This FJ40 has had a very thorough refurbishing starting by removing the tub for cleaning and painting frame, overhauling engine and drive train, painting body and installing new interior. I will try my best to describe the FJ as honestly as possible and list those things that have been done and those needing to be done.  I bought this project disassembled and have been there throughout it's reassembly process. Many original OEM parts were used as well as new OEM and aftermarket parts. The engine was overhauled by a reputable shop and was balanced and blue printed during rebuild. It starts easily, runs smoothly and is typical of a well done rebuilt engine. At the same time the transmission, transfer case and both differentials were gone though and brought back to spec. The body is straight and only has very minor scuffs or dents. As you can tell from the pics there are no signs of damage to the undercarriage or body. The front bumper has a small bend on the passenger side. Hard to notice unless you are looking down the length of the bumper. The FJ was moved three times while disassembled prior to my ownership so there are some blemishes in the exterior paint from handling and strorage. It has a good "20 foot" daily driver paint job. There is light to moderate "orange peel" effect in the paint. The paint covers well and has good protection quality. I do not use the term "frame off restoration" because this was not a nut and bolt redo. However great effort was taken to insure it was well done for a daily driver vehicle. I will list what has been done mechanical and appearance wise. Open to all questions about the FJ except what my reserve price will be.

Mechanical:

Engine overhaul with balance and blueprint performed.
Transmission, differentials and transfer case were inspected and brought back to specs where needed. Shifts smoothly and 4X4 works correctly and hubs turn easily.

New:

Brakes
Brake master cylinder
Clutch disc, pressure plate and release bearing
Clutch master and slave cylinder
Shocks
Rear axle bearings and seals
Water pump
Exhaust from header pipe back
Weber carb
HEI distributor
Voltage regulator
Fuel tank (poly) and sending unit
Fuel lines
Equis primary gauges were installed in radio opening with no modification to dash. Didn't trust new engine to old gauges for break in. Can be returned to orig gauge cluster.
Equis Gauges are lighted.
Amp and fuel gauge still hooked up and working on original gauge cluster
Horns
New speedometer cable. Speedometer and odometer work correctly

Appearance:

New windshield. All other glass is in great shape as well except a scratch in lower passenger window that is light enough it won't show in pics.
Rhino liner inside tub
New weather stripping on top to sides, sides to tub and all doors. Window weather stripping is in very good shape.
All panels were reattached with stainless hardware
New inside door trim panels that match upholstery
New sun visors
New mirrors (These are after market and not the quality of OEM.)
Seat upholstery is not seat covers but done by local shop. Quality material and workmanship. Seat frames were sanded and painted before being recovered.
New door pulls on front doors
New dash pad cover
Front door retainers have been replace with straps similar to Jeep. Easier to get doors off and on.

May have missed a thing or two but those are the main ones.

Things to be done or not working or missing:
Have new headliner still in box that needs to be installed. Tan.
Windshield wiper motor has power to it from the switch but does not work. Don't have anyone local to check it out.
Center lower dash pad is missing
No radio or antenna
Light switch was replaced with aftermarket switch that did not have rheostat control so gauge cluster lights do not work
Seat belt and brake warning lights are not hooked up
No jack or tools
Windshield washer reservoir has crack and will not hold water. Pump motor works. Radiator overflow tank is solid.
Tires are average mid life

Additional info:

Unknown miles on vehicle. The original odometer showed 72,xxx miles but has been replaced with one that shows 5,xxx miles. The great condition of the FJ would leave me to believe the 72,xxx miles would have been correct. But miles are "unknown". The previous owner was the one who decided to overhaul the engine with the body disassembled and motor off of the frame as it was an easy time to have it done.

Did Lexus make a BMW? Or did BMW make a Lexus? This and other 2017 surprises

Fri, Dec 29 2017

It's that time of year again. The calendar is about to reach its end, Star Trek Cats 2018 is about to take its place, and I'm reflecting about all the cars that graced my driveway this year or summoned me to exotic places. You know, like Stuttgart or Phoenix. In 2017, I drove at least 57, and as I perused the list of them, I started to notice a common refrain: "This car surprised me." Most were pleasant surprises, but there were a few head scratchers and facepalms for good measure. In both cases, it was generally the result of car companies seemingly trying to break out of an existing mold. Nowhere was that more apparent than the pair of Lexuses slathered in Infrared paint: The LS 500 that left me this week and the LC 500 that was my favorite car of 2017. Though Lexus has been trying to shake its crusty, gold-packaged reputation for some time now, its efforts always seemed like an old man choosing Hollister to redo his wardrobe after realizing it hasn't been updated since 1987. I fell in love with the LC, genuinely floored by its near-perfect take on the GT. It's characterful in sound, appearance and tactility. It was at home in the city, in the mountain and on the open road. It was both comfortable and thrilling, and after driving the mechanically related LS 500, I can report that the LC's talents aren't an outlier. The LS 500's turbo V6 may make different noises than the LC's naturally aspirated V8, but it nevertheless invigorates the cabin when the car is placed in Sport+ mode. The steering is truly communicative, body motions are kept in miraculous check, and I absolutely forgot I was in an enormous luxury limo ... and a Lexus one at that. It was everything that the BMW 530e was not. I drove that on the exact same roads and was utterly bored the entire time. Generally doughy, lifeless steering, more distant than Planet 9. And no, the plug-in hybrid powertrain had nothing to do with that. At least it shouldn't. The Porsche Panamera S e-Hybrid I also drove this year proves that, as do the Hyundai Ioniqs, which are surprisingly adept and fun little cars regardless of what powers their wheels (Hyundai + hybrid = fun really blew me away). I would drive that Lexus LS F Sport over the BMW 5 Series any day of the week, which seems like a shocking thing to say in relation to either car. While Lexus is seemingly breaking out of its old crusty mold, BMW seems to be climbing into one.

BMW-Toyota sports car heading towards Tokyo debut

Mon, 20 May 2013

Earlier this year, BMW and Toyota confirmed a four-part joint venture mostly focusing on increasing improving vehicle efficiency using fuel cells, lightweight materials and better battery technology. Also tucked into the announcement was a "feasibility study" for a shared platform to underpin a future midsize "sports vehicle."
In terms of the latter, it seems that things have stepped up from the feasibility stage to the conceptual stage, as Motor Trend reports we could see a pair of new sports car concepts debut later this year in at the Tokyo Motor Show. There isn't much information about the new program, but the article suggests the sports cars could be all-wheel drive hybrids, with electric motors powering the front wheels and a gas engine powering the rear wheels. While a partnership between Toyota and BMW might not lend itself to a catchy portmanteau like "Toyobaru," here's hoping it will bear fruit that is as exciting as the ones produced by the Toyota/Subaru tie up.

The 2019 North American International Auto Show might have been a little more quiet than past years, but there were still some pretty major reveals, including the Toyota Supra, new Ford Explorer, Shelby GT500, Subaru WRX STI S209 and Kia Telluride. We also saw some lovely concepts like the Nissan IMs and Lexus LC Convertible. Senior Editor Alex Kierstein, Consumer Editor Jeremy Korzeniewski and Senior Green Editor John Beltz Snyder join me, Associate Editor Reese Counts — with Social Media Manager Michael Dylan Ferrara behind the camera — on a long walk through the show. We discuss cars, poke around the stands, dress a bloody wound and answer your questions in the Facebook comments.
