Model Overview
The new 9-5 has an all-turbo powertrain lineup, bringing the power of larger engines without the fuel economy disadvantages of upsizing. The Turbo4 model is powered by a 220-horsepower, 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. 9-5 Turbo6 models come with a 300-hp, 2.8L turbo V6. The smaller engine is E85-capable, meaning that it can be fueled with a blend of up to 85 percent ethanol. Transmissions on either model include a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. Turbo6 models include Saab's XWD all-wheel drive system--a system that's geared both for sport-minded driving as well as inclement weather, using an electronic limited-slip rear differential and center differential system to send power quickly to the wheels with more traction. In normal driving, the system sends about 60 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels. Completely redesigned for 2011 with a sleek, clean shape on the outside and an interior that builds on Saab's past, the new 9-5 is about seven inches longer than the 9-5 it replaces, with most of that added length going to legroom in the cabin. The interior itself carries what Saab calls a "progressive Scandinavian design" and is appointed with materials that stand out in its class; gauges and controls are more clearly inspired by Saab's aircraft heritage. All models now get an engine start-stop button on the center console between the front seats and backseat passengers can get their own temperature control. At the top of the new 9-5 range is the performance-oriented 9-5 Aero, which adds more aggressive aerodynamics in front and in back, plus fog lamps, adaptive cornering lamps, rectangular exhaust tips and larger 19-inch alloy wheels with performance tires. The sporty Aero model doesn't ride as stiffly as you might expect, thanks to DriveSense, an adaptive chassis control system that includes three modes--comfort, sport and intelligent, which firms up the dampers only when needed. Standard equipment on the Aero is greatly expanded compared to the other models--to include variable-effort quick-ratio power steering, a panoramic moonroof, bi-xenon headlamps, perforated leather upholstery, sport seats, remote start and upgraded trim throughout. Also among the innovative tech features available on the 9-5 are an aircraft-style head-up display, bi-xenon adaptive lighting, automatic headlamp leveling and dynamic parking assistance--all part of the Technology Package. The 11-speaker premium surround sound system from harman/kardon, includes an 8-inch touch-screen with navigation system and 10 GB for music storage. A backseat DVD player is also available, including wireless headphones and viewing screens that fold out from the seatbacks. It's offered as part of the Rear Passenger Package that bundles the DVD system with tri-zone climate control, rear-seat audio controls and a separate rear forced-air vent.

Saab 900 SPG is the latest Petrolicious love story

Thu, 03 Oct 2013

The latest video from the crew at Petrolicious covers one funky Swede - a 1989 Saab 900 SPG. Produced from 1978 to 1998, the 900 enjoyed a long history, and thanks to its iconic look, it's quickly becoming a modern classic for the off-kilter car enthusiast. The SPG, short for Special Performance Group, makes this a particularly rare find, with owner Jordan Melville saying, "I didn't even realize what I had at the time."
Melville gives a rundown of his life with the 900 and his passion for Saab overall, even reflecting on that dark day that saw the Swedish brand closed its doors. As always, the videography is excellent and the story is intriguing in this latest video from Petrolicious. You can view the entire video down below.

Boeing, Saab take first flight in T-X trainer 36 months after starting development

Wed, Dec 21 2016

This post is appearing on Autoblog Military, Autoblog's sub-site dedicated to the vehicles, aircraft and ships of the world's armed forces. Bringing a new fighter from drawing board to its first flight is generally a lengthy endeavor, taking years of planning and tweaking and engineering. Or, at least it normally does. Boeing and Saab just took their new joint-developed training fighter, the T-X, out for its first spin just 36 months after starting development. According to Saab's deputy program manager for the T-X, Eddy De la Motte, that's half the time it usually takes to get a new jet in the sky. "We went from [critical design review] to first flight in 12 months. We don't do that very much at the Boeing Company," Boeing's program manager for the T-X, Ted Torgerson told Defense News. "I don't want to say it has not been done, but for a manned aircraft to go through a complete production-ready design, that is as fast and as efficient as we've ever been through it." Boeing/Saab's first test flight was a simple, 55-minute matter for Boeing test pilots Steven Schmidt and Dan Draeger. The pair took the plane up to 10,000 feet and hit speeds of 231 knots (265 miles per hour) while running handling checks on the twin-tail, single-engine jet. "I've been a part of this team since the beginning, and it was really exciting to be the first to train and fly," pilot Schmidt said. "The aircraft met all expectations. It's well designed and offers superior handling characteristics. The cockpit is intuitive, spacious and adjustable, so everything is within easy reach." "It was a smooth flight and a successful test mission," Draeger, who rode shotgun in the instructor's seat said in an official release. "I had a great all-around view throughout the flight from the instructor's seat, which is critical during training." Boeing/Saab's T-X is one of four jets competing for the role as the US military's next training aircraft. Northrop Grumman is fielding a clean-sheet design that allegedly flew earlier this year, while Lockheed Martin and Raytheon are modifying existing designs with partners – the South Korean KAI T-50 for Lockheed and the Leonardo M-346 for Raytheon. Grainy leaked images show stillborn Castriota-designed Saab 9-3

Mon, 04 Feb 2013

The Saab faithful are going to be playing the "what if" game for years to come. It's one of the burdens of being a fan of a dead brand. A fresh batch of grainy 9-3 Phoenix images have made their way online, alleged shots of a design proposal penned by none other than Jason Castriota. The five-door looks to feature an honest liftback, though SaabsUnited.com says this particular vehicle was drawn up as part of a business plan in early 2011. As such, Castriota apparently told the site the final product was to look much more athletic than what we see here. While the low-resolution images make it difficult to tell much about the design, we certainly appreciate the familiar roofline, full band taillamps and the contrasting rear spoiler reminiscent of the old Saab 99 and 900 ducktails.
Unfortunately, we know all too well why this creation never saw the light of day. Would-be savior Victor Muller couldn't quite pull Saab out of its nosedive, and the company fell into bankruptcy before the 9-3 Phoenix could get off the ground. There's talk of the Phoenix platform and Saab brand having new life in other markets as EVs and even as gas cars, but the model seen here will likely never see production - let alone North American showrooms.
