AutoWeek Review for anyone who has not driven a 2011 Highlander Limited before:

EXECUTIVE EDITOR--AUTOWEEK.COM BOB GRITZINGER: Hefty, pricey, but also near perfect: That's what this flagship version of the Highlander seems to be. In the past, Highlanders seemed to be a little underwhelming--nice enough vehicles, for sure, utilitarian and functional, yes, but nothing too special. This one, with all of this equipment, changes that perception from the moment you settle in behind the wheel. This is one substantial vehicle, with all the bells and whistles one could ever want.

The vehicle looks more stylish than its predecessors, with sharp paint and sheetmetal and a very upscale feel to the interior. It's a good-looking, right-sized vehicle that offers a third row and a third seat between the captain chairs in the second row in case you need max people hauling capacity.

Power from the 3.5-liter V6 is strong, and while a five-speed automatic may not be state of the art, it does the job and is easily manageable via the slap shifter. The steering is a little vague and seemingly needs regular, slight corrections to stay on course, but most drivers probably won't notice. The ride is smooth and quiet, and despite what feels like quite a bit of overall weight, the body roll seems well controlled.

If you can afford to go this far on sticker for what starts as a much less expensive vehicle, the Highlander Limited gives you a lot of vehicle for the money.

NEWS EDITOR GREG MIGLIORE: I downright enjoyed my travels in this troop transporter of a truck. It's freakin' huge, but it doesn't drive like a monster. In fact, the Highlander is well-civilized in most situations. Even when striking through expressway curves at a decent rate of speed, this ute doesn't come unnerved. The roll is reasonable--even a bit better--than most in this segment. The steering pickup is light off center but offers responsive feedback farther into maneuvers; these big wheels add weight, but not overly so.

So, yes, it handles a bit better than many vehicles in class. The Highlander is also well-powered. I thought this was a V8 at first blush, as the 270 horses are channeled efficiently and there's strong push all the way to redline. The five-speed automatic is simple and efficient. Upshifts are smooth as the revs build but not in an angry fashion. Launches are energetic, and passing is no sweat.

This Highlander is also well-suited to daily driving, cushioning road imperfections, train tracks and nearly anything in its path. The suspension is impressive, and the shocks are not excessively bouncy; whack a pothole, and this Toyota hardly blanches. This is much more relaxed than some trucks, which pitch and roll with every obstacle.

The looks are spot-on, in my view. The Highlander has sleek styling and extends back. The lines have a horizontal flow, almost reminiscent of when car styling took cues from locomotives, and there are curves around the wheel wells that make for attractive accents. The greenhouse and pillars also set off the appearance well, looking sleek and swift in contrast to many top-heavy-looking vehicles in this segment. The cabin is luxuriously appointed (as it should be for $43,000), and the door panels feel soft and pleasing. The cabin is reasonably quiet with just a hint of engine din creeping in.

My only preference would be to slash some of the electronic goodies to get the price down a bit. But if you're in the market for a ship like this, you probably want to check most of the option boxes because it will likely be a long-term member of your personal fleet--and it would be a good one.

Toyota Mirai might be the name of new fuel cell car; it means 'future'

Wed, Jul 30 2014

Anybody remember the Ford Futura? It wasn't exactly a world-beater of a car, so we don't think the name Toyota's has apparently chosen for its first production fuel-cell vehicle is a tribute of sorts. Though one never knows. Maybe Toyota just likes 18-inch-tall EVs. The Japanese automaker has apparently settled on a nameplate for its fuel-cell model, and the name will be "Mirai," which means "future" in Japanese, Bloomberg News says, citing a person familiar with the process that it didn't identify. Bloomberg couldn't get anyone with Toyota to comment on record about the name – and neither could AutoblogGreen – but we do remember that Toyota has bandied this name about before, so we're not setting anything down in stone quite yet. Last month, Toyota said the new fuel cell car would debut in Japan next April and would be priced at about $69,000 before any sort of government incentives kicked in. The company hasn't revealed details about a US release date or pricing here, but indicated that US sales would start where there's already some semblance of a hydrogen-refueling infrastructure. That pretty much means California and nowhere else in the states. The fuel-cell model is said to have a full-tank range of about 435 miles and that the tank can be filled up in about three minutes, similar to a gas-powered vehicle. In other words, the future.

America was the unexpected theme at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show thanks to Trump

Wed, Jan 11 2017

President-elect Donald Trump was not in attendance at this year's Detroit Auto Show, but it sure seemed like he was the target audience for many of the press conferences and announcements surrounding the event. Several manufacturers chose to play up existing and future commitments to the US in general and American jobs specifically in their presentations to the press, and we're pretty sure that has everything to do with Trump's recent targeting of automakers on Twitter. To us, it seemed automakers were going on the offensive to try and preempt any future tweet-shaming for investing in auto manufacturing anywhere but the US. The pro-America sentiment started the week prior to the auto show, with Ford announcing that it would build several future electrified vehicles at its Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan and also cancel a $1.6 billion factory planned for Mexico. Ford announced the two items on the same day, but the reality is that they likely have no relation to each other; the Mexican plant is being skipped because the company doesn't need the extra capacity to build the Ford Focus right now. Trump was still happy to share the news on Twitter. Then, on Sunday, FCA announced it would invest $1 billion in manufacturing plants in Ohio and Michigan to produce the new Jeep Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, and Wrangler-based pickup. It's not as though those potential new jobs were on their way out of the US, necessarily, but FCA took the opportunity to mention that plant upgrades at the Warren Truck Plant would allow the company to build Ram heavy duty trucks, which are currently assembled in Mexico, there. CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed that Trump and his proposed tariffs had nothing to do with the decision. We certainly believe that, but we also have to believe that the timing of the release, positive outcome for America, and zero gain for Mexico were all orchestrated. Again, Trump sent out a victory tweet as if this had been his doing. Ford then used its press conference at the show on Monday to reiterate the plans for Flat Rock and also confirm that the Ford Bronco and Ranger nameplates will be returning to the US market, and that both will be built at a plant in Michigan. Announcements of manufacturing locations are usually aimed at the UAW, which certainly has a stake in these things, but again this one was broadcast to the auto show crowd in general.

Lower gas prices mean there are excellent deals on green cars right now

Sat, Jan 17 2015

The phenomenon was big enough to make news in 2006, then in 2008, in 2011, in 2012, in 2013, and again last year: a big move in gas prices means a big move in alternative-fuel-vehicle sales. True Car's TrueSavings report, which averages transaction prices across the country to figure out what people are paying compared to MSRP, shows that electric cars and hybrids are ripe for excellent savings right now. The Ford Focus Electric presents the greatest disparity, with the average transaction price of $25,168 representing a 16.1-percent saving off its $29,995 MSRP. The Kia Optima Hybrid and Toyota Prius also snagged spots in the top five, with the Kia offering a 10.7-percent discount and the Toyota a 10.1-percent discount. One hybrid managed to show up among the top five lease offers, too: the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid is just $315 a month for 36 months after $3,875 down in some markets. Alt-energy vehicles got bumped out of the top five finance deals, however. That was dominated by light trucks and, oddly, two subcompacts. The press release below has more details. TrueCar finds hybrids, EVs top list of best savings in January Gasoline price plunge = savings for consumers on alternative fuel vehicles SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Ford's Focus Electric hatchback, which sells at an average of 16 percent off MSRP, tops January's list of best savings on new vehicles, according to TrueCar, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRUE), the negotiation-free car buying and selling platform. The "TrueSavings" monthly report analyzes current transaction prices and identifies opportunities for consumer savings. "Fuel savings are not top of mind to many consumers right now, and that makes this a great time to buy a hybrid or electric vehicle," said John Krafcik, president of TrueCar. "With gasoline prices now averaging just $2.10 per gallon, and vehicle preferences tied so closely to short-term gasoline prices, automakers are heavily discounting their most fuel-efficient cars to clear inventories." Toyota's Prius, the world's best-selling alternative fuel vehicle for more than a decade, also makes January's list of best savings. Customers who purchase a Prius Two model this month can save 10 percent off the hybrid car's $25,025 MSRP. "Gasoline prices and vehicle type preferences are strongly related, and this relationship is cyclical in nature," said Krafcik.
