In a recent Autoblog sampling of 10 pre-owned choices at least 10 years old and selling for under $10K, an Autoblog editor gave a shout-out to Saab's 9-5. And who could blame him? Despite its departure from the US market and subsequent closure as an automaker, Saab's brand still resonates among a committed core of enthusiasts. The Saab 9-5, available in both sedan and wagon variants, was the upper model of a two-model lineup; the 9-3 sedan sat below it, while the GM-sourced 9-7 SUV didn't appear until 2005. Both the sedan and wagon 9-5 were surprisingly roomy, and the Aero variant, pictured here, incredibly fast. This for-sale example, located in North Carolina, is at 176,000 miles a well-used example in need of (at least) a repaint. But this is the perfect color combination, plus a combo of sport and utility. Saab restarts production line in Trollh"attan

The new owner of Saab, National Electric Vehicle Sweden, has bolted together its first two new cars at the company's traditional home in Trollhättan. The two 9-3 sedans were built to work bugs out of the production line and test newer components before full-scale production starts near the end of the year.
NEVS acting President, Mattias Bergman, issued a statement saying, "Prior to our decision to start production of Saab cars, we need to finalize a few remaining dialogues to build partnerships with suppliers. We now know that the plant is ready for production." First up for NEVS will be gas-powered, turbocharged 9-3s, before bringing a facelifted, electrified variant later next year. There are also plans to rejigger Saab's never-was Phoenix architecture for production, although NEVS needs to excise the remaining General Motors tech from the platform before building anything.
According to a report on Automotive News Europe, once under way, NEVS has set an optimistic target of 120,000 units per year by 2016, with sales focused in Europe and China - there's no official word on if NEVS ever plans to bring the Saab name back to North America.

Saab owner may speed up relaunch with gas-powered 9-3

National Electric Vehicle Sweden, the new owner of Saab, has good news for you if you happened to miss out on picking up a 9-3 before the company plummeted through bankruptcy. Automotive News Europe reports NEVS may offer a gasoline-powered 9-3 in 2013. That move would effectively step up the brand's re-launch plan by a full year. Originally, the company planned to introduce an electric vehicle in 2014, but NEVS is currently investigating ways to start production next summer using "a 9-3 with a traditional powertrain" in order to generate more cash for the electrification effort.
NEVS purchased Saab earlier this year with the intent of resurrecting the brand with a fully electric product portfolio. The new EVs would theoretically ride on the Saab Phoenix platform and be manufactured at the automaker's plant in Trollhattan, Sweden. The report of a resurrected gasoline model came courtesy of Mikael Oestlund, a company spokesperson familiar with the company's workings.
