Tesla not talking about odd Model S prototype spotted in CA [w/video]
Fri, Mar 14 2014It's not a UFO, but this UDO (unidentified driving object) is causing almost as much of a stir on Reddit, Tesla Motors Club and other sites as a visit from Sanyassan marauders. It's tough to see in the video still above, but what we're looking at here is a Tesla Model S with a big ole something on top. That something (and you can see it a bit better in the video below or get a better view in a daylight picture over on Teslarati or even more at TMC) makes the car a mystery. Speculation is basically centered in three camps: either it's a weight thing, to allow for Tesla to test out the all-wheel drive system that is coming in the Model X and also to the Model S; or maybe it's test equipment for autonomous drive experiments. The third likely guess is that the blocky item is simply meant to simulate the weight and drag of a Model X and allow Tesla engineers the chance to test the suspension and handling of the upcoming falcon-winged crossover. Officially, there's no clarification on what, exactly, we're looking at. We've asked Tesla for a comment (and we're not the only ones), but have not heard anything back. If we do, we will of course let you know. Until then, we'll join Teslarati in calling this the Model S/X and wait to see what information others can scrape together. What's your guess? Watch a young Elon Musk take delivery of his McLaren F1
Fri, Jan 30 2015Years before Elon Musk was launching rockets into space or trying to revolutionize the auto business with Tesla, he was just another Silicon Valley geek, albeit already a very successful one. This vintage video catches Musk in 1999 celebrating some of that triumph, as he takes delivery of none other than a McLaren F1. As the million-dollar supercar is lowered from the transporter Musk intones, "It is the moment of my life." We also get a snapshot of an interesting time in Musk's life. According to the clip, he had already sold the company Zip2 for $400 million in cash and had started at the online banking business X. After a merger, it eventually became PayPal, and the entrepreneur later walked away from the website with another massive check. Watch this brief moment of happiness as Musk takes delivery of the McLaren, because by the end of the video, his focus already seemed to have turned to his next business venture. Tesla hires ex-Apple VP for new vehicle development
Sat, 26 Oct 2013Tesla announced Thursday that it has filled the position of vice president of vehicle programs, hiring former vice president of Mac hardware engineering at Apple, Doug Field, who started his career at Ford.
"Doug has demonstrated the leadership and technical talent to develop and deliver outstanding products, including what are widely considered the best computers in the world," says Elon Musk, co-founder and CEO of Tesla. "Doug's experience in both consumer electronics and traditional automotive makes him an important addition to our team," he relates. Field most recently was responsible for the latest MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and iMac.
Field says that he had no intention of leaving Apple until Tesla came along. "Tesla is at last an opportunity for me and many others to pursue the dream of building the best cars in the world," he says, "while being part of one of the most innovative companies in Silicon Valley."
