 2013, and if it comes to pass, would follow similar withdrawals from the North American (1992) and Australian (2006) markets. Thanks for the tip, William!
