What you find with our 2009 Subaru Tribeca is a vehicle that carries its size well, offers unique styling and doesn't have to be apologetic for sloppy reflexes. It's a big, family-friendly machine that is thoughtfully packaged, rather than being a V8 stuffed in a ladder frame and topped with an SUV body. A 2009 redesign means our Tribeca is simply better than the older models....a newer 3.6-liter flat-six engine is more than half a liter larger with power up from 245 horsepower to 256, along with 247 lb.ft of torque. Not only does the engine get better fuel economy in real-world driving at 16/21 mpg, it also runs on regular unleaded gas versus the old engine's premium thirst. It's an All-wheel drive with 8.4 inches of ground clearance, but real off-roading isn't the goal here.....just all-weather performance. Our 5-passenger is nicely equipped with a lengthy list of features and conveniences including power seats, AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo, heated seats, 4-wheel ABS brakes, adjustable steering wheel, and keyless entry. The driving position and provisions are comfortable in that familiar, friendly Subaru way. Interior space is well-utilized in our 5-passenger two-row,with a good amount of cargo area behind the seats. The 2nd row is much more accommodating without a third row nipping at its heels. This vehicle is long on appeal. It'd be a great choice for families, singles, retirees, just anyone looking for capable, all-wheel drive transportation and a thoroughly accommodating ride. Toyota FT-86 Open Concept leaves us feeling flushed

Wed, 20 Nov 2013

When last we checked in on our topless would-be hero, the Toyota FT-86 convertible had been reportedly placed on "indefinite hold." That was back in early October, not long after Toyota had trotted out the rear-wheel-drive canvasback to Scion dealers as a possible future product carrot if they decided not to turn in their franchises. And yet, we're here at the Tokyo Motor Show, where Toyota has taken the time to at least repaint the FT-86 Open Concept in "Flash Red," if not build a whole other car (the original Geneva showcar was white). It's enough to make our heads spin like a teenager on the verge of a breakup. Will they? Won't they?
At this point, we still don't know any more than you do - the last word we heard out of Toyota was not encouraging, although the story was that the program could still be fast-tracked if management had a change of heart. As the car has never been seen before in Japan, perhaps Toyota is merely extending its domestic audience a courtesy view before it lines this showcar in mothballs, or maybe they're still trying to make a decision on its fate and gauging public reaction on the homefront.
Interestingly, in a new story published today, Automotive News quotes Subaru brand boss Yasuyuki Yoshinaga downplaying the likelihood of a production model, saying flatly "We make the car, so if we don't make it, it can't happen." The executive went on to note, "Our engineering department told me that losing the entire roof requires a complete redesign of the structure. It would need a big change." Given that such a car would probably trade in rather small volumes, that sounds like a significant hurtle.

Should Subaru stay niche or go mainstream? [w/poll]

Sun, 11 Aug 2013

Out of all the automakers doing business in the US, Subaru is the one that has carved out the most interesting niche for itself in the minds and lifestyles of buyers. Outdoorsy types, dog lovers and active families alike flock to Subaru's rugged nature and all-wheel-drive utility - and they're fiercely loyal, which is probably why Subaru has become a success story.
But Subaru is still a relatively small player in the US market, and with recent profits surging, parent company Fuji Heavy Industries is facing a dilemma: continue on with the successful niche market Subaru has carved out for itself, or attempt to go mainstream and give big players like Nissan and Toyota a run for their money. According to Carscoop, Japan Times and Bloomberg News are reporting that Fuji Heavy is beginning discussions this month to determine which direction Subaru will take.

Subaru unveils catchily named WRX STI tS Type RA in Japan

Tue, 02 Jul 2013

We feel safe in saying it's time for Subaru to step away from the keyboard for a spell. The company just unveiled this new WRX STI tS Type RA in Japan, and while the car features all sorts of tricks to help it stand out from the rest of the WRX rabble, it also boasts a name that looks like the product of a good old fashioned QWERTY Hulk smash. Nomenclature aside, this WRX STI features a revised suspension with tweaked springs and dampers as well as a faster steering ratio, Brembo brakes and a front strut tower brace.
JDM buyers can pick between the ever-sexy (if loud) Tangerine Orange Pearl paint seen here, Satin White Pearl or Blue Mica. There's also available NBR Challenge Package, complete with a set of Recaro front seats, a few carbon fiber aero bits and 18-inch BBS forged wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE070 rubber. How's that for delicious?
Subaru is only planning to crank out 300 WRX STI tS Type RA units, two-thirds of which will carry the NBR goodies.
