2008 Suzuki Sx4 Touring / Road Trip Edition with AWD and automatic transmission.  We got it from a dealer when it had 26k on it and it’s the version with just about all the available bells & whistles.  This is an awesome car with no mechanical problems whatsoever and lots of miles left to go -  I would prefer to keep it forever but I have twin babies on the way in the Spring and I have given up on the dream of fitting them and my 7-year-old and my wife and me and all our stuff into this car.

The Good:

- Well-maintained car with regular synthetic oil changes since we bought it.  I can provide maintenance records.

- Highly reliable - we just it bring it in for regular maintenance … tires, alignments, brakes, etc.

- Switch lets you toggle between AWD when you need it and FWD when you’d rather save gas.

- Excellent on gas.  Fueleconomy.gov says 21mpg city/ 28 hwy/ 24 combined for the AWD but that sounds lower than the reality, probably because this car has the switch… it tacks on a few more for the FWD version.

- Super-safe car: Stability control (that works great by the way - you can really feel it and the indicator light comes on when it kicks in), dual front airbags, ABS brakes.

- Great in snow (even better in the snow than my old Subaru Forester was).  High clearance for a small car.  “Lock” button keeps all 4 wheels in sync temporarily for when you need to dig out of snow - that works awesome.  This thing barrels right through the plow-in of my driveway.

- Surprisingly roomy inside both for your people and your stuff for a car this size.  Rear seat folds down (both halves separately) for when you need to haul extra stuff.

- 2 remote starters - great for winter mornings.

- A/C blows super-cold.

- Power-everything: windows, locks, mirrors (and mirrors heat up with rear defrost)

- Cruise control

- Click into 3rd gear and back on-the-fly... good for hills.

- Rear wiper

- Really nice sound system: 6-cd player, AM/FM stereo, XM/Sirius satellite radio ready

- Audio controls on steering wheel

- Tinted rear windows and rear windshield

- Clean, never-smoked-in

- Just passed NYS inspection in November

- Clear title in hand

- I will provide auto-check report (similar to carfax) if you need one

The Bad:

- The accident that you’ll see reported on carfax/autocheck: a slowly-moving car that was trying to park bumped into the open front driver’s side door, just enough to cause it to need to be replaced.  The new door (about a year old) works perfectly and there is no residual effect from that.

- Somebody sideswiped the car on the driver’s side a few years ago when it was parked.  I didn’t bother to report or repair the damage.  There’s a small dent with some rust and scraping (see photo) on the rear left fender leftover from that.  No frame or wheel damage - just cosmetic.

- I bumped a wall during a terrible parking maneuver and the little black plastic lining (not sure what it’s called) on the front right popped off (see photo).  I still have it.  It comes free with your purchase of the car!  The part of that lining that is still on the car has a couple of cracks around the front.

- In a separate but equally terrible parking maneuver, that lining got slightly loosened on the rear right of the car.  No structural damage.

- In a less-than heroic attempt to replace my own rear-right tail light, I managed to crack the red plastic cover.  I glued/taped it backed together with a repair kit (see photo).  It passes inspection and for about 2 years now it has held fine and all lights are working.

- The rear tires are running low on tread (the fronts have a long way left to go).

- The tire-pressure sensor is broken so the light for that is often on even when the tires are full.   This does not cause inspection to fail.

- Center console mini-storage between the two front seats has always been a little loose and getting looser.

-  My only pet-peeve: the gas tank is too small - it only only takes 10 gallons so you need to keep filling up.  The cool thing is it tells you how many miles you have left to drive on your tank.

Meet the Jeep Wrangler's tiny Japanese doppelganger, the Suzuki Jimny

Wed, Aug 23 2017

We're all eagerly anticipating the 2018 Jeep Wrangler, but it's not the only two-door, body-on-frame off-roader coming out in the near future. Suzuki has its own on the way by the name of Jimny (no, that's not a typo). Long ago, we received the Jimny here in the United States as the eminently capable, though tipsy, Samurai. The Samurai was followed here by the more civilized Sidekick/Tracker, which eventually took on its original name of Vitara. But overseas, the rugged, truck-like Samurai survived as the Jimny. This newest version looks to retain much of its predecessors' capability. In addition to the body-on-frame chassis, it features a solid rear axle. Odds are that it will continue to offer a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range, as with the current one. We can't quite tell if it will still have a solid front axle, though. Styling-wise, the new Jimny does seem to have tougher, chunkier looks than the current one, pictured above. The corners have been squared up, and hard creases added to the flanks. The wheel wells are now more square and look to have bigger flares. We're also noticing some retro touches such as the roof that isn't flush with the rest of the body. The taillights mounted in the rear bumper are also reminiscent of the old Samurai. As nifty as the little Jimny is, we can safely say that we won't be getting it here — Suzuki doesn't sell cars here anymore. But even if Suzuki were still operating in the U.S., we probably wouldn't get the Jimny. It would probably be too crude for most buyers, and it could be tricky to get it to pass safety regulations. Its tall, narrow shape also could be rollover prone, and Suzuki wouldn't want to go through another rollover controversy. But hey, in roughly 25 years, you can import one of these if you really want. Junkyard Gem: 2010 Suzuki Kizashi SE

Sun, Aug 29 2021

American Suzuki Motor Corporation filed for bankruptcy in 2012, and new Suzuki-badged cars stopped being sold here the following year (meanwhile, Suzuki went on to create one of the biggest-selling cars in its home market). While many of the United States-market Suzukis of the previous decade had been Daewoos beneath the emblems, the Kizashi sedan was designed and manufactured entirely by Suzuki. There were high hopes – at first – that it would revive the brand's American fortunes. Here's a first-model-year example, found in a San Francsico Bay Area self-service yard a few months back. The word Kizashi means "something great is coming" in Japanese, but the Great Recession and the decreasing popularity of non-truck-shaped new vehicles in the United States kept sales of these cars low (even as Monster Tajima broke the ten-minute barrier in a Suzuki at Pikes Peak). You could buy a new Kizashi here until American Suzuki folded its tent and left in 2013, leaving just two-wheeled Suzukis available here for highway use. That was unfortunate because the Kizashi provided a lot of value for the price. This Kizashi SE had an MSRP starting at $21,499 (about $27,085 in 2021 dollars), and it had a pleasant interior and a bunch of unexpected standard features. You got keyless ignition, power seats with memory, 17" alloy wheels and a pretty decent seven-speaker audio system with USB and Bluetooth inputs (both of which were still uncommon in lower-priced cars at the time). If you upgraded to the GTS or SLS trim levels ($22,499 and $24,399, respectively), you got goodies including a thumping 10-speaker Rockford Fosgate audio system, a power sunroof and 18-inch wheels. But unless you were selling Hayabusas or KingQuads, 2010 wasn't a great time to have a Suzuki sign in front of your American showroom. The days of Geo- and Chevrolet-badged Suzukis roaming every American road ended with the Metro and Tracker; by the end, only the Kizashi, SX4 and Grand Vitara remained here. It appears that a Ford dealership in Pennsylvania sold this car at some point prior to its migration west. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder made 185 horsepower, better than its four-cylinder Mazda6 and Altima rivals. Smaller-displacement versions of the J24B engine went into the Aerio, Esteem, Sidekick, Tracker, and Vitara; the Grand Vitara got the 2.4. A six-speed manual transmission was available in the Kizashi's other trim levels, but SE buyers had to take the CVT. This content is hosted by a third party.

Suzuki teases iK-2 and iM-4 concepts set to debut at Geneva

Sat, Feb 7 2015

While it may be true that Suzuki no longer sells its models in the US, the Japanese brand is still motoring along and quite popular in the rest of the world, including Europe. The Japanese company just teased two concepts to premiere at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, but hasn't revealed much about them yet. First up is the iM-4 concept (pictured above), which Suzuki describes as an "iconic mini 4x4." Given that the next-gen Jimny (better known in the US as the Samurai) is supposed to go on sale in 2017, this vehicle might be the first future glimpse of the little offroader. The company reportedly wants to keep the new model close in spirit to the current one, while updating its aging design. The iK-2 concept (right inset) is a bit more mysterious. Suzuki calls it "an ideal compact sized car." Based on the brand's European range, it could preview a look for a future version of the Swift. We should know much more about both of them when the Geneva show begins in March. SUZUKI UNVEILS iK-2 AND iM-4 CONCEPT MODELS AT THE 85TH GENEVA MOTOR SHOW 06/02/15 Suzuki Motor Corporation will display two world-premiere concept models at the 85th Geneva Motor Show next month. iK-2 The iK-2 is an ideal compact sized car, developed with an innovative theme of "Harmonised Force". By combining all of the key elements expected in a car of this size the new model raises compact car values to the limit. iM-4 The iM-4 is an iconic mini 4x4 developed with a concept theme of "Shape the Inspiration". It is an all-new proposal from Suzuki, packed with its compact 4x4 DNA and new technologies as well as distinctive styling that will give real inspiration to drivers. Detailed information will be disclosed at the Suzuki press conference, scheduled on Tuesday, 3rd March 2015 at 11:15 am , On stand 4251, in hall 4 A special website is available on http://www.globalsuzuki.com/geneva2015/
