If you're looking for a very basic, fuel efficient car... this car is a good choice.

It's a small 4 cylinder engine so it's easy on gas, it's got a 5 speed manual transmission and has manual steering (not power steering). This makes it more difficult to turn the wheel when parked and driving at very low speeds, but also increases fuel efficiency about 3 miles per gallon because it uses less power.

Handy Man Special - Good Price

She's a solid car with low miles for the age, but definitely needs some TLC from the hands of a highly-skilled Technician or handy man.

I work at a repair shop and put a good bit of work into her... but I just don't have the time to work on it myself.

I replaced both front drive axles... the battery is less than 3 months old... all new front brakes: Pads, Rotors and both brake calipers... high-performance spark plugs and lifetime racing plug wires...

What it needs...

Maryland is one of the toughest inspection places so it will need a few things to pass inspection. Mainly a new muffler, the old one has a rust hole eaten into it. May also need new brake shoes and drums in the rear, did not get to take them apart but parts are extremely cheap for that.

It also needs the ceiling to be re-upholstered as the headliner tore. The parts can be bought for about $60 to do it yourself, or pay $200-$300 for a professional upholstery shop to do it (in MD)

The alignment is off pretty bad because it needs new tie rod ends and an alignment. One tie rod end comes with the car, I never had time to install it. Also will need lower control arms - At least 1 on the driver side because the ball joint boot is busted and that will fail MD state inspection unfortunately. Part is cheap though, $60 online.

If you live outside of MD, you may not have to worry about it because your state laws are probably not as strict as MD. The control arms do not affect drive-ability at all.

It also burns oil. It needs new valve guides and valve oil seals. The parts are extremely cheap, but the job has to be done by someone who knows cars pretty well. Otherwise, it may be less hassle to simply buy a re-manufactured cylinder head and install it. Alot of labor involved, but will last another 100k or so. Could be attained pretty cheaply from a junk yard as well.

It also has one of the reflector pieces on the driver side rear off. Maybe $12 part, I just haven't really looked for one.

The body paint is peeling on the front of the hood, and on the roof as well. Not unusual for a 95.

Otherwise, the car does start and runs fine. I put about 1,000 miles on it in the last 3 months driving about 40 miles a day and she never left me stranded.

If you want a fixer-upper to fix up little by little just to get around, or looking for a project car... this is great. A lot can be done to these little Saturns to make them more performance-based. I just didn't have the time to do it.

Thanks!

NHTSA could add 1M cars to GM recall

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration may expand a recall campaign for faulty brake lamps. The agency is currently looking into complaints that certain 2004-2011 Chevrolet Malibu models as well as some 2007-2009 Saturn Aura sedans may have brake lights that do not illuminate when the driver presses the pedal. Alternatively, the lamps may also illuminate without input from the driver. General Motors recalled 8,000 Pontiac G6 models from the 2005 model year for the same problem, and NHTSA is currently investigating whether to add 550,000 more G6 models built between 2005 and 2009 to the list for the same issue.
In addition, investigators are currently examining 97 complaints from Malibu and Aura owners with the same trouble. If NHTSA adds those models to the recall campaign, more than one million units could be covered. GM, meanwhile, says there have been no accidents or injuries as a result of the problem.

Honda wins Commercial of the Decade, but not for the ad you think [w/VIDEO]

Honda's Commercial of the Decade: "Grrr" - Click above to watch video
The mad men at Adweek recently voted for the Commercial of the Decade (Super Bowl commercials not included) and Honda took top honors over memorable ads from the last ten years by companies like Nike, Budweiser and Sony. That's not a big surprise considering Honda often puts a huge amount of effort into its on-air spots. However, the Japanese automaker didn't win for the commercial you might have expected: "Cog." Though Honda's famous commercial that breaks down a European Accord Tourer into a Rube Goldberg-esque machine was also a finalist, it was beaten by another Honda commercial called "Grrr" that's narrated by Garrison Keillor of all people. You've probably never seen it, but you can after the jump.
Volkswagen also made the list of finalists, but the particular ad chosen out of all the comical VW ads we've seen was unexpected as well. Most surprising carmaker with a commercial in the finals: Saturn. Who knew...

GM recalling another 2.7 million vehicles in five separate campaigns

Thu, 15 May 2014

The recalls keep rolling in from General Motors, evidently keen to avoid repeating the mistakes of the ignition-switch debacle and clean house. This time they're all coming at once, with five separate recalls announced together covering approximately 2.7 million vehicles.
The largest of the five actions involves over 2.4 million units of the previous-generation Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura in order to fix brake light wiring harness, which have been found to be susceptible to corrosion. The recall is separate from the 56k Aura sedans which GM recently recalled over faulty shift cables, not to mention the previous massive recall of 1.3 million vehicles - some of them the same models - but appears to have resulted from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation that started with the G6 almost a year ago.
The second-largest campaign involves the 2014 Chevy Malibu, specifically those fitted with GM's 2.5-liter engine and stop/start system, approximately 140,000 examples of which has been found to have problematic brakes. The issue does not appear to be connected to the recall of 8k Malibu and Buick LaCrosse sedans (also involving brake woes) which we reported upon last week. Four crashes have been reported in such models, but GM admits it's not yet clear if the problem was a contributing factor in the accidents.
