We are selling our 2001 Saab 9-5 SE Wagon as i will be inheriting my wife's Volvo.  I have used this car for a long work commute for the last year and it has performed perfectly.  We purchased it in October of 2012 with 120,000 miles on it.  Prior to my ownership it had two Colorado owners both of whom garaged the car. At 120,000 miles,  when we purchased it, I installed a new throttle body, new front brake rotors and pads, new swaybar end links links and new Michelin Primacy MXV4 tires. In addition, all of the other routine maintenance items were addressed such a flluids changed, etc. Every 5000 miles we change the oil with Mobil 1 synthetic oil.  At 140,000 miles it developed a whining sound which turned out to be the alternator. So we replaced the alternator as well as the serpentine belt. The timing belt and water pump were replaced by the previous owner at 105,000 miles so this car will be due to have the timing belt replaced in about 20,000 miles at 165,000 miles.

ITEMS OF NOTE

3.0L Turbo engine- in 80% interstate and 20% city driving I typically average 26-27 miles to the gallon. The most fun to drive up I-70 I have every driven.

Leather heated front and rear seats-  all seat heaters working properly

Traction control- works amazingly well.  My commute includes some mountain driving and I never felt like I needed all wheel drive.

Onstar system works properly with the antenna in tact. I am not a subscriber, but you could be it you chose to.

All pixels on the center display work properly as does the temperature, trip computer, average miles per gallon, etc.

Front and side air bags for the front seats.

The rear hatch does not support itself currently.  I have a replacement strut to swap in but have not spent the time to repair this item.

Half of the time on start up the system displays " Service Security System." Apparently, there is a rechargeable battery in the security system in case your main battery is disconnected or dead.  After years of use this will get low on charge and need to be replaced.  I priced this part and decided I could live with hitting CLEAR on the display occasionally as it does not effect the security system or the reliability of the car.

There is a slight coolant leak somewhere in the left front part of the engine bay. It does not drip and there is not a coolant odor however,  I have to top off the coolant about once per oil change.  It has been such a minor issue that I have not taken more time to address it.

The sunroof works properly, however, there is a clip on the wind screen the occasionally will pop up and get caught when closing.  I have not repaired this as I usually use it in flip up vent mode and it works just fine.

There are some wear spots on the driver's seat leather and some slight cracking on the front passenger seat leather.

This wagon has always been a Colorado car and has the rock chips in the hood to prove it. However,  as with all Colorado cars there is not any rust.

When I purchased the wagon, the front bumper valance had been split and the fog lights were both broken.  I have not taken the time to repair the valence other  than to use Gorilla Tape to hold the pieces together.  I replaced the existing fog lights with fillers from genuine SAAB parts and added a pair of  Hella 500FF for my mountain commuting.  These are wired into the factory switch and work very well.  I also think they give this SAAB a unique look.

The body is very straight given the age and mileage.  The only significant scratch is on the rear bumper on the passenger side that was there when we bought it.  When we purchased the wagon, I took it to my local paintless dent removal shop to have the few dings taken out.  You will be amazed at how straight this body is. The paint shines nicely- a result of many years of being kept in the garage.

The original spare tire has never been used. The original luggage net is in the rear compartment still in the original bag.

I have both keys with the built in key fob and the owner's manual.

Clear Colorado title in hand.

I welcome anyone who would like to come take a look and drive the car prior to bidding.

Junkyard Gem: 1971 Saab 96

Sat, Jan 9 2021

Americans could buy the very first mass-produced Saab car, the 92, all the way back in 1950. Few did, because a tiny and odd-looking Swedish car with a smoky two-stroke engine buzzing out 25 horsepower didn't seem suitable for highway use, especially when a new Plymouth business coupe sold for $1,371 (about $15,180 today). Then came the 93, notable to Americans mostly for being sold by novelist Kurt Vonnegut's Saab dealership in Massachusetts. The first Saab to win over respectable numbers of American car shoppers was the 96, introduced here for the 1961 model year. North American 96 sales continued through 1973, and I've managed to find one of the later 96s in a junkyard located near Pikes Peak in Colorado. North American sales of the much less oddball 99 began in the 1969 model year, and that car evolved directly into the original 900 that sold very well through the early 1990s. Still, some Americans living in icy regions stayed loyal to the 96, so Saab kept selling 96s here until federal emissions and safety regulations made such sales unprofitable. Meanwhile, Scandinavians could buy new 96s all the way through 1980. My grandfather, a self-taught engineer who set foot outside the city limits of St. Paul, Minn., only to race Corvettes at Elkhart Lake (in summer) and all manner of rust-prone imports on frozen lakes (in winter), had this Saab 96 when I was a kid. The somewhat uneven bodywork near street level is the result of house-paint-over-Bondo corrosion repairs, and I recall going on some terrifying high-speed rides around town with Grandpa, circa 1975, watching the pavement flash by through the holes in the floor as we headed to the VFW for the meat raffle. Hey, the St. Paul VFW had Grain Belt on tap for cheap, a consolation for those who failed to win any meat. After that, a man could take his Saab to an establishment selling authentic St. Paul booya. As I recall, this Saab finally broke in half at an ice race in the late 1970s and got replaced by a slightly less rusty Rabbit. The serious Saab 96 nuts— including my grandfather— preferred the two-stroke three-cylinder engine, due to its chainsaw racket and allegedly superior performance on ice. By 1969, however, a Ford-produced V4 became the only powerplant available in a new 96 on our shores (the V4 had been an option for a couple of years prior to that). Someone grabbed the 65-horsepower V4 before I reached this car.

New owners of Saab don't get to use the name

Tue, Feb 2 2016

Saab won't be revived as a Chinese-backed electric car brand. Aerospace and defense company Saab AB has declined to let the new owners of the dormant automaker's old designs and factory use the name on new cars, Automotive News reports. It's a blow to fans of the Swedish brand, who hoped the name would be revived on new vehicles coming out of the same factory as models like the 99 Turbo. National Electric Vehicle Sweden, known as NEVS, bought major assets of the Saab operation in 2012 following former parent Spyker's decision to liquidate the company in December 2011. This not only included the Trollhattan assembly plant in Sweden, but the rights to the Saab 9-3 and the platform of its successor. NEVS built some new 9-3s using leftover parts and powered by the old 2.0-liter turbo engines, with the intent to raise money to produce new electric vehicles for Europe and China – and to use the Saab name. When General Motors bought all of Saab Automobile in 2000, it used the name under license from the Saab AB. That permission was then passed to Spyker in 2010 and later NEVS, albeit without the griffin logo. But when NEVS sought creditor protection in 2014, Saab AB revoked the naming rights. Following reorganization, NEVS in August announced a deal with Dongfeng Motor Corp. to develop a new lineup of electric vehicles, which was revealed in December to include five new models by 2018, some assembled in China by 2020 – the first of which being an EV version of the old 9-3. However, Saab AB told Automotive News that discussions have ended regarding the use of the Saab name on these vehicles. NEVS owner Kai Johan Jiang told a Swedish radio station the company will find a new name to market the cars under when they go on sale. It's similar to what happened to SAIC when it purchased vehicle technology from bankrupt British carmaker MG Rover. While it had the tooling to essentially make the Rover 75, the brand name at the time belonged to BMW and barred SAIC from using it, so the Roewe brand was created in China. It's unclear why talks broke down and also where NEVS will get a new name (there aren't nicer ways to spell Saab, and it was originally an acronym, anyway). Will Saab AB attach its name to another line of cars? Probably not. What it does mean, however, is that Saab fans have to cling tighter to their old cars now. Perhaps that's for the best. Super sleeper Saab 900 does 174 mph in the standing mile

Sun, 14 Apr 2013

Somewhere behind Hennessey setting a new top speed record at this year's Texas Mile with its camouflage Ford GT, a stock-looking 1996 Saab 900T pulled up to the line to see what it could do. The dealer showroom wheels wouldn't offer any indication that the 2.0-liter four-cylinder under the hood was getting help from a Garrett turbocharger, a tuned ECU and E85 gas to put out 465 horsepower at the front wheels.
Knowing that, it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that at the other end of the mile the sky blue Swedish wonder was doing 174 miles per hour. The four-cylinder class at the Texas Mile has plenty such rockets, too, this Swede coming just behind a Dodge Neon that did 175.8 mph. You can watch the Saab do its thing in the video below.
