1988 Saab 900 Turbo Convertible 2-door 2.0l on 2040-cars
Portland, Oregon, United States
I've had this classic Saab since 1999. It was my dream car since college and I've had many great years with it.
Runs and Drives Great, Everything works except cruise control - the AC blows cold (refitted with 134a), the power antenna goes up, it has the original Clarion cassette with EQ, I replaced the speakers a few years ago. All power windows go up and down, the top works perfectly, including the drivers side heated seat I installed. It also comes with the aftermarket boot cover and carrying case. I bought the car in 1999 with 93K miles. It now has 130K. Low miles for it's age. I just installed a new battery and fuel pump. The top was replaced about 5 years ago, the windshield was replaced in 2001, less than 5K miles on new tires, the leather is original and in good shape except the drivers seat that I recovered with a donor passenger seat from a 9000 about 5 years ago. I upgraded to the SPG style performance body kit and wheels to give it the sportier SPG look and burled walnut dash cover. All in all it's a nice looking car and shows pride of ownership but it also shows its years in places. The paint was faded and cracked on the hood and trunk. I repainted them but it's not the best prep job. It also has normal wear for it's age; chips, scratches a ding on the passenger door (see picture) and the clear coat on the bumpers has faded a bit. It would really look sharp with a new coat of paint. It has newer carpeted mats but the original carpet is worn on the drivers side and shows its age in places. The dash has some cracks. The fuel gauge and speedo work but they jump around a bit. I've stored it inside for most of it's time in my care with the exception of last year. My father passed away and we had to make room in the garage for stuff we were clearing out of his house. The power steering fluid had a slow leak last time I drove it but it seems fine now. The NADA Classic retail for this car ranges from $4425 to $10,100 and they're starting to go up in value. I wish I could keep it but I just have to much stuff. I need to make room and let someone else enjoy this timeless Swedish classic. This is a great car in original condition with some nice added upgrades. It needs nothing to be a dependable daily driver and a fun summer car. It's not a show car by any means. If you have any questions or need additional information please let me know before you bid. This car retailed $29,740 in 1988 and is still a lot of car for the money. This car is listed on craigslist locally so I reserve the right to end this auction early in accordance to ebay terms if the vehicle sells. |

Saab still alive and well at New Jersey dealership
Mon, Dec 29 2014We all know the Saab story: a niche automaker that just couldn't last in the quickening pace of an increasingly competitive industry, despite its loyal following. But just because the automaker has all but completely disappeared, it doesn't mean that the loyal following has as well. In fact Saab Automobiles Parts North America estimates there are some 450,000 Saabs still in use in the United States, and many of them are still die-hard brand faithful who are adamantly clinging to the bankrupt brand they love. And many of those loyal customers are still finding a home at Park Avenue Saab in Maywood, NJ. Although the Park Avenue Auto Group operates Acura, BMW and Lotus franchises, it hasn't given up on Saab just because the company isn't making any new cars anymore. Instead it's set up shop in an old Suzuki showroom and is building a growing list of Saab customers across New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania – parts of that list acquired from other, closed Saab dealers in the region. The dealership stocks spare parts and is ready to perform whatever service and maintenance existing Saab owners might need, but it's also still buying and selling Saabs: used models with low mileage and manufactured as close as possible to the end of production in 2011. So when an owner of an old Saab is ready to trade up, the dealership has something to offer. And many of those loyal customers, according to Automotive News, are willing to pay top dollar rather than switch to another brand. If and when a Saab owner needs to buy something newer – as most will have to – the dealer is ready to introduce them to a new Acura or BMW, but to date, very few have. That's why Park Avenue Saab still sells about 40 used Saabs every month to customers in the vicinity, across the country or even overseas. Between the sales and service departments, the dealership is still turning a brisk business, but unless NEVS, Mahindra or some other knight in shining armor swoops in and manages to do what GM and Spyker couldn't, the dealership's management know the business can't last forever.
Former Saab chairman Muller faces summons in tax inquiry
Thu, 23 May 2013Former Saab Chairman Victor Muller may be called in for questioning as part of an official inquiry into suspected tax evasion by three of the automaker's former executives. A prosecutor has officially named former CEO Jan-Ake Jonsson and two other executives in the investigation, and official court documents say that Muller will be called in by the Financial Crimes Unit. According to Reuters, prosecutors are currently looking into allegations that the executives worked to dodge taxes between 2010 and 2011, when the automaker finally went into bankruptcy.
The Truth About Cars reports the investigation may center around the $540,000 paid as consulting fees to Latin America Tug Holding NV, a company Muller owns. It's possible that the Swedish authorities believe the Saab executives were using the tug boat company as a tax haven, and that the automaker should have paid taxes and social security contributions on the money. Muller has not been charged.
Meanwhile, Muller is defending his earnings in a new interview with Automotive News. Having come under fire for his $773,000 salary at Saab, the Spyker CEO said his pay was commensurate with an executive running a company with 4,000 employees.
Junkyard Gem: 1987 Saab 900 4-Door Sedan
Sat, Jul 29 2023Saab sold the original 900 in the United States from the 1979 through 1993 model years (followed by another few years of Opel Vectra-based 900s), and most of the 900s you'll find today are the higher-end models with 16-valve engines and/or turbochargers. Last year in this series, we saw a 900 Turbo and a 900 Turbo Convertible in Colorado car graveyards, and now it's time to take a look at a used-up Colorado 900 with the base 8-valve engine and few extras. The cheapest new 1987 Saab available here was the base three-door hatchback with 5-speed manual transmission, which had an MSRP of $14,395 (about $39,497 in 2023 dollars). If you wanted a new 900 with four doors that year, the price of admission started at $14,805 ($40,622 after inflation). That's the car we've got here. The engine is a 2.0-liter SOHC slant-four, the direct descendant of the engine originally developed in partnership with Triumph for use in the Saab 99 and Triumph Dolomite. The Triumph TR7 used members of this engine family as well. This engine was rated at 110 horsepower and 118 pound-feet. The naturally-aspirated 16-valve version in the '87 900S made 125 horses, while the 900 Turbo had 160 horsepower. The automatic transmission cost an extra $430 (about $1,180 now); most 900 buyers chose the five-on-the-floor manual. In fact, I have never documented a junked 1979-1993 Saab 900 with an automatic. This one came close to the 175,000-mile mark during its life. The paint is somewhat faded, but the interior looks good for a car this age. Its owner or owners took good care of it. The body has a few dents but no rust worth mentioning. If it had been a 900S or a 900 Turbo, it would have had a better chance of avoiding this fate. Saab's innovative technology for 1987 starts at around $15,000 and goes up to the $20,000,000 Viggen (the fighter plane, not the later hot-rod 9-3 that borrowed the Viggen name).
