Please note: I am only willing to accept cash, electronic transfer such as Chase QuickPay, or a bank-certified check. I will not accept credit card payments of any kind! The car MUST be picked up within 3 days of winning the auction. I cannot budge on this because I will be moving to New York City. Please please please do not bid if you can't meet these conditions.

***I would be more than happy to let you test drive this car! If you would like to do so, please send me a message through eBay and leave your name and phone number. I am located in the city of Chicago in the Ukrainian Village neighborhood, and you will need to come to my place in order to test drive the car.

Here are the important details:

I am the original and sole owner of this car. I purchased it brand new in April of 2000. I have been the only driver of this car, and it has never been in any accidents. The driving pattern has been a mix of both highway and city driving. I lived in St. Louis for the first 5 years of the car, which is where most of the mileage occurred. This was mostly highway driving. I've only driven about 27,000 miles in the past 9 years. This has been a mix of city driving and highway driving--mostly from driving I-55 back to St. Louis once or twice a year. The only reason I am not keeping this car is because I am moving to New York City, where I don't really need a car, and the costs of owning one is absurd.

  • The really great thing about this car is that it only has 82,392 miles at the exact moment I am typing this. Mechanically, this car is in excellent condition. The only non-routine repair I have ever needed on this car was to replace the front struts, thanks to a huge Chicago pothole. This occurred in August of 2011. I have documentation for this and most of the last few routine repairs. I can provide copies or possibly a PDF scan. I have diligently kept up with all routine maintenance throughout the life of this car:
  • The car is working on its second battery, which is about 5 years old. I am very conscientious about having all electrical components--a/c, radio, etc--turned off when I cut power to the engine. I have not had any issues with the battery. I cannot find documentation for this one, but I can tell you that I bought the battery at a place that sells industrial batteries, so it is a quality battery.
  • The car is working on its third set of front brakes replaced in August of 2011, and its second set of rear brakes replaced in 2008. The brakes are still very strong and don't require a lot of pressure on the brake pedal.
  • The car is working on its second set of tires, which were replaced in November of 2009. They've got maybe 12,000 miles on them. The tread is over 50%, and the tires still perform well in the rain.
  • Oil has been replaced regularly about 3 times per year. The last tune-up was around 75,000 miles. The only thing needed outside of transmission flush, etc, was a new serpentine belt, which is pretty standard. (I can't find documentation for this one either.)
  • The a/c and heating are both still excellent. Never any problems and still work like brand new.
  • This car has passed all safety and emissions tests each year.
In looking at the Kelley Blue Book ratings, I would consider the mechanics of the car to be excellent.

In looking at the Kelley Blue Book ratings for non-mechanical issues, I would consider the car to be good (fair if being extra conservative). None of the issues with the car require necessary repairs. They are all superficially cosmetic flaws. I will try to describe them as best as I can.

  • There are a few places with rust. This occurs on the front hood, trunk, and along the driver-side back bumper area. None of the metal has been eaten through, and none of the rust stains are larger than that of a quarter. (See pictures.)
  • The car has its fair share of dings. The largest is on the driver-side rear end, right next to the bumper. There are a couple of other minor dings throughout the body of the car. Mostly from door bumps and a few on the roof from a hail storm.
  • There are a couple of stains on the interior cloth seats. Mostly from accidentally wiping oily hands on the seat after working on the car, and also from foolishly placing a bag of greasy food directly on the seat. Durrr... These stains aren't recent, so there isn't a chance that they'll stain your clothes or anything like that.
  • The cigarette lighter is broken. It's jammed and won't come out.
  • The CD player can be wonky at times. It is finnicky and will only play some CDs--haven't figured out the rhyme or reason. The am/fm radio on the CD player works fine.

So that's that. Overall, if you place a high priority on a mechanically sound vehicle, I think my opening bid is very, very reasonable given the low mileage and care I have taken with this car. To sweeten the deal, I'm going to throw in a few extra goodies--an ice chipper, two brand new oil filters, three new quarts of 5W-30, and one extra hubcap.

Last but not least, I have been on eBay for 15 years. In the entirety of that time, I have sold thousands of items, and I have received only 3 negative feedbacks. My honesty and integrity speak for themselves!

Please contact me with any queries.

I meant to say that I've been on ebay for 12 years; not 15. Sorry, didn't mean to misrepresent!

Toyota GT86, Scion FR-S sales disappointing worldwide?

Fri, 21 Feb 2014

Okay, folks - it appears we've got a problem. The Toyota GT86, Europe's counterpart to our own beloved Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S coupes, is apparently not selling too well. This, according to Toyota's European Vice President of Research and Development, Gerald Killman, is what's limiting plans for additional variants of the rear-drive coupe.
"A faster version of that car would be at the top of most people's wish lists, but like the cabriolet, it is hard to justify a business case to push either model into production based on the current sales," Killman told AutoExpress. "Personally, I think that engine could use a little bit more," he added.
More troubling is that slow sales aren't limited to the Euro-spec car, with Killman claiming that the GT86 have been missing sales targets in major markets around the globe. It may not be that the US is one of those major markets, though. Scion's Vice President, Doug Murtha, tells Autoblog that his brand is happy with the sales of its version of the GT86, the FR-S. 18,000 units were sold last year, which Murtha says is "generally in line with original expectations for the car."

Hello, Siri? Please don't crash the car

Tue, Oct 7 2014

Hands on the wheel and eyes on the road? You could still be distracted while driving. Voice-recognition software that many automakers tout as a safer alternative to handheld devices can still divert drivers' attention, a new study published by AAA found. Researchers noted that workload ratings were the highest on their scales when participants in the study used Siri. The technology is alluring because it allows drivers to do things like change the radio station or compose a text message without removing their hands from the wheel or their gaze from the road. But many of those tasks increase a driver's cognitive workload. Depending on the situation, that can be dangerous. "It's especially problematic, because you can be distracted and not know it," J. Peter Kissinger, president of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, told Autoblog. "That's the nature of mental distraction. It's hard to appreciate. ... Often, you don't know you're distracted until it's too late." There's significant variation in the results of the study. Simple, single-task car commands for operations like changing the radio station caused minimal increases in workload, about the same as listening to an audio book. Composing information using speech-to-text technology was more burdensome, and using menu-based functions caused a high level of cognitive workload. Siri-based interactions posed the highest levels of distraction, according to AAA. Researchers noted that workload ratings were the highest on their scales when participants in the study used Siri, and two of the three simulator crashes they observed during the study of 36 participants came while the subjects were interacting with Siri. The subjects weren't looking at nor making contact with their iPhones during these interactions. "Common issues involved inconsistencies in which Siri would produce different responses to seemingly identical commands," the researchers wrote. "In other circumstances, Siri required exact phrases to accomplish specific tasks and subtle deviations from that phrasing would result in a failure. ... Some participants also reported frustration with Siri's occasional sarcasm and wit." It wasn't just the complexity of the task that caused variations in level of distraction – the variations could also be dependent on the particular make and model of the car being tested.

Toyota GT86 gets TRD treatment in UK

Fri, 08 Feb 2013

As dearly as we love the Toyota GT86 / Scion FR-S / Subaru BRZ franchise, we readily admit we wouldn't look sideways at a model with a bit more firepower. And while that's not quite on the table yet, Toyota has been busy amping up the visual firepower of its rear-drive coupe with a whole host of TRD parts. To this point, that's been a largely à la carte affair, but the automaker's UK outpost has just announced a special-edition model that allows our British friends to pick up the whole shooting match all in one go.
The Toyota GT86 TRD will only be available in black and white, and just 250 examples are to be built. As you can see from the excellent gallery above, the catalog of look-faster bits include a more aggressive front air dam, side skirts, rear bumper fascia, spoiler and unique 18-inch forged alloys. Additional flourishes include a TRD shift lever and branded radiator cap. The sole concession to actual performance? A "fast-response quad exhaust" that might only improve things audibly - 0-62 mph is apparently unchanged at 7.7 seconds, and the top end is still 140 mph for the manual transmission model. (The auto gets by with 8.4 seconds and 130 mph).
Pricing? Glad you asked. £31,495 for GT 86 TRD manual, £32,995 for the automatic - that's nearly $50,000 US for the tripedalist and just over for the automatic. (Those are heady prices, but bear in mind that UK MSRPs and taxes are generally significantly higher than their US counterparts). If the standard GT86 is more your speed, it still rings up at a more affordable £24,995 - roughly $39,500 - leaving plenty of budget for actual performance parts. No word yet on North American availability of a special TRD model, but we've got a call in...
