I am reluctantly selling this very rare and nicely restored Saab classic 99 GL. I have a small collection of classic cars and the warehouse where I've stored many of my cars for the past few years was recently sold. I am searching for alternative garage space but need to prepare by selling off some of my collection. This 99 is a great car that needs nothing and is ready to drive and show today.

This particular 99 GL was restored about three years ago just before being acquired by the previous owner. That owner used it only as a weekend car and it was always garaged. The odometer (and title) reads 55,126 actual miles but best guess from the previous owner is that actual mileage is now closer to 65,000 since the odometer stopped working in 2012. The speedometer is functional so it seems the gauge itself is most likely the issue. All other gauges including the clock are operable.

The engine is original to the car and runs like new...it's the very quick and responsive 2 liter fuel injected 4 cylinder that made the Saab 99 popular on the European road rally circuit in the 1970's. Saab originally sourced this engine from Triumph but during the early 1970's refined and built the engine so that by 1977 it was known to be both durable and reliable. I've never had to add oil and I only have a few sporadic drops on the garage floor. The restoration included new brakes. I just changed the oil/filter within the last 200 miles of driving. The 4-speed transmission has a new clutch and shifts as it should.

During the restoration two years ago the car was professionally repainted the original Saab Alpine White (more of a cream color). The interior is superb and was restored in the original dark brown cloth/vinyl combination with dark brown carpet and tan trim below the dash. The tan headliner is new (see photo). The dash is excellent but missing one vinyl trim piece so I added a custom fitted dash top cover. The dark brown carpet is excellent but could use a cleaning. While there is a rear antenna and speaker wiring to the rear deck lid there is no radio in the car. There is no a/c. Chrome and glass is very good all around and both windows crank easily up and down. A blue indoor car cover is included with the car.

The trunk is huge and has the original jack, carpet and full size spare. *The previous owner replaced the original wheels with a later set of model 99 turbo "inca" wheels on new radials which really set the car off. If desired I can provide the new owner with the original set of Saab steel wheels with hard to find chrome hub caps on a set of nearly new radial tires.

A few months ago the seat bottom on the drivers seat sagged a bit and I suspect that one of the seat frame straps either broke or came loose... I placed a support under the seat and all is well, but it will need attending- or maybe you'll think it's just fine as-is.

The trunk and engine compartment was not repainted during the restoration but, as you can see in the photo's, the color match is perfect and it shows how clean the car was before being repainted. While essentially rust free, there was a small 2 inch area at the bottom lip of the drivers door near the rubber trim that was repaired.

You'll be hard pressed to find another Saab 99 in this condition at any price. It's the perfect affordable and reliable classic driver that will generate a thumbs up wherever you go and will almost certainly be the only 99 at your local car show. Several people have stopped me to let me know they fondly recall a 99 as one of their first cars and I don't remember ever seeing another one on the road around here in Virginia in many years.

All emails will be answered promptly and I'll be happy to show the car to interested local buyers. I've also listed the car for sale locally and on enthusiast web sites so the ad could be pulled at any time if it is sold... and if I get lucky and find some new garage space before it sells, I will happily keep her in my collection.

Saab owner may speed up relaunch with gas-powered 9-3

Wed, 21 Nov 2012

National Electric Vehicle Sweden, the new owner of Saab, has good news for you if you happened to miss out on picking up a 9-3 before the company plummeted through bankruptcy. Automotive News Europe reports NEVS may offer a gasoline-powered 9-3 in 2013. That move would effectively step up the brand's re-launch plan by a full year. Originally, the company planned to introduce an electric vehicle in 2014, but NEVS is currently investigating ways to start production next summer using "a 9-3 with a traditional powertrain" in order to generate more cash for the electrification effort.
NEVS purchased Saab earlier this year with the intent of resurrecting the brand with a fully electric product portfolio. The new EVs would theoretically ride on the Saab Phoenix platform and be manufactured at the automaker's plant in Trollhattan, Sweden. The report of a resurrected gasoline model came courtesy of Mikael Oestlund, a company spokesperson familiar with the company's workings.

Saab has ruined all Swedish cars for me

Wed, Feb 10 2016

It's easy to dismiss my hatred of all Swedish automotive manufacturers as a simple result of bad experiences. I mean, we're all products of our own experiences, some we learn from, others we don't, and some we need to be hit over the head with time and time again. I've been hit over the head too many times with Saabs (and one lonely Volvo), and as a result, I can't bring myself to buy a Koenigsegg. It started with a 900 Turbo sedan. You know, the ugly duckling sister of the beautiful two-door coupe that spawned the Aero, which managed to look stunning from the front, and like a child with a full nappy (diaper) at the rear. I bought it at an auction (mistake number one) for $6,500 (AUD) because as a bloke in his early twenties, I wanted to be noticed – and a greasy-haired bespectacled musician driving a turbocharged Swedish luxury car was my way of standing out. On the drive home I noticed two things: one, it handled like it was on rails – it just gripped! And two, the turbo wasn't working. I took my new wheels to the mechanic, who promptly told me a custom exhaust system would solve the problem – mistake number two. During the fitting, Mr. Shonky's Repair Shop managed to fry some computer thingy. I won't try to remember or understand what it was, but he did tell me that it should have been replaced and that I would have to pay for it. I agreed. Mistake number three. Twelve months later I had spent more than double the original purchase price on repairs, and the turbo still wouldn't work. I sold it for about $4,000, and moved on to something more sensible. But the beautiful handling and quirky design had left an itch that I just couldn't scratch. Many cars and motorbikes later, I sold my Mazda RX-8 because it was too perfect. You know those cars that have spotless paint, an unmarked interior, low kilometers, and you're just too damn scared to park it anywhere? Yep, it was one of those. I would spend 30 to 40 minutes trying to find a vacant spot with vacant spots on either side, and even after leaving the car I would walk back to check if anyone had parked next to me. If they did, I moved. Not a low-anxiety vehicle. So I bought my second Saab – this time a 9-5 turbo wagon – from an auction. Wasn't that mistake number one? This one had reasonably low kilometers, and was even on LPG (a fairly common conversion is Australia – just not on Saabs) and only set me back $2,200. I drove it home, and low and behold, the turbo worked!

NEVS announces 200 layoffs as it says Saab restart will 'take time'

Fri, 26 Sep 2014

For a fleeting moment a few weeks ago, the news from Saab-owner National Electric Vehicle Sweden appeared almost positive. The company had its reorganization plan approved (a day after it was denied), and the automaker was actually showing a real, running vehicle, albeit one with a top speed of 75 miles per hour. But those tiny crumbs of potential goodness have been swept away because NEVS has announced layoffs of as many as 200 factory employees in September "due to lack of work."
Workers probably shouldn't get too eager to return to the factory either, because company's "decision to re-start production will be further delayed" by an unspecified amount of time, NEVS says in a press release. To begin assembling cars again, the company needs to find long-term funding and a new majority owner. Those seem like two very steep hurdles for the embattled automaker to clear.
Despite not producing cars since May, NEVS still claims it's negotiating with a new owner, possibly Mahindra, but according to Reuters, the Swedish company owes about 400 million kronor ($56 million) to creditors. According to its layoff announcement, getting rid of these workers is one step in the business' reorganization plan to be presented on October 8. Scroll down to read its full release.
