Should Smart bring the Forfour to the USA?

Mon, Mar 14 2016

With sales not improving much even with the new Fortwo, should Smart bring the other car it sells around the world? It's called the Forfour because, well, it's for four people. Smart has said it would cannibalize the Fortwo's sales, but sales are money and the automaker should be happy if it can sell more cars and have a real presence in the market. Many people say the only reason they don't buy the Fortwo is the lack of a backseat or because with the price range of the tiny car you can get something bigger. Those issues are resolved with the Forfour. Besides, the USA market is showing some willingness to accept small hatchbacks if they offer good value for the money or are fun to drive that's the reason Fiat came back to the USA with the 500, Chevrolet sells the Spark and Sonic, Ford offers the Fiesta, Toyota imports the Yaris, the Honda Fits is in its third generation, that's why Hyundai keep selling the Accent and Kia the Rio, and Nissan brought the Versa Note, even Mitsubishi sells in decent numbers the dull looking Mirage. The Smart Forfour would be a nice addition to the segment. And an interesting one too as it would be the only one with the engine located in the back, that's right, in the back, below the cargo area. Power is provided by the same engine that moves the Fortwo: 0.9L turbo 3 cylinder with 89 HP, the transmission can be a 5 speed manual or a 6 speed double clutch automatic. Now let's think for a minute: manual, RWD and rear-engined...sounds like fun. While the Fortwo is a niche car bought only for the enthusiasts, ads companies or Car2Go, the Forfour belongs to a real segment with plenty of competition that don't offer the funky style and other features the Smart does. So, the question is: should Smart bring the Forfour to the USA? Let us know in the comments below. Image Credit: Alfonso Rascon smart smart forfour open road

Smart Forease+ adds a fabric roof to electric speedster concept

Sun, Mar 3 2019

We aren't sure what the Smart Forease+ previews, if anything, but the 21-year-old microcar brand is bringing the diminutive concept to the Geneva Motor Show. This is an update on the Forease - no "+" - concept it debuted as last year's Paris Motor Show. The big change is that the Forease+ has a speedster-type roof, consisting of a hard fabric shell with a soft fabric cover. The removable roof in a "rough amber" color locks into the top rail of the chopped windscreen and at two openings on the rear corner. There's nowhere to store the fabric expanse inside the coupe, so going without means trusting the weather. As with last year's Forease, the Forease+ has no side or rear windows. Nor does it have any climate control; the vent housings remain, but they are filled with supplementary gauges like a battery charge display and a clock. With the supplemental roof, Smart says the Forearse+ is "more than suited to all weather conditions in cities." Not much else has changed from the last concept. The green highlights in the Paris example have turned to amber, such as in the front vents and the speaker grilles. The tri-LED headlights are exposed, no longer behind glass. The instrument panel is stitched up in amber Nappa leather. And the seat belts are illuminated. The Forease+ is based on the production Smart EQ, and we wish we could see something good coming from it. As the brand transitions to an all-electric lineup and figures out a future potentially without Renault, what's one to do with another impractical-looking exercise that "develops the predecessor's minimalistic idea?"

Brabus-tuned Smart on the way, just not for America

Fri, Jan 22 2016

At this very moment, one of our intrepid editors is traipsing about Spain behind the wheel of the new Smart ForTwo Cabriolet. While you wait (eagerly, we're sure) for our First Drive review, there's another snippet of Smart news floating about the net: Top Gear is reporting that Brabus will once again turn its tuning talents to the tiny ForTwo. And that's absolutely correct – a Brabus-tuned ForTwo is on the way, in case those spy shots from December 2014 didn't make that obvious enough. But that vehicle won't be coming to the US, a Mercedes-Benz USA rep told Autoblog. Instead, we'll be getting a sporty appearance pack that may or may not wear Brabus branding. Based on a couple rounds of spy photos, we're expecting a pretty normal stylistic upgrade. The front and rear fascias will be updated, with sportier grilles at the front. The sills will also get a sportier look, and there will be larger wheels, too. Changes in the cabin are more difficult to predict. We can speculate on what the new appearance pack will contain, but not when it will arrive. It sounds to us like the kind of thing that will arrive at the start of a new model year, so potential ForTwo owners will probably be waiting for the 2017 to get a sportier looking city car.
