This Celica is easily the most solid, rust-free example I've seen in 30 plus years of owning and working on these cars. I caught the bug when I was 17, and have owned 8 of the 71-77 Celicas. When I went to look at this car, I could not believe the absence of rust and major damage. I suppose it's because it was parked before they started using salt on the roads here in Montana.
After I got the car home it was easy to decide not to part the car out, instead I would preserve the awesome body pretty much as I found it, go through all systems on the car to make sure it was road worthy, and do some minor projects to make it look better. The motor was shot, so I installed a good running 8R from a 71 Celica I had parted out. Clutch is good, trans. shifts smoothly. Changed the trans. and rear diff. fluid, didn't note any hints of trouble in the old lube. Installed a good used center bearing since the old one was shot. Checked the brake pads on all four corners and changed the master cylinder and fluid. Installed newer front strut cartridges since the originals were seized. Changed out the pitman arm, idler arm and tie  rod ends for some nice tight ones from my parts pile. The wheels and tires got "borrowed" from my son's 75 Celica. The tires are less than 2 years old with maybe 2 thousand miles on them. The car runs and drives well.
The dash was cracked badly, I put cap on it. All lights and gauges work, heater works great and I think the a/c would with a recharge. New speaker for the AM radio. Seats are fair, rear have a couple sun blisters. Headliner is torn 2 places but doesn't sag. Carpet is poor. Door panels are nice, have small crack behind window cranks. Yes, all windows roll down and back up! Front and rear windshield are good. Replaced seals between quarter glass and door glass as well seals along roof line.
The floor is rock solid with cracked sound deadener and a couple minor dents from a trailer, I think. Rockers are good, trunk perfect, quarters perfect. Small rust through near bottom of front fenders, easy fix. The car has dents distributed evenly over it with a double dose on the hood. I gave it NICE bumpers. I think the best thing about the car is that it has no secrets!
Thanks for reading all this.(if you did)

Cars most likely to be involved in accidents

Tue, Nov 30 2021

Data from Insurify shows which models have the most accident-prone drivers behind the wheel. It also shows the proportion of the drivers of said vehicles with an at-fault accident on record in the past seven years, based on Insurify’s analysis of over 4 million car insurance applications. For reference, the national average is 10.78%, and each of these vehiclesÂ’ drivers represent a statistically significant increase over that. Now, it would be easy to infer that these cars are dangerous, but such is not necessarily the case. Remember, drivers cause accidents, not cars. These just happen to be the cars that accident-prone drivers drive. YouÂ’ll notice that many are mainstream, affordable cars, often with decent crash ratings. Also keep in mind that vehicle accidents are up since the beginning of the pandemic, so no matter what you drive, please drive safely. 10. Hyundai Ioniq This affordable, electrified vehicle platform sneaks into this list with 14.45% of drivers with a recent at-fault accident on record. 9. Lexus CT Another hybrid, this Prius-powered Lexus beats the national average at 14.57%. 8. Toyota Prius V Yet another hybrid, the larger but discontinued member of the Prius family sees 14.72% of its drivers with recent accidents. 7. Mazda CX-3 The Mazda CX-3, which is discontinued for the 2022 model year, sees the accident-prone making up 14.9% of its drivers. 6. Infiniti Q60 The second and final luxury car on this list has more accident-prone drivers than average, at 14.93%. 5. Subaru Impreza The first of two Subarus on this list has 15.1% of drivers with recent accidents on record. 4. Hyundai Genesis Coupe The Genesis Coupe was only on the market for a brief span before it was discontinued and Genesis spun off into its own luxury brand. That said, it too beats the national average for accidents, at 15.29%. 3. Subaru WRX Despite its standard all-wheel drive, the boy-racer WRX has 15.44% of drivers with a prior accident in the last seven years. 2. Kia Stinger We love the Kia Stinger, and had great luck with our long-termer that graced the Autoblog garage for a year. That said, 15.75% of its drivers represent have a recent accident on record. 1. Scion FR-S This fun two-seater attracts the most accident prone drivers, with 15.87% with recent at-fault crashes. Mazda ad showing Facebook updates while driving criticized by Senate committee [w/video]

Sat, 08 Feb 2014

Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller, D-WV, held an all-day summit on Thursday to discuss the dangers of using modern technology while driving, during which an ad that Mazda aired during the Super Bowl was used as an example of the worrisome future towards which we're headed. While seemingly innocuous at first glance, the ad, which can be seen below, shows a brief glimpse of a driver using the Mazda Connect infotainment system in a Mazda3 to check/update his Facebook page while driving down the road.
Officials from major communications companies like Samsung, Google and Apple attended the summit, as well as representatives from automakers including General Motors and Toyota. A representative from Mazda was not present despite the company's own currently available technology being used as the poster child for the issues being discussed.
According to Automotive News, Senator Rockefeller warned the automaker and communication execs on hand that he will propose legislation to regulate the use of technology while driving if they don't work together to implement their own standards more quickly. Michael Robinson, GM's vice president of sustainability and global regulatory affairs, argued that his company has had distracted driving guidelines in place for 15 years since the advent of its OnStar system, noting that the technology in question has also helped the automaker save lives through automatic crash detection and calls to 911.

Toyota recalls 690,000 Tacoma trucks for rusty leaf springs, fire risk

Mon, 29 Sep 2014

Toyota has announced that it will be issuing a recall of 690,000 Tacoma pickups from model years 2005 through 2011. The affected vehicles include both the four-wheel-drive model and the two-wheel-drive PreRunner (but not the standard 4x2 pickups), which may have a rather serious problem with their rear suspensions.
In some cases, corrosion and stress could cause one of the three or four leaves in the rear suspension's leaf springs to fracture. While the trucks can still be driven with a broken leaf, Toyota is concerned that it could move out of position and impact other components in the rear of the truck, with a particular focus on the fuel tank. Needless to say, but a piece of metal continuously impacting anything, let alone the fuel tank, is cause for concern.
As of this writing, there have been no reports of crashes, injuries, fires or deaths due to this problem, although that won't stop Toyota from informing all affected customers of the issue. Those 690,000 owners will need to report in to dealers for inspections and, if necessary, repairs.
