Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ successor canceled?

Rumors indicate that the Toyota 86 is done for. Japanese Nostalgic Car is quoting Japanese sources as saying Toyota and Subaru have parted ways regarding the 86 and that the current car's replacement is off the table. According to JNC, the Japanese magazine Best Car is readying a report that the 86/BRZ successor has been canceled. JNC also considers the fact that in Japan, there will be a four-cylinder, 197-horsepower version of the new Supra, ready to continue where the 86 will leave the market. Back in 2016 the automaker seemingly confirmed that a replacement for the rear-drive car was under development, but plans can change and with a cheaper Supra version for sale in markets outside the U.S., we have to wonder if the 86 replacement has been shelved. The 86, while balanced, has only received mild enhancements and not a lot of extra power during its near-decade long time on the market, and it isn't such a strong seller that it would necessarily merit the effort of Toyota developing a successor on its own, particularly without the help of a partner like Subaru or BMW. At the same time, Autocar quotes Toyota boss Akio Toyoda on the Supra: "At the end of the day, is there anything better than a tight rear-wheel-drive sports car? I hope this won't be the last Toyota sports car you see from us in the future." While that is far from a solid statement of Toyota's future intent, it paves the way to offerings below the Supra, and shows how much the company boss cares about driver involvement. There is a distinct possibility that the company will re-introduce the MR2 as an electrified, rear-drive sports car – which could still be a joint venture with Subaru, as Japanese Nostalgic Car theorizes. Scion styles up the FR-S with 'Release Series 2.0'

Scion's long-running Release Series of special edition vehicles has just added its second FR-S, with the new Release Series 2.0. While the first special edition FR-S, which debuted at the 2014 New York Auto Show, placed a serious emphasis on sportiness, the second is a more balanced, perhaps more mature special edition. Release Series 1.0 had loud yellow paint, a lowered ride height, and chunky 18-inch TRD wheels on low-profile tires. The new RS 2.0 changes things up: The ride height appears unchanged. In fact, there doesn't appear to be any suspension upgrade in play, period. And while the wheels are still painted black, these 17s ride on slightly more reasonable 45-series rubber, rather than the 40-series tires used on the 2014 model. There's still an upgraded body kit, but combined with the Lunar Storm White hue, it's a lot more subtle than last year's aggressive setup and Yuzu Yellow paint. Where Scion didn't do much to the FR-S's interior for the 2014 special edition, the RS 2.0 gets luxed up with heated, two-tone Alcantara/leather seats. The black-and-camel color scheme works well here, appearing not just on the seats but around the steering wheel, doors, and dash. All 1,000 special editions will come with HID headlights, LED running lights, push-button start, and dual-zone climate control. 2017 Toyota 86: The car so nice it's been rebadged twice

When the dust settles and the Scion brand is no more, the car we currently know as the Scion FR-S will be rebadged. Again. If you remember the excitement that surrounded the Toyobaru/Subota rear-drive sports coupes' introduction, you'll recall that Scion's Subaru BRZ twin landed in here as the FR-S. That car, along with the new iA and iM, will get a stay of execution next year when the brand bids adieu. We know it will wear a Toyota badge in dealers from then on, and there's a good chance it will get the 86 badge European models wear. Toyota's version of the car goes by several different names depending on the market. It's only a Scion in North America, while it's sold as the Toyota 86 (in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South America, and South Africa), Toyota GT86 (in Europe and New Zealand again), and Toyota FT86 (in Nicaragua and Jamaica). The 86 part of the name is a nod to the rear-drive AE86 Corollas of the 1980s. That's a history lesson Toyota likely won't have to teach its core demographic. Then again, this car's core demographic probably already bought one. There's also a possibility that this car will get yet another name combination: Toyota FR-S. Buyers who were ordering badge-swap kits from overseas will save some money. Some enthusiast forums might need to change their names. And people visiting from Japan or Europe will feel a little more at home when they see a rear-drive Toyota sports car on the street.
