1999 Saab 9-5 Wagon, near perfect body with just a very few small scuffs and tiny rock chips, no dings, dents or paint flaws, see pics. Black leather interior in great shape, heated front and rear seats with power controls and 3-way memory settings; small cracks and a single hole in front of drivers seat and cracked leather on center console, otherwise in perfect condition. 2.3L turbo engine with 4 speed automatic transmission is super reliable, has never let us down, powerful and economical. Stock Garrett turbo upgraded with brand new Mitsubishi GT unit from Saab 9-5 250 HP Aero model, nice increase in highway passing power and economy over stock - regularly returns 28+ MPG at 75+ hwy speeds, capable of over 32 MPG at steady 65 MPH. All engine and transmission mounts were replaced as a maintenance item less than 1000 miles ago, greatly smoothing out vibration at idle most 9-5s are known for. No leaks or drips. Silicone intercooler hoses and vacuum lines installed with new turbo. Mobil One synthetic oil and fluids throughout.
Rear seat is a 60/40 split and folds to form a long load floor - lots of room back there for camping, groceries or whatever you might need to carry. Continental Extreme DWS (Dry, Wet, Snow) all-weather Ultra-high-performance (UHP) 16" radial tires on stock Saab rims, no curb rash or oxidation. Brakes, suspension, steering all tight and work as they should. Both Sport and Winter shift modes work well. SID rebuilt a few years back, no missing pixels and all functions work. Radio & CD player sound good, has stock subwoofer built into cargo area and you can crank it! Cold AC and working heat front and rear. Cruise control, tilt wheel, front, rear and headlight wipers with new blades. Sunroof works perfectly in both modes and seals well, no water or air leaks. All glass and mirrors intact, headlights and other lenses are bright and shiny with no oxidation, power mirrors occasionally intermittent and fog light cover on one side is cracked. Has been a California/Arizona vehicle for many years so there is absolutely NO rust anywhere, body and chassis are solid and clean as can be. There is a trailer hitch and 4-pin wiring harness from a previous owner but we've never used it. Couple of small items for complete disclosure - 1: SID will occasionally display false errors such as front or rear light failure and check coolant level when there are no faults. As these go away with the push of a button never gave it much thought after confirming time and time again that there are no actual problems. 2: AC is cold (44 degrees) but left side driver's dash vent blows warm air only - a known Saab issue involving the driver side flapper door motor. All other vents work fine and the faulty vent can be completely shut off so again this does not present a problem in use. 3: Cruise control will always set fine the first time you use it but sometimes will not reset after hitting the brakes - sometimes this resolves itself right away, sometimes it takes a few miles but always eventually starts working again. At this time, these are the only issues I am aware of. This is a fine example of a clean, well maintained Saab 9-5 turbo wagon which needs nothing to enjoy driving day in and day out. This has been our long-distance travel wagon and has been smooth, comfortable and reliable on any number of 1000+ mile trips - we are only selling as we needed a manual shift wagon to flat-tow behind our motorhome, so it's been replaced by a Passat turbo wagon, which is almost, but not quite, as nice to drive as the Saab! We'll miss it! NO Reserve! Saab is sold as-is, where-is with no warranty expressed or implied. Buyer responsible for all shipping and/or travel costs, seller will cooperate with all reasonable arrangements for shipping or pickup in person. We welcome and encourage inspections during the auction period, located in Ash Fork AZ, 50 miles from Flagstaff or Prescott. Fly in to Flagstaff, Prescott, Phoenix or Las Vegas airports and drive home. Clear AZ title, no issues. Check our 100% feedback, we strive to always show items in their true condition. Thanks much for looking and have a great time bidding! |

Grainy leaked images show stillborn Castriota-designed Saab 9-3
Mon, 04 Feb 2013The Saab faithful are going to be playing the "what if" game for years to come. It's one of the burdens of being a fan of a dead brand. A fresh batch of grainy 9-3 Phoenix images have made their way online, alleged shots of a design proposal penned by none other than Jason Castriota. The five-door looks to feature an honest liftback, though SaabsUnited.com says this particular vehicle was drawn up as part of a business plan in early 2011. As such, Castriota apparently told the site the final product was to look much more athletic than what we see here. While the low-resolution images make it difficult to tell much about the design, we certainly appreciate the familiar roofline, full band taillamps and the contrasting rear spoiler reminiscent of the old Saab 99 and 900 ducktails.
Unfortunately, we know all too well why this creation never saw the light of day. Would-be savior Victor Muller couldn't quite pull Saab out of its nosedive, and the company fell into bankruptcy before the 9-3 Phoenix could get off the ground. There's talk of the Phoenix platform and Saab brand having new life in other markets as EVs and even as gas cars, but the model seen here will likely never see production - let alone North American showrooms.

Boeing, Saab take first flight in T-X trainer 36 months after starting development
Wed, Dec 21 2016This post is appearing on Autoblog Military, Autoblog's sub-site dedicated to the vehicles, aircraft and ships of the world's armed forces. Bringing a new fighter from drawing board to its first flight is generally a lengthy endeavor, taking years of planning and tweaking and engineering. Or, at least it normally does. Boeing and Saab just took their new joint-developed training fighter, the T-X, out for its first spin just 36 months after starting development. According to Saab's deputy program manager for the T-X, Eddy De la Motte, that's half the time it usually takes to get a new jet in the sky. "We went from [critical design review] to first flight in 12 months. We don't do that very much at the Boeing Company," Boeing's program manager for the T-X, Ted Torgerson told Defense News. "I don't want to say it has not been done, but for a manned aircraft to go through a complete production-ready design, that is as fast and as efficient as we've ever been through it." Boeing/Saab's first test flight was a simple, 55-minute matter for Boeing test pilots Steven Schmidt and Dan Draeger. The pair took the plane up to 10,000 feet and hit speeds of 231 knots (265 miles per hour) while running handling checks on the twin-tail, single-engine jet. "I've been a part of this team since the beginning, and it was really exciting to be the first to train and fly," pilot Schmidt said. "The aircraft met all expectations. It's well designed and offers superior handling characteristics. The cockpit is intuitive, spacious and adjustable, so everything is within easy reach." "It was a smooth flight and a successful test mission," Draeger, who rode shotgun in the instructor's seat said in an official release. "I had a great all-around view throughout the flight from the instructor's seat, which is critical during training." Boeing/Saab's T-X is one of four jets competing for the role as the US military's next training aircraft. Northrop Grumman is fielding a clean-sheet design that allegedly flew earlier this year, while Lockheed Martin and Raytheon are modifying existing designs with partners – the South Korean KAI T-50 for Lockheed and the Leonardo M-346 for Raytheon. Junkyard Gem: 1989 Saab 9000 Turbo
Tue, Jul 24 2018Saab got a lot of sales out of its 99 and 99-based 900 models, but a bigger and more modern car became necessary in order to compete with other European manufacturers in the executive-car market. This car was the 9000, and examples are getting very hard to find nowadays. Here's a 200,000-mile turbocharged 1989 Saab 9000 in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service wrecking yard. Other than Mercedes-Benzes and Volvo 240s, I don't see many junkyard 1980s European cars with better than 200,000 miles on the clock. The owner or owners of this Saab loved it enough to keep it in nice shape for a good 30 years, and it drove more than 7,000 miles on average during each year of its life. The engine is the same 160-horsepower turbocharged Saab H that went into the 1989 Saab 900 Turbo. This engine is descended from the Triumph Slant-4, which Americans knew best as the power under the hood of the Triumph TR-7. Members of this engine family remained in production from 1968 through 2009. It has the five-speed manual transmission, which was starting to become an unusual transmission choice for U.S. car buyers by 1989 — even in Saabs. The Scania badging on Saabs went away after 1995. I see plenty of Saab 900s during my junkyard wanderings, but 9000s aren't so easy to find in the big U-Wrench yards in 2018. I'm not sure what's going on with the fabric in this car's door-panel inserts. Saab went with the same ignition-switch location as everybody else with the 9000, rather than the "traditional" spot between the front seats. Naturally, Saab purists were so outraged by this that they ordered another round of surstromming and swore to stick with their two-stroke 96s for the next 30 years.
