Day 1: Arrival in Buenos Aires | Subarus in South America

I'm writing this at 1:00 AM on Tuesday from my hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I've had maybe three hours of sleep since I woke up on Sunday morning. As the locals say, estoy agotado. But I'm also stoked. Because later today, I'll be in Patagonia. Holy crap. As senior producer Chris McGraw explains in the video above, getting to Patagonia is no easy task. We flew from Detroit to Atlanta (two hours), and then Atlanta to Buenos Aires (ten hours). Rather than continuing right away, we met up with the rest of our group of automotive journalists and Subaru reps, explored the city a little, and had a lovely dinner. It's funny, neither Chris or I have seen a single Subaru on the trip just yet, but that'll all change tomorrow when we meet our fleet of Crosstreks, Foresters, and Outbacks in El Calafate. 2015 Subaru WRX caught testing in US on Mulholland

In April, we got our first glimpse at the 2015 2015 Subaru WRX - the car was caught in STI form in photos and in motion running around Germany's infamous Nürburgring. That's all well and good, but obviously Subaru will sell a good number of the hotter Impreza models here in the United States, and thus, it's nice to now see a video of the next WRX testing out in California, albeit in what looks to be non-STI form.

And that's quite appropriate, since the video clearly shows the now de-winged WRX prototype testing on the well-known - you guessed it - Mulholland Highway. Just like before, we're disappointed that the prototypes spotted testing don't appear to be as bold and beautiful as the WRX Concept that Subaru brought to this year's New York Auto Show. Nevertheless, we'll hold our final judgments until the camouflage is peeled away.

Subaru to stop building Camry for Toyota in the US

It was back in 2007 that Subaru of Indiana Automotive, under contract from Subaru minority shareholder Toyota, built the first Toyota Camry at its plant in Lafayette, Indiana. Rumblings of the end of that contract work have been around for a while, as Subaru talked of expanding capacity to build more units and add a line for the Impreza, and Toyota talked of moving Camry production to its Georgetown, KY plant. The news was official internally last November when SIA Executive Vice President Tom Easterday told the Louisville Courier-Journal that Camry production would end. Now, Automotive News reports that both automakers have admitted publicly that the end will come in 2016.
SIA currently has a 170,000-unit capacity devoted to the home-brand Legacy and Outback models, while a $400-million expansion increases that to 300,000 units to prepare the facility for Impreza production in two years. Freeing up the 100,000 units of production devoted to the Camry means a 400,000-unit capability, which is far more than Subaru needs at the moment, but the Toyota exit will allow it to expand any way it sees fit. Subaru has said it will absorb the workers on the Camry line and no jobs will be lost, the mayor of Lafayette saying the development could change the timetable for the expansion.
