1987 Suzuki Samurai Hardtop on 2040-cars
Dammeron Valley, Utah, United States
No reserve auction for 1987 Suzuki Samurai, we purchased this vehicles several years ago when we lived off the grid. When we purchased it, the previous owner had started outfitting it for rock crawling and it had the original 4 cylinder engine and manual transmission which worked great in the summer. Our home was at 8500 ft elevation and in the winter we normally would get several feet of snow, in 2005 we had 22 ft of snow at our place. So we bought the Suzuki to put tracks on and use it to make the trek to our trucks which had to be parked 7 miles from where we lived in the winter as the road to our place was not plowed. The 4 cylinder engine just didn't have the power in the powder Utah is famous for, and when the manual transmission was shifted all momentum was lost. So we had a 4 wheel drive outfit in St George, UT, install a Gran Vitara V6 and automatic transmission. This worked very well and we were very comfortable going back and forth to our trucks regardless of how much snow we had. We've since moved out of the mountains and have no need for the little Samurai, we sold the tracks and now are selling it. It has the original transfer case and the front axle is manually locked when 4 wheel drive is needed, the rear is not locked. The CB antenna has a cable inside the Suzuki which is several feet long and it will reach any point inside the cab easily. We put new carpet up front, the original carpet/mat is in the rear. I don't believe the front bucket seats are the originals, but they are very comfortable and we put new seat covers on them, the seat foam is in very good condition and the seat adjustments work very well. I believe the rear seat is the original seat and cover, the rear carpet/mat and seat saw very little use and are in excellent condition. The previous owner told me the axle ratio was 4:11, but I've never verified that, but in low range with the tracks on there was nothing that this rig would not climb, it was awesome! The previous owner also had foam installed in most of the recesses of the body, wasn't really sure of why he did this, but there are no rattles and it's easy to stay warm in cold weather. The previous owner was from Arizona, so the Samurai has always been in a desert environment, no rust underneath, solid floors, all sheet metal in great shape.
It's a clean rig, engine runs great, the starter switch developed a problem so instead of replacing the switch and then having to re-key everything we just put in a starter button. So you turn the key on, then hit the button and it fires right up. The tires are in excellent shape, glass is all good. The paint on the exterior is newer, the inside is in decent shape showing normal wear and tear. We also were extremely frustrated with the original hood release, so we removed that and installed the hold downs you see on the front of the hood. The rear glass is tinted, the tint was too dark to pass inspection on the front door windows so had to remove it. The sunroof works fine and does not leak, and the Owners Manual and wiring diagrams for the installation of the Vitara V6 are included. There is a piece of trim missing in front of the passenger side rear wheel flare, and there is a small dent about the size of a 50 cent piece above where that trim is missing along the rear fender flare between 1 and 2 o'clock, you can see it in the close up of the passenger side picture. The shop that installed the V6 marked up the diagrams to show all of the connections they made to the original wiring in the Suzuki. It has a new Gran Vitara radiator in it, and there is an electric fan on a switch for the radiator. We've driven it around where we are and have not had to switch the fan on as it runs at the normal temperature without the fan. This Suzuki Samurai is sold as-is, where-is, the Buyer is responsible for transportation/shipping cost and arrangements. We will be available for the vehicle pick up, but will need to have the transporter schedule the pick up with us. The Buyer must deposit a non-refundable $500 deposit within 24 hours of the close of the auction, and the balance must be received within 5 business days of the close of auction and be made with a certified check that must clear our bank before the vehicle is released. There is no warranty or guarantee expressed or implied, we have a clear title in hand, the vehicle has not been registered for highway use for several years, but we filed a non-op with the State of Utah..I've described the vehicle as accurately as possible, we buy and sell quite a bit on eBay, including buying and selling several vehicles, we describe what we sell and disclose everything as we would like someone to do for us when we are buying. Please ask all questions before bidding, please do not bid if you cannot complete the purchase. Thanks for looking! |

Junkyard Gem: 2000 Suzuki Esteem Wagon
Fri, May 26 2023GM began selling Americans the Suzuki Cultus with Chevrolet Sprint badges in the 1985 model year, with the following generation of Cultus becoming the Geo (and, a bit later, Chevrolet) Metro. Suzuki began selling the Cultus as the Swift over here starting in 1990, then enlarged that car's platform to create the bigger Cultus Crescent five years later. This car first showed up in American Suzuki showrooms as the 1995 Esteem, and a wagon version arrived for 1998. Most of the Esteem longroofs disappeared from our roads long ago, but I was able to find this high-mile 2000 model in a Northern California car graveyard. The Esteem was available in the United States through 2002, after which it was replaced by the Aerio. Since station wagons were falling out of favor in a hurry with American car shoppers by that point, the Aerio wasn't available as a wagon; Suzuki buyers here who insisted on a small cargo hauler in 2003 either had to move up to the bigger Forenza wagon or join the SUV craze by getting a Vitara. All that was in the future when this car was first sold, though. It's a base-grade GL 1.8 model with no options that I can find, and its MSRP was $13,399. That's about $23,959 in 2023 dollars. The 2000-2002 Esteem wagon was forced to compete for sales against the bigger and more powerful Daewoo Nubira wagon, which had a menacingly similar price tag ($14,160 in 2000, or $25,320 after inflation). Hyundai was in the final year of selling a wagon version of the Elantra here in 2000, and its price was a mere $12,499 ($22,350 today). Ford was asking $15,380 for its cheapest 2000 Focus wagon ($27,501 now), while Saturn offered the SW2 wagon for $14,290 ($25,552 in 2023 bucks). What all those affordable small wagons had in common was a five-speed manual transmission as base equipment, and that's what this car has. A four-speed automatic added $1,000 ($1,788 today) to the cost of a new 2000 Esteem. This car came with a DOHC 1.8-liter four-cylinder rated at 122 horsepower and 117 pound-feet. Not exciting by 21st-century standards, but enough to keep driving misery at bay in a 2,359-pound wagon. This car's owner or owners took good care of it, and it rewarded them by driving 237,255 miles during its 23 years on the road. The interior still looks good, which is typical of high-mile cars I find in these places. A car owner who keeps the upholstery in good shape also tends to perform all the maintenance on the dot.
Suzuki posts 46% drop in first-quarter profit on slowing India demand
Mon, Aug 5 2019TOKYO — Suzuki on Monday reported a 46.2% fall in first-quarter operating profit, hurt by lower output at home as it improves its inspection systems, and falling demand in India, its biggest market. Japan's fourth-largest automaker posted an operating profit of 62.7 billion yen (GBP487 million) for the April-June quarter, down from 116.5 billion yen a year earlier and below a mean forecast of 69.09 billion from eight analysts, according to Refinitiv. Suzuki reaffirmed its forecast for full-year operating profit to come in at 330 billion yen, up 1.7% from the year ended March 2019. Suzuki, known for its Swift and Baleno compact models, is bracing for subdued growth this year in India, where roughly one in two cars sold carries its brand. The company stuck to a forecast for vehicle sales to increase slightly on the year, but conceded that it may need to trim its forecasts in the coming months as slowing economic growth and stricter emissions standards could dent sales. Slowing profit growth could hamper its ability to invest in and develop lower-emissions vehicles and on-demand transportation services necessary to survive the technological upheaval currently underway in the global auto industry. The automaker has long acknowledged that it cannot shoulder the costs of developing electric vehicles and self-driving cars on its own, and has turned to Toyota to supply Suzuki vehicles with its gasoline hybrid systems.
Kayaba, Sumitomo to pay millions for price-fixing in US
Sat, Sep 19 2015Kayaba Industry Co, which does business in the US as suspension parts maker KYB, and Sumitomo Electric Industries are facing payments in the millions to settle price-fixing cases about the components that they make. As part of the Department of Justice's ongoing crackdown of price fixing in the auto industry, KYB agreed to pay $62 million and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to set the cost of shock absorbers from the mid '90s through 2012. The company allegedly worked with co-conspirators to keep the cost of the parts high, and those components then made it into vehicles from Honda, Kawasaki, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota. "Any collusive agreement among competitors to restrict price competition undercuts our free enterprise system and violates the law," said Carter M. Stewart, US Attorney of the Southern District of Ohio, in the DoJ's announcement. Over the past few years, the DoJ has brought cases against 37 parts suppliers and 55 executives, leading to over $2.6 billion in fines. The investigations haven't always been so successful – some of the Japanese execs fled from the US to avoid prosecution. Critics allege that price fixing is simply how business is done. According to Automotive News, Sumitomo Electric Industries is also facing a $50 million settlement in a civil lawsuit that's related to price fixing of parts like wiring harnesses and heater control panels. The plaintiffs include owners and dealers that purchased vehicles with these parts. The company asserts that the violations are from before 2010, and it now has different process in place to avoid further violations. KYB Agrees to Plead Guilty and Pay $62 Million Criminal Fine for Fixing Price of Shock Absorbers Kayaba Industry Co. Ltd., dba KYB Corporation (KYB) has agreed to plead guilty and to pay a $62 million criminal fine for its role in a conspiracy to fix the price of shock absorbers installed in cars and motorcycles sold to U.S. consumers. According to charges filed today, KYB conspired from the mid-1990s until 2012 to fix the prices of shock absorbers sold to Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (manufacturer of Subaru vehicles), Honda Motor Co. Ltd., Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd., Nissan Motor Company Ltd., Suzuki Motor Corporation and Toyota Motor Company, including their subsidiaries in the United States.
